Sciatic nerve injuries associated with acetabular fractures may be a result of the initial trauma or injury at the time of surgical reconstr … tention to intraoperative limb positioning, retractor placement, and instrumentation. Somatosensory evoked potentials and spontaneous electromyography may help minimize iatrogenic nerve injury. Heterotopic ossification prophylaxis can help reduce delayed sciatic nerve entrapment. Reports on sciatic nerve decompression are not uniformly consistent but appear to have …

The use of a new device consisting of a small vibrator to deliver functional vibratory stimulation (FVS) to the arm resulted in improvements … by increasing the excitability of the motor cortex or the spinal motor neurons using somatosensory-evoked potentials, transcranial magnetic stimulation, F-wave, and single photon emission computed tomography. Our results did not detect an increase of excitability in the motor cortex or in spinal motor neurons by FVS.

Although atherothrombotic complications due to ovulation induction are well known in the literature, there is no previous report specifically on the presentation of a lateral medullary infarction. Recently, we have encountered a 36 years old woman with primary infertility having acute vertiginous attack after ovulation induction. Audiovestibular test battery revealed bilateral normal hearing, bilateral gaze nystagmus, rebound nystagmus beating toward the right side, loss of visual suppression with augmentation of caloric nystagmus in light on the left side, and delayed vestibular evoked myogen

Seventy-seven patients with panic attacks (PA) with or without agoraphobic disorders and 28 healthy controls have been studied using clinico-neurological and psychological methods as well as EEG and auditory event-related evoked potentials (EP) recording. PA patients with agoraphobic disorders featured a significant decrease of density of a-rhythm power and an increase of b-rhythm power in the right hemisphere that reflected a substantial activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation. At the same time, a significant increase of q-rhythm power in temporal areas of the right hemi…

One eye of rd12 mice received a sub-retinal injection of a vector carrying normal human RPE65 cDNA at post-natal day 18, and at 6- and 13-months of age. Electroretinograms (ERGs) and visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded to luminance, and to spatially and temporally modulated stimuli to assess the consequences of delayed treatment on visual pathway function. Early treatment resulted in better overall retinal rescue and better rescue of cone-mediated function. VEPs to low temporal frequency luminance modulation were well preserved at all but the oldest treatment age and corresponded to …

Patients with writer's cramp (WC) show abnormalities of sensorimotor integration possibly contributing to their motor deficit. We studied sensorimotor integration by determining short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI) in 12 WC patients and 10 age-matched healthy controls. A conditioning electrical median nerve stimulus was followed 14 to 36 msec later by transcranial magnetic stimulation of the contralateral primary motor cortex, and motor evoked potentials (MEP) were recorded from the relaxed or contracting abductor pollicis brevis muscle (APB). SAI was normal in WC but during APB relaxation …

OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI findings of two pediatric patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL).
CASE REPORTS: Two male patients (two-year and three-months-old, and one year and four-months-old) presented with sudden dumbness. Physical and neurological examinations were unremarkable besides bilateral hypoacusia. All the laboratory investigation was negative, and brain stem auditory evoked potentials showed deep bilateral deafness in both cases. MRI studies revealed normal inner ears and multifocal white matter areas of slight low signal on T1-weighted images and high signal on…

Stereoscopic vision is based on small differences in both retinal images known as retinal disparities. We investigated the cortical responses to retinal disparities in a patient suffering from occipital epilepsy by recording evoked potentials to random dot stereograms (RDS) from subdural electrodes placed in the parieto-occipito-temporal junction, medial surface of the occipital lobe (pericalcarine cortex) and basal surface of the occipital and temporal lobes (fusiform gyrus). Clear responses to disparity present in RDS were found in the fusiform cortex. We observed that the fusiform responses…

Besides polysomnographic techniques, other neurophysiological methods have been utilized in order to understand the pathophysiology of restless legs and periodic limb movement syndromes. By using electromyography with nerve conduction velocity (EMG-CV) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) it has been possible to determine how frequently each muscle was involved in periodic limb movements, how frequently EMG activity started in a given muscle and the time delay and pattern of activation between the first and the other activated muscles. The etiology of symptoms does not involve structural…

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) is a rare, but important cause of sensorineural hearing loss. Patients with asymmetri … The golden standard for audiologic diagnostics of vestibular schwannoma is BAEP (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials). Patients with pathological findings of BAEP should undergo MRI of the posterior fossa. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging is the best and final tool for making a diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma.

Repetitive movements have been reported to induce task-specific changes of intracortical inhibition and facilitation, but the mechanism operating shortly after hand movement is unclear. Transcranial magnetic single and paired stimuli (2 ms) were applied to 15 healthy subjects at rest and 1 s after repetitive (every 6 s) active and passive hand extensions. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from hand extensors (agonists) and flexors (antagonists). A strong overall inhibitory effect was observed after applying paired stimuli. In agonists only, active movements produced significantly la…

We describe a 66-year-old, HIV-seropositive patient presenting with ataxia and upper limb rhythmic myoclonus activated by postural maintenance. Electromyograph (EMG) recordings of the forearm muscles showed 50-msec bursts, with a frequency of 10 Hz, concurring with frontocentral electroencephalograph (EEG) rhythmic activity. Autoregressive spectral analysis applied to the EEG-EMG traces made it possible to detect significant coherence between the rhythmic EEG discharges and EMG bursts. The amplitude of the middle-latency somatosensory evoked potentials was increased. Long-latency reflexes were…

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures the correlation between the fMRI response and stimulus properties. A linear relationship between neural activity and fMRI response is commonly assumed. However, the response to repetitive stimulation cannot be explained by a simple superposition of single-event responses. This might be due to neural adaptation or the hemodynamic changes underlying the fMRI BOLD response. To assess the influence of adaptation, the BOLD responses and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to identical stimuli were recorded. To achieve different adaptation levels, 2-…

BACKGROUND: A sudden unilateral hearing loss in childhood is commonly regarded as an unusual event.
CASE-REPORT: In this paper, we report of a 10 year old girl suffering from a unilateral right-sided sudden hearing loss following an acute infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which is also rarely observed. Maximum hearing loss was estimated around 30 dB (0.25-6 kHz), which resolved after infusions using plasma expanders. Both transitory and distortion product otoacoustic emissions remained absent, while latencies of acoustically evoked potentials were normal.
DISCUSSION: This suggests a dama…

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a component of the auditory evoked event-related potentials (ERP) that assesses automatic sound change detection and is disturbed in schizophrenic patients. Animal experimental evidence has linked the generation of MMN to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. We investigated the neuromagnetic mismatch field (MMF) in healthy volunteers before and after intravenous application of a subanesthetic dose of the NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine (0.3 mg/kg). Ketamine had a significant influence on latency and dipole moment of the MMF, whereas the N100m latency of the

OBJECTIVE: We report an electrophysiological method to differentiate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) from cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
METHODS: Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) by transcranial magnetic stimulation were investigated in patients with ALS (n=10) and CSM (n=9). In addition to limb MEPs using the triple stimulation technique (TST) at upper limbs, MEPs recorded from trapezius muscles were compared with those obtained from 23 normal subjects. The parameters studied were: central motor conduction time, amplitude ratio and, for the trapezius, the interside asymmetry.
