[Changes in somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with vertebrogenic pain syndromes treated by electroacupuncture].

Application of electroacupuncture (EAP) of the segmental points to patients with vertebrogenic algesic syndromes decreased amplitude of N150 and P240 waves recorded from vertex to painful electrocutaneous stimulation in the region innervated by an affected root. As distinct from EAP of segmental point auricular EAP not only decreased the amplitude of late components of evoked potentials (EP), but also increased it, direction of EP changes depending on the character of sensitivity disorders. It is suggested that effect of EAP-evoked EP changes in patients with hypalgesia is determined by two op

The activation and distribution of GABA and L-glutamate receptors on goldfish Mauthner neurones: an analysis of dendritic remote inhibition.

1. The sensitivity of the membrane of the cell-body and lateral dendrite of the Mauthner neurone to iontophoretically applied GABA and L-glutamic acid has been investigated in goldfish. The cells were afterwards examined histologically. The results, taken together with physiological observations, help to explain some functional properties of dendritic synapses.2. GABA inhibits by increasing the membrane conductance, and has little effect on resting potential. L-Glutamate depolarizes, and its effects could sum with subthreshold excitatory post-synaptic potentials (e.p.s.p.s) to cause impulse fi

An EABR paradigm for assessing inner ear malformations in cochlear implantation.

BACKGROUND: Children with prelingual profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and inner ear malformations (IEM), including cochleovestibular nerve anomalies, present complex and challenging cases during cochlear implantation. Intraoperative objective assessments, such as the electric auditory brainstem response (eABR), provide crucial information on auditory pathway integrity during surgery. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a novel intraoperative eABR paradigm in children with IEM and compare the findings with those from children with normal inner ear anatomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nineteen co

Effects of tDCS of the DLPFC on brain networks: A hybrid brain modeling study.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown promise in treating neurological disorders, particularly through dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) targeting. However, the effects of DLPFC-tDCS on brain functional networks and the underlying propagation mechanisms remain poorly understood. We present a novel tDCS hybrid brain model (tDCS-HBM) that incorporates tDCS-induced gray matter electric fields into a large-scale brain network model, considering their relationship with membrane potential to effectively predict spatiotemporal dynamics. Using this model, we simulated brain act

Cochlear implantation and partial deafness - A retrospective review on processor programming.

BACKGROUND: To decide what programming parameters to use for cochlear implants (CIs) in partial deaf patients can be challenging. OBJECTIVE: The processor programming form, categorised as electrical complement (EC), electro-acoustic-stimulation (EAS) or electric stimulation (ES), and difficulties switching programming form were investigated. METHODS: A retrospective investigation of medical records and audiograms was conducted in adult patients intended for EC and EAS. RESULTS: Eighty-four ears (80 patients) were included. Twenty ears were initially fitted with EC, 32 with EAS, 30 with ES a…

Group and individual level variations between symmetric and asymmetric DLPFC montages for tDCS over large scale brain network nodes.

Two challenges to optimizing transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are selecting between, often similar, electrode montages and accounting for inter-individual differences in response. These two factors are related by how tDCS montage determines current flow through the brain considered across or within individuals. MRI-based computational head models (CHMs) predict how brain anatomy determines electric field (EF) patterns for a given tDCS montage. Because conventional tDCS produces diffuse brain current flow, stimulation outcomes may be understood as modulation of global networks. Th

Precision non-implantable neuromodulation therapies: a perspective for the depressed brain.

Current first-line treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD) include pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. However, one-third of depressed patients do not achieve remission after multiple medication trials, and psychotherapy can be costly and time-consuming. Although non-implantable neuromodulation (NIN) techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, and magnetic seizure therapy are gaining momentum for treating MDD, the efficacy of non-convulsive techniques is still modest, whereas use of convulsive mo

Electrophysiologic auditory tests.

Auditory stimulation elicits a complex series of electric signals in the ear and nervous system which can be used for hearing assessment, audiologic and neurologic diagnosis, intraoperative monitoring, and neurophysiologic research. The earliest components comprise the electrocochleogram. The cochlear microphonic arises from receptor potentials from cochlear hair cells, and is used to assess hair cell function in patients with auditory neuropathy. The summating potential becomes larger in Ménière's disease. The eighth-nerve compound action potential is useful for objective audiometry. Brainste

Gender determines cortisol and alpha-amylase responses to acute physical and psychosocial stress in patients with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by affective instability, unstable relationships, and identity disturbance. We measured salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) and salivary cortisol levels in all participants during exposure to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and an electric stimulation stress. Seventy-two BPD patients were compared with 377 age- and gender- matched controls. The State and Trait versions of the Spielberger Anxiety Inventory test (STAI-S and STAI-T, respectively), the Profile of Mood State (POMS) tests, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Depression and…

Treatment of central sensitization in patients with 'unexplained' chronic pain: what options do we have?

