From BMI to TMI: revisiting adiposity and fitness assessment in young active adults through a historical and contemporary lens.

BACKGROUND: Traditional reliance on body mass index (BMI) to assess adiposity may misclassify physically active individuals with high lean mass. The triponderal mass index (TMI) has emerged as a potentially more accurate alternative, but evidence in physically active populations is limited. PURPOSE: To examine the associations of TMI and BMI with bioimpedance-derived adiposity and selected hematological markers in physically active young adults. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, (n = 59) participants (male = 37, female = 22; age 22.63 ± 2.29 years) underwent anthropometry, whole-body b

The Impact of Diet on Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity: A Cross-Sectional Case-Control Study.

Background and Objectives: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease primarily affecting hair follicles, characterized by painful nodules, abscesses, and sinus tract formation. Recent evidence suggests that weight management and nutritional factors may influence HS symptoms. This cross-sectional case-control study aimed to assess the impact of body composition and nutritional factors on HS severity. Materials and Methods: We included 50 patients with HS and 50 matched controls comparable in body mass index (BMI), sex, and age. The data collected included 3-day food r

Longitudinal changes in bone mineral density may be associated with long-term survival in patients with cirrhosis: A proof of concept of study.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of longitudinal changes in different body components measured via body composition analysis (BCA) on liver-related outcomes in patients with cirrhosis is poorly understood. We evaluated the prognostic relevance of longitudinal changes in body composition over one year in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: This was a follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial evaluating changes in bone density measured via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) upon vitamin D supplementation. Patients with available anthropometric indices, fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), bone

Identifying low muscle mass and monitoring body composition changes in newly diagnosed cancer patients: Agreement between multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Low muscle mass (MM) is significant in cancer patients, and computed tomography (CT) is considered the reference standard for MM assessment. We investigated the consistency of CT and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (mBIA) in detecting body composition at baseline and during anticancer treatment and the relationship between MM and malnutrition as well as complications in lung and cervical cancer patients. METHODS: Abdominal CT and mBIA were conducted to assess body composition at baseline for all patients and repeated for patients with cervical cancer after 4 wk of

Theabrownin inhibits obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in mice via serotonin-related signaling pathways and gut-liver axis.

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with obesity seriously threats public health. Our previous studies showed that dark tea had more potential on regulating lipid metabolism than other teas, and theabrownin (TB) was considered to be a main contributor to the bioactivity of dark tea. OBJECTIVES: This in vivo study aims to reveal the effects and molecular mechanisms of TB on NAFLD and obesity, and the role of the gut-liver axis is explored. METHODS: The histopathological examinations, biochemical tests, and nuclear magnetic resonance were applied to evaluate the effects of

Systematic metabolomic studies identified adult adiposity biomarkers with acetylglycine associated with fat loss in vivo.

Obesity is associated with various adverse health outcomes. Body fat (BF) distribution is recognized as an important factor of negative health consequences of obesity. Although metabolomics studies, mainly focused on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, have explored the biological mechanisms involved in the development of obesity, these proxy composite measures are not accurate and cannot reflect BF distribution, and thus may hinder accurate assessment of metabolic alterations and differential risk of metabolic disorders among individuals presenting adiposity differently throughout

Weight variability, physical functioning and incident disability in older adults.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine if greater variability in body mass index (BMI) is associated with declines in physical functioning and incident disability in older adults. METHODS: Included were participants from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study who had semi-annual BMI data during the first 3 years of follow-up. Participants were categorized into quintiles of BMI variability, using two methods. The first method used average successive variability, whereas the second method adjusted these values to remove the variability due to net change in BMI over the 3-year period. L

Effect of Intake of Leucine-Rich Protein Supplement in Parallel with Resistance Exercise on the Body Composition and Function of Healthy Adults.

Although sarcopenia has been dealt with in several studies, the standardized guidelines for preventing sarcopenia resulting from increased life expectancy are still insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of daily resistance exercise and the intake of leucine-rich protein supplements daily for 12 weeks on the body composition and physical function of healthy adults aged >50 years living in Korea. The study analyzed 50 healthy people without medical conditions, who were randomly assigned to two groups (taking either protein powder or placebo powder) twice a day for 12 weeks. A

Increased Glucose Availability Attenuates Myocardial Ketone Body Utilization.

Background Perturbations in myocardial substrate utilization have been proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiac dysfunction in diabetic subjects. The failing heart in nondiabetics tends to decrease reliance on fatty acid and glucose oxidation, and increases reliance on ketone body oxidation. In contrast, little is known regarding the mechanisms mediating this shift among all 3 substrates in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that changes in myocardial glucose utilization directly influence ketone body catabolism. Methods and Results We examined ventricular-card

Effects of 3-week total meal replacement vs. typical food-based diet on human brain functional magnetic resonance imaging food-cue reactivity and functional connectivity in people with obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Calorie restriction via total meal replacement (TMR) results in greater reduction of food cravings compared to reduced-calorie typical diet (TD). Direct evidence of the impact of these interventions on human brain fMRI food-cue reactivity (fMRI-FCR) and functional connectivity is absent. We examined the effects of a 3-week 1120 kcal/d TMR intervention as compared to an iso-caloric TD intervention using an fMRI-FCR paradigm. METHODS: Thirty-two male and female subjects with obesity (19-60 years; 30-39.9 kg/m2) participated in a randomized two-group repeated measures dietary interve
