A holistic model to assess risk factors of fasciolosis in Ankole cattle.

In recent decades, remote sensing (RS) technology and geographical information systems (GIS) were increasingly used as tools for epidemiological studies and the control of zoonotic diseases. Fasciolosis, a zoonotic disease caused by a trematode parasite (Fasciola spp.), is a good candidate for the application of RS and GIS in epidemiology because it is strongly influenced by the environment, i.e. the habitat of the intermediate host. In this study, we examined variables which may increase the fasciolosis risk of Ankole cattle in the degraded and overgrazed Mutara rangelands of north-eastern Rw

BCG epidemiology supports its protection against COVID-19? A word of caution.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by type 2 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), puts all of us to the test. Epidemiologic observations could critically aid the development of protective measures to combat this devastating viral outbreak. Recent observations, linked nation based universal Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination to potential protection against morbidity and mortality from SARS-CoV-2, and received much attention in public media. We wished to validate the findings by examining the country based association between COVID-19 mortality per million population, o

Epidemiology of hepatitis E virus infection in animals in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the major causes of acute hepatitis in humans worldwide with a case-fatality rate of 1-4% in the general population that might reach 30% in pregnant women. In the past decade in Africa, studies have shown that HEV infects not only humans but also animals. A systematic review summarizing the epidemiological data of HEV has been only performed in humans residing in Africa. We will perform this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of HEV infection in animal species in Africa. METHODS: This review will include cross-sectional s

The epidemiology of drug-resistant epilepsy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The definition of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) affects case identification and treatment, and impacts prevalence or incidence estimates and health burden estimation in epidemiology. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the consistency between definitions of DRE in the literature and the official definition in the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) guidelines, and to estimate the incidence, prevalence, and risk factors for DRE. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for observational studies of DRE published between January 1980 and July 2015. The def

Ecology and diversity in upper respiratory tract microbial population structures from a cross-sectional community swabbing study.

PURPOSE: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are responsible for over 2.8 million deaths per year worldwide with pathobiont carriage a required precursor to infection. We sought to determine carriage epidemiology for both bacterial and viral respiratory pathogens as part of a large population-based cross-sectional carriage study. METHODOLOGY: Nose self-swab samples were collected in two separate time-points, May to August 2012 (late spring/summer) and February to April 2013 (winter/early spring). The presence of six bacterial species: S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. aureus, P

Epidemiology of Budd-Chiari syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The global epidemiological data of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) are scant. A systemic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the incidence and prevalence of BCS. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the study quality. The pooled incidence and prevalence of BCS with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using a random-effect model. The heterogeneity was assessed by the Cochran's Q-test and I2 statistics. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the study region (Asia or Europe).

Modeling the impact of combined vaccination programs against varicella and herpes zoster in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Adoption of varicella immunization in Europe is limited due to a predicted increase in the incidence of herpes zoster (HZ) resulting from a removal of exogenous boosting by varicella vaccination. Most available assessments of immunization strategies only considered universal varicella vaccination (alone or in combination with HZ by the live vaccine). The development of a new subunit recombinant zoster vaccine may provide new perspectives of HZ control. METHODS: We used a mathematical model for VZV in Norway based on the progressive immunity formulation of exogenous boosting. We ev

Large-Scale Complete-Genome Sequencing and Phylodynamic Analysis of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus Reveals Source-Sink Transmission Dynamics in the United States.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) has a high case-fatality rate in horses and humans, and Florida has been hypothesized to be the source of EEEV epidemics for the northeastern United States. To test this hypothesis, we sequenced complete genomes of 433 EEEV strains collected within the United States from 1934 to 2014. Phylogenetic analysis suggested EEEV evolves relatively slowly and that transmission is enzootic in Florida, characterized by higher genetic diversity and long-term local persistence. In contrast, EEEV strains in New York and Massachusetts were characterized by lower genet

What can large population-based birth cohort study ask about past, present and future of children with disorders of development, learning and behaviour?

A large cohort consisting of all children born to mothers from community provides 'natural' selection into different exposures and is a powerful resource for epidemiological research. A large population-based birth cohort with detailed systematic information already recorded, as part of longitudinal medical care, historical and current school data, detailed birth certificate data and all three resources available for every member of the birth cohort, are extremely rare. Our population-based birth cohort consists of all children born between 1976 and 2000 to mothers residing in Olmsted County,

Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Seagull Chicks Is Related to the Consumption of Freshwater Food Resources.

Understanding the spread of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) in wild birds, particularly in those with opportunistic feeding behavior, is of interest for elucidating the epidemiological involvement of these birds in the maintenance and dissemination of the parasite. Overall, from 2009 to 2011, we collected sera from 525 seagull chicks (Yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) and Audouin's gull (L. audouinii)) from 6 breeding colonies in Spain and tested them using the modified agglutination test (MAT) for the presence of antibodies against T. gondii. Chick age was estimated from bill length. Main
