Caffeine consumption and onset of alcohol use among early adolescents.

Preventing or delaying the onset of alcohol use among children and youth is an important public health goal. One possible factor in alcohol use onset among early adolescents is caffeine. The aim of this study was to assess the possible contribution of caffeine to the onset of alcohol use during early adolescence. We used data from the Young Mountaineer Health Study Cohort. Survey data were collected from 1349 (response rate: 80.7%) 6th grade students (mean age at baseline 11.5 years) in 20 middle schools in West Virginia during the fall of 2020, and again approximately 6 months later in spring

A laboratory-based test of the relation between adolescent alcohol use and panic-relevant responding.

A burgeoning literature supports a link between alcohol use and panic-spectrum problems (e.g., panic attacks, disorder) among adolescents, but the direction of influence has yet to be properly examined. From a theoretical perspective, panic-spectrum problems may increase risk for problematic drinking via affect regulation efforts (e.g., self-medication), and problematic consumption also may increase or initiate panic-relevant responding (e.g., learning or kindling models). The objective of the current investigation was to examine the role of prior alcohol use in predicting panic-relevant respo…

Polydipsia's contribution to temporal discrimination of rats on a fixed interval schedule.

This experiment concerned the contribution of polydipsia on the temporal discrimination of rats during a fixed-interval 60-sec. schedule. In this study, the timing accuracy of 12 rats which had access to water during training was compared to that of 12 rats which had no water during training. The rats were trained for 25 sessions on an FI 60-sec. schedule. In early sessions before polydipsia was fully developed, no differences existed between the timing accuracy of the water group and no-water group. As the amount of water drunk by the water group increased as the number of sessions increased,

Medicine for a long life?: hygiene and distilled liquors in early seventeenth-century England.

This study examines opinions on distilled liquors in hygiene books in early seventeenth-century England. As these liquors gradually became popular in the late sixteenth century, health advice began to incorporate discussions on them. Focusing on William Vaughan, Tobias Venner, James Hart, and Francis Bacon, this study investigated how their opinions reflect their medical ideas and interests, as well as the changing drinking habits in contemporary England. Although Vaughan initially praised the life-extending effects of distilled liquor, his later treatises became much more sceptical. He critic…

Relationship between Alcohol Consumption and Testosterone Deficiency according to Facial Flushes among Middle-Aged and Older Korean Men.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between alcohol consumption and total testosterone deficiency based on facial flushing among Korean men. METHODS: A total of 314 men were included in this study and divided into non-drinkers (n=78) and drinkers (n=236). Drinkers were also divided into flushers (n=96) and non-flushers (n=140). Flushers and non-flushers were separated into two groups based on the amount of alcohol consumed: moderate drinkers (≤8 standard drinks per week) and heavy drinkers (>8 standard drinks per week). Total testosterone <3.5 ng/mL was defined as testosterone de

Low-threshold extended-release naltrexone for high utilizers of public services with severe alcohol use disorder: A pilot study.

Extended-release naltrexone (XRNTX) is an effective treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). We sought to evaluate the feasibility, accepta … costs in the pre-enrollment period. We also observed non-significant improvements in the number of drinking days, but no change in quality of life as measured by the EQ-5D. Eighty-eight percent of participants perceived XRNTX as helping with their drinking. Findings need to be replicated in a larger study, however if replicated, the cost savings could be …

A novel objective sour taste evaluation method based on near-infrared spectroscopy.

One of the most important themes in the development of foods and drinks is the accurate evaluation of taste properties. In general, a sensory evaluation system is frequently used for evaluating food and drink. This method, which is dependent on human senses, is highly sensitive but is influenced by the eating experience and food palatability of individuals, leading to subjective results. Therefore, a more effective method for objectively estimating taste properties is required. Here we show that salivary hemodynamic signals, as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy, are a useful objective ind

Naltrexone dampens ethanol-induced cardiovascular and hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal axis activation.

Alcohol ingestion activates the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This study examined naltrexone effects on alcohol-induced increases in physiological responses and their association with alcohol liking. Using a within-subjects design, heavy drinking men (N = 19) were maintained on each of three naltrexone doses (0, 50, and 100 mg, p.o.) over an 8-day inpatient stay. Within each naltrexone dose, subjects had three alcohol challenge sessions (none, moderate, high) in random order. Autonomic, subjective and endocrine measurements were collected regularly prior…

Prevention of alcohol use and abuse.

The primary goal of educational alcohol prevention programs is to lower the overall prevalence of alcohol use and abuse among populations at … ression of consumption to more severe levels. Reducing high-risk consumption may include preventing drinking while driving as well as promoting "responsible" drinking. Prevention programs may include a focus on reducing or eliminating consumption among occasional users. Prevention is also targeted at adults, primarily focusing on reduction of alcohol-impai …

Unemployment and highway fatalities.