INTRODUCTION: Central sensitization accounts for chronic 'unexplained' pain in a wide variety of disorders, including chronic whiplash-associated disorders, temporomandibular disorders, chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic tension-type headache among others. Given the increasing evidence supporting the clinical significance of central sensitization in those with unexplained chronic pain, the awareness is growing that central sensitization should be a treatment target in these patients. AREAS COVERED: This article provides an overview of the

The effects of potassium channel opener P1075 on the human saphenous vein and human internal mammary artery.

Because adrenergic contractions can contribute to the development of life-threatening spasm of coronary artery bypass graft, this study was performed to investigate the effect of adenosine 3-phosphate (ATP)-sensitive K channel (KATP) opener P1075 on contractions of isolated human saphenous vein (HSV) and human internal mammary artery (HIMA). Phasic contractions were evoked by electric field stimulation (20 Hz) and noradrenaline. The sustained contractions were evoked by phenylephrine. The presence of pore-forming Kir6.1 and Kir6.2 subunits of the KATP channels in the HIMA and only Kir6.2 in th

Radio electric treatment vs. Es-Citalopram in the treatment of panic disorders associated with major depression: an open-label, naturalistic study.

Simultaneous coexistence of anxiety with depressive disorders is probably one of the major current problems in Medicine. The pharmacological approach for Panic Disorder and Major Depression includes "high-powered" benzodiazepines for the rapid, but transitory relief of same symptoms and especially antidepressant compounds. Recently physical-instrumental approaches have been tested for the treatment of these complex diseases, like Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES), Trans-cranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and Radio Electric Asymmetric Treatment (REAC). The REAC apparatus was designed to

Optimization of atrio-ventricular delay in patients with dual-chamber pacemaker.

Development and advances in heart pacing over the last nearly half a century allowed to save numerous lives by providing pacing support in bradycardia and complete heart block. Nevertheless, long-term follow up of patients with implanted pacemaker showed unfavorable remodeling of the heart, both from hemodynamic as well as electrical standpoint. The optimal programmed pacemaker setting, apart from the optimal place for ventricular stimulation, is essential to obtain the best hemodynamic and the clinical after-effects of the stimulation of the heart and to minimize potential unfavorable effects

Evaluation of focused multipolar stimulation for cochlear implants: a preclinical safety study.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implants (CIs) have a limited number of independent stimulation channels due to the highly conductive nature of the fluid-filled cochlea. Attempts to develop highly focused stimulation to improve speech perception in CI users includes the use of simultaneous stimulation via multiple current sources. Focused multipolar (FMP) stimulation is an example of this approach and has been shown to reduce interaction between stimulating channels. However, compared with conventional biphasic current pulses generated from a single current source, FMP is a complex stimulus that includes

MAFF is a transcription factor that regulates contraction-induced skeletal muscle transcription.

Skeletal muscle adapts to exercise through rapid transcriptional remodeling, but regulators that link contractile activity to these gene programs remain unclear. Here we show that MAFF, a small MAF transcription factor, is consistently induced by acute exercise in both human and mouse skeletal muscle, with induction restricted to muscles recruited by the exercise modality. In C2C12 cells, Maff was induced by in vitro electrical pulse stimulation model. Using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Maff knockout C2C12 cells, we found that loss of Maff reduced myogenic fusion with accumulation of unfused nuclei. R

Neuroimmune Microenvironment Reprogramming via Immuno-piezoelectric Transducers for Synergistic Stem Cell Therapy in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Secondary traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a pro-inflammatory microenvironment that hampers neural stem cells (NSCs) therapy and tissue regeneration. To address this challenge, an immuno-piezoelectric transducer have been developed to create an anti-inflammatory immune microenvironment, deliver wireless electrical stimulation, and facilitate multimodal NSCs therapy. The immuno-piezoelectric transducer drives the polarization of microglia towards the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype and secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines. This modulation significantly reduces the inflammatory response,

Effects of electrode angle-orientation on the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation on motor cortex excitability.

BACKGROUND: For effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), electrical field distribution and coverage of the target areas play a decisive role. METHODS: We explored the effect of different angle-orientations of tDCS electrodes applied over the upper limb motor cortex (M1) on motor cortex excitability in healthy volunteers. Sixteen individuals received 1 mA anodal or cathodal tDCS through 35 cm2 electrodes over M1 for 15 min. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to examine tDCS-generated cortical excitability effects. The M1 electrode-orientation was following the right-l
