Hearing preservation and tumour control after radiosurgery for NF2-related vestibular schwannomas.

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed the effects of stereotactic radiosurgery on tumour control and cranial nerve function in patients with vestibular schwannomas (VS) secondary to neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). Irradiation was performed with a Gamma Knife, model C equipped with a high-precision, robotized positioning system (APS). METHODOLOGY: This study included 18 patients with 25 VSs secondary to NF2 that were treated from 2001 to 2010 with radiosurgery at our Gamma Knife Center. The radiosurgical procedure included high-resolution conformational dose-planning with multiple, small-diameter isocenters

Up-regulation of vasopressin V(1a) receptor mRNA in rat facial motoneurons following axotomy.

We have reported previously that axotomy induced a marked increase of vasopressin receptor binding in the adult rat facial nucleus, suggesting an increased number of vasopressin receptors. These receptors were pharmacologically undistinguishable from peripheral V(1a) vasopressin receptors. In the present study, we show, using in situ hybridization and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), that axotomy regulates the expression of the vasopressin V(1a) receptor mRNA in the facial nucleus. Results were obtained from adult male rats killed 1 week following crush of the right fa

Morphometric evaluation of the infralabyrinthine approach to the internal auditory canal.

Morphometric evaluation of the infralabyrinthine approach to the internal auditory canal (IAC) was performed using 20 fresh human temporal bones in order to assess the exposure limitations, inherent risks and technical difficulties that may arise due to common anatomic variations of this region. While performing the infralabyrinthine approach to the IAC, minor problems such as an anteriorly placed sigmoid sinus were easily managed. However, in 50% of the specimens, this approach was limited due to variations of the jugular bulb, restricting access to the IAC. Sacrificing the endolymphatic duct

Use of homologous bone in maxillofacial surgery.

Homologous bone grafts were used in 135 maxillofacial surgical procedures, including acute midfacial fracture repair (n = 77), elective osteotomies of the facial bones (n = 35), secondary correction of traumatic deformities (n = 6), mandibular reconstruction (n = 10), facial bone augmentation (n = 5), and reconstruction of maxillary tumor defects (n = 2). Postsurgical complications occurred in five of the patients. This article reviews the rationale for using homologous bone grafts, their immune response, how they heal, and the risk of transmission of disease.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection of the temple region of the face: Case report.

RATIONALE: A carbuncle is a type of superficial soft-tissue infection involving hair follicles, typically starting as a furuncle. Multiple furuncles can coalesce to form a carbuncle. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common commensal organism on the skin and is known to cause infections, particularly in hospitalized patients or those living in nursing homes. This case report describes a patient with a right facial carbuncle complicated by co-infection with COVID-19 and drug toxicity. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-year-old Malaysian Chinese woman with a history of chronic hypert

Grafts of autogenous coronoid process to reconstruct the mandibular condyle in children with unilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint: long-term effects on mandibular growth.

Injury to the mandibular condyle in children usually leads to malocclusion and disharmony of facial growth. Our aim was to study the facial growth after reconstruction of the mandibular condyle using autogenous coronoid process grafts in children with unilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We followed up 10 growing patients with unilateral bony ankylosis of the TMJ who had been admitted to the West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University (Chengdu, China) between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2012. There were three boys and seven girls, age range 5-12 years at the

Sliding genioplasty for correction of chin abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Correction of chin underprojection has a significant effect on facial symmetry. Alloplastic chin implants and sliding genioplasty represent the accepted methods of chin augmentation. While both procedures may be used for retrognathia or microgenia, the sliding genioplasty may also be used in chin asymmetry, prognathia, and vertical height discrepancies. We report our finding from a 5-year review of our experience with sliding genioplasty. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the results of sliding genioplasties performed by residents and private practitioners, to illustrate the versatility and

Hippotherapy in the Treatment of CMD and Bruxism in Dentistry.

Dysfunctions and disorders of the craniomandibular system are accompanied by pathophysiological changes of muscle groups in the throat/neck and facial area, e.g., pain in the jaw and muscles of mastication and disturbance of occlusion, leading to teeth injury (loss of dental hard tissue, fractures/sensibility disorders, etc.). For muscular dysfunctions, even in the context of psychosomatic disorders and chronic stress, hippotherapy is particularly suitable, since it helps actively to relieve muscle tensions. In the current project we combined hippotherapy with progressive muscle relaxation (PM

Physiological reactivity at rest and in response to social or emotional stimuli after a traumatic brain injury: A systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Numerous studies have shown that alterations in physiological reactivity (PR) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are possibly associated with emotional deficits. We conducted a systematic review of these studies that evaluated PR in adults with moderate-to-severe TBI, either at rest or in response to emotional, stressful, or social stimuli. We focused on the most common measures of physiological response, including heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), electrodermal activity (EDA), salivary cortisol, facial electromyography (EMG), and bl

Subperiosteal face lift: a 200-case, 4-year review.

The subperiosteal face lift is a procedure designed to rejuvenate the upper and middle thirds of the face. Herein is reviewed a 4-year series of 200 consecutive patients who have undergone a subperiosteal face lift with a special emphasis on handling of the zygomatic arch. The main operative indication was significant ptosis of the midface soft tissue. Dissection of the maxilla, zygoma, periorbital areas, and the anterior arch was carried out through either a gingivo-buccal sulcus incision (39 cases) or a subciliary incision (161 cases). Dissection of the posterior arch was carried out in a pl

In-House 3D Printing for Craniofacial Trauma: 7-Year Review.

INTRODUCTION: Complex facial trauma presents a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon, as the loss of facial buttresses makes accurate reduction of fractures more and more difficult. Accurate 3D-printed models and virtual surgical planning have become a mainstay in many other aspects of craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, turnaround times from industry produced models frequently preclude their use in the unplanned acute surgical setting. PURPOSE: We seek to evaluate the use of in-house printed 3D models for facial trauma and the efficacy and safety of the procedures performed with the aid

The α2δ-1-NMDAR1 interaction in the trigeminal ganglion contributes to orofacial ectopic pain following inferior alveolar nerve injury.

Orofacial ectopic pain can often arise following nerve injury. However, the exact mechanism responsible for orofacial ectopic pain induced by trigeminal nerve injury remains unknown. The α2δ-1 and glutamate N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR) interactions have been demonstrated to participate in neuropathic pain regulation in the spinal cord. In this study, a rat model of inferior alveolar nerve transection (IANX) was used to investigate the role of α2δ-1-NMDAR1 interaction in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) in regard to the regulation of orofacial ectopic pain. Western blot (WB) analysis i