We considered unemployment, an often overlooked covariate of highway fatalities, hypothesizing that (1) as unemployment rises, aggregate driving decreases, especially among the unemployed, and as driving decreases, fatalities should decrease; (2) unemployment may influence drinking--some among the unemployed may drink less due to lower incomes, while others may drink more due to stress so the net effect would be ambiguous; and (3) unemployment may increase aggregate levels of stress and unhappiness, which can result in poor concentration on driving and thus, in turn, should result in more acci…

Buffering effect of antacids in the mouth--a new treatment of dental erosion?

Antacids are drugs of choice in the treatment of reflux esophagitis and peptic ulcer disease, where acid regurgitation may cause dental erosion. Since there are no specific preventive measures or effective treatment for erosions, the present study was made to assess whether the keeping of antacids in the mouth before swallowing would be beneficial with regard to their effect on mouth pH, after acidic challenge. Five healthy subjects formed the test panel. After measuring the acid binding capacity of all the antacid preparations in the Finnish market, the two most effective were selected for te

Effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on alcohol consumption: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major global health burden with high relapse rates and limited treatment uptake. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), developed for type 2 diabetes and obesity, may also reduce alcohol consumption by modulating central reward pathways. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO CRD420251009075). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies were included if they assessed the effect of GLP-1 RAs on alcohol-related outcomes in adults with hazardous drinking or AUD…

Alcohol consumption and cancer incidence in women: interaction with smoking, body mass index and menopausal hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption has been associated with increased risks of certain site-specific cancers and decreased risks of some other cancers. There is, however, little reliable evidence as to whether the alcohol-associated risks for specific cancers are modified by smoking, body mass index (BMI) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) use. METHODS: In the prospective UK Million Women Study, 1,233,177 postmenopausal women without prior cancer, mean age 56 (SD 5) years, reported their alcohol consumption in median year 1998 (IQR 1998-1999), and were followed by record-linkage for incident c

Effects of front-of-package labels for added sugars and non-sugar sweeteners on parents' selections for their children: a randomized experiment.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate effects of front-of-package labels (FOPLs) for added sugars and non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) on U.S. parents' product selections and perceptions. METHODS: Parents of children age 2-12 years (n= 2,896) completed an online survey in November 2024 and were randomized to: no-FOPL control (n = 990), added sugar FOPL (n = 949), or FOPLs for both added sugars and NSS (n = 957). Participants were shown four fruit drinks and four yogurts. For each set, one product did not contain added sugars or NSS, one was sweetened with added sugars, one with NSS, and one ha

Decoding individual dairy cow behavioral profiles through electronic feeder and drinker data.

Individual animals can differ considerably in how they feed, drink, and compete for resources, yet much data analysis still relies on group-level comparisons that obscure these individual differences. Electronic feeding and drinking systems make it possible to characterize individual behavioral profiles within groups. Using 107 lactating Holstein dairy cows tracked over 207 d, we extracted 16 behavioral variables from electronic feed bin and water bin data, capturing conventional metrics (feeding and drinking intake, duration and meal frequency) alongside measures of non-nutritive visits, soci…

The Protocol for: Do peers enhance behavior change in group motivational interviewing? A translational clinical trial investigating brain synchrony in underage emerging adults during an fMRI hyperscanning task and association with alcohol use reductions.

UNLABELLED: US emerging adults under legal drinking age (underage emerging adults; U-EA; ages 18-19) are unlikely to seek or receive indicated health risk behavior interventions, thus it is imperative to find brief, effective interventions to reduce U-EA health risk behaviors, such as drinking. Developmental neuroscience reflects that peers hold higher neural salience during adolescence, as evidenced by differential neural response with real and/or simulated peers, even when those peers are not friends, and particularly in the context of alcohol. Peers also activate positive (prosocial) neural…

Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial of Naltrexone Among Women Living With HIV: Correlations Between Reductions in Self-Reported Alcohol Use and Changes in Phosphatidylethanol.

BACKGROUND: Direct biomarkers such as phosphatidylethanol (PEth) have the capability to detect heavy alcohol use, but it is unclear how strongly self-reported reduction in alcohol use correlates with reduction in PEth. We sought to explore the strength of correlation between reductions in self-reported alcohol use and change in PEth among a sample of women living with HIV (WLWH) who participated in a clinical trial to reduce heavy alcohol use. We also sought to determine whether this correlation was stronger in women with lower body mass index (BMI) and women without an alcohol use disorder (A
