Evaluating the effectiveness of email-based nudges to reduce postoperative opioid prescribing: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical patients are commonly prescribed more opioids at discharge than needed to manage their postoperative pain. These excess opioids increase the risks of new persistent opioid use, opioid-induced ventilatory impairment and opioid diversion. This study tests the effectiveness of two behavioural nudges, one based on peer behaviour and one based on best practice guidelines, in reducing excessive postoperative opioid prescriptions. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study will be conducted at 19 hospitals within a large healthcare delivery system in northern California, USA. Three surgi

Can Postoperative Pain Be Prevented in Bariatric Surgery? Efficacy and Usability of Fascial Plane Blocks: a Retrospective Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Providing analgesia after bariatric surgery might be challenging due to a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and the increased sensitivity to respiratory depression triggered by opioid overuse after surgery. Various combination methods with paracetamol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and other pain medications such as ketamine or gabapentin have been suggested for reduction of the opioid usage. Regional anesthetic techniques represent a valuable option as they improve patient comfort while reducing opioid-related side effects. In this study, we have

The anatomical, electrophysiological and histological observations of muscle contraction units in rabbits: a new perspective on nerve injury and regeneration.

In the conventional view a muscle is composed of intermediate structures before its further division into microscopic muscle fibers. Our experiments in mice have confirmed this intermediate structure is composed of the lamella cluster formed by motor endplates, the innervating nerve branches and the corresponding muscle fibers, which can be viewed as an independent structural and functional unit. In this study, we verified the presence of these muscle construction units in rabbits. The results showed that the muscular branch of the femoral nerve sent out 4-6 nerve branches into the quadriceps

The importance of the size of the trunk inclination angle in the early detection of scoliosis in children.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of idiopathic scoliosis is one factor in determining treatment effectiveness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the importance of the size of the trunk inclination angle (ATI) for the early detection of scoliosis in preschool- and school-age children, taking into account the location and size of the spine curvature. METHODS: The study included a group of 216 children (mean age 11.54 years, standard deviation ± 3.05), who had previously untreated idiopathic scoliosis and a Cobb angle of ≥ 10°. The ATI values were compared with the corresponding Cobb ang
