We analyzed the long-term functional outcome in patients with major upper extremity replantations. Two patients had amputations proximal to the elbow joint, two had elbow disarticulations and five patients had amputations at the forearm. The mean age was 24 and the mean follow-up time was 18 years. Six patients have undergone secondary operations. The mean grip strength was restored to 34% of the contralateral extremity. One hundred and eighty-two patients presented with 200 inline-skating injuries over a 30-month period. Of these, 14% were admitted to hospital, 10% required operative treatment. Seventy-one consecutive patients were treated with a modified Steindler flexorplasty from 1970 to 1987. The mechanisms of injury and etiologies included 45 motor vehicle accidents, 13 birth injuries, and 13 cases of poliomyelitis. From 1972 to 1983 105 patients were admitted with a dislocated supracondylar fracture of the humerus. The average follow-up was five years. In general the functional results of treatment were good.
