The symptoms, clinical signs, postmortem examination and histological findings of a rabbit with malignant thymoma are described. Moreover, the recent literature was reviewed with regard to symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of thymoma in the rabbit. Malignant thymoma is a relatively rare tumour in rabbits. Symptoms are caused by the space-occupying mass in the cranial part of the thorax and include dyspnoea and inferior caval vein syndrome. Several paraneoplastic syndromes are associated with thymoma, of which bilateral exophthalmos is one of most striking in rabbits. A definitive diagnosis is

Primary female genital tract non Hodgkin's lymphoma is a rare presentation for a common disease in the childhood, and its classification as primary extranodal lymphoma is still controversial. There are a few cases reported as a primary precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma of the female genital tract, but there is not any case reported as primary precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma of the ovary in childhood. Herein we describe a 16 years old young woman with bilateral ovarian tumors, paraaortic lymphoadenophaty and disseminate disease to the female genital tract including extension of th

Rheumatic heart disease with moderate mitral stenosis and a large left atrial (LA) thrombus was diagnosed in a 45-year-old woman at a peripheral hospital. Oral anticoagulation was administered, and the patient was referred for further management. During the intervening period, sudden worsening of dyspnea developed in the patient and a repeat echocardiogram revealed a large thrombus freely vacillating within the left atrium. Urgent open mitral valvotomy and LA thrombus removal were planned. However, as the patient was being prepared for surgery, she had a fatal cardiorespiratory arrest and coul

Histoplasmosis is an endemic fungal infection that can involve any organ when disseminated. Although oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and endobronchial involvement have been described, direct tracheal involvement has not been reported. We describe the first case of disseminated histoplasmosis with direct involvement of the trachea. The endobronchial manifestations of histoplasmosis are reviewed.

Dextromethorphan is a widely available over-the-counter antitussive that produces intoxicating, hallucinogenic, and dissociative effects at doses significantly exceeding the therapeutic range. We report the deaths of five teenage males in three incidents in three states (WA, FL, and VA) who purposefully ingested large doses of dextromethorphan for recreational purposes and died as a result of the direct toxic effects of the drug. The dextromethorphan was obtained from the same internet supplier in each case. Postmortem blood dextromethorphan concentrations ranged from 950 to 3230 ng/mL (median

Suicide patterns and rates differ in various populations and culture. It is observed from various studies that more than 90 percent of suicides are due to mental disorders. This behaviour, although often triggered by external factors, occurs in vulnerable individuals who have a neurobiological and often familial predisposition. Here, a case is reported wherein an apparently healthy married addicted male committed suicide by taking unprescribed twenty tablets of phenobarbital (60 mg) under suspicious condition.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of human babesiosis in North America are caused by Babesia microti, which is endemic in the northeastern and upper midwestern United States. Although the disease is usually transmitted by a tick bite, there has been an increase in the number of transfusion-transmitted cases reported. We describe a fatal case of transfusion-transmitted babesiosis in a nonendemic state, Delaware.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 43-year-old Caucasian woman with history of transfusion-dependent Diamond-Blackfan syndrome, hepatitis C, and splenectomy. She was admitted initially for presumptiv

Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) is an uncommon but potentially fatal adverse reaction to transfusion of plasma containing blood components. We describe a case of 10-year-old male child with aplastic anemia, platelet count of 7800/l, B positive blood group who developed fever (39.2C), difficulty in breathing and cyanosis within 2 hrs after transfusion of a random platelet concentrate. Despite the best resuscitative efforts, the child died within next 24 hrs. The present case highlights the fact that TRALI should be kept as a differential diagnosis in all patients developing acute

In epileptic patients, focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is pathologically characterized by irregular cortical lamination, blurring of the grey and white matter border and the occurrence of dysplastic cells in the cerebral cortex. Here, we report the case of a 42-year-old male showing developmental delay, transient repetition of hypoglycemic attack and cortical dysplasia, partly mimicking FCD. He had no family history of neurological disorders. He had never been able to stand independently and had always been unable to speak. He developed generalized convulsion in infancy, and then, in the absenc

Necropsy of an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) neonate that stranded dead on Folly Beach, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA, on 17 November 2007, revealed multiple congenital heart malformations. Cardiac anomalies included a hypertrophic right ventricle, ventricular septal defect (VSD), aortic dilation, atrial septal defect (ASD) between a functionally common atrium and a left atrial remnant, subvalvular pulmonic stenosis, and a hypoplastic pulmonary artery and mitral valve. Few incidences of abnormal cardiac development in cetaceans have been published. The case study se

The intraoperative management of a neonate with esophageal atresia (EA) and distal tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a true anesthetic challenge. Pediatric anesthesia textbooks recommend a distal tracheal intubation beyond the fistula and spontaneous ventilation, if possible, until surgical control of the fistula is achieved to minimize gastric distention. A full-term neonate with Trisomy 21 presented with an EATEF and was transferred to the operating theater for repair after appropriate evaluation. After induction of anesthesia, a size 3.0 endotracheal tube was inserted orally with confirmat

We report here an autopsy case of perinatal hypoxic brain damage showing hypoglossal hypoplasia and hyperplasia of the area postrema (AP) in the medulla oblongata. A 16-year-old girl who suffered from severe psychomotor developmental delay, epilepsy and tongue fasciculation, was shown by pathology to have a medullary change, as well as tongue atrophy and severe sclerotic changes in the cerebrum and cerebellum. Moderate to severe neuronal loss and gliosis were found in the brainstem. But neurons were preserved in the trigeminal nuclei, abducens nucleus and dorsal vagal nucleus. We performed a p

A 76-year-old female was referred because of violaceous dermatitis on sun-exposed skin. She had associated muscle weakness, dysphagia, dysarthria and reported an unintended weight loss. The clinical presentation gave a suspicion of dermatomyositis, and diagnostic procedures revealed a small-cell lung cancer. She was treated with prednisolone, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite intended curative treatment, she died of the cancer six months later. This case emphasizes the importance of a thorough examination for an underlying cancer, in patients diagnosed with dermatomyositis.

A 69-year-old woman presented with shivering and pain in the lower extremities on 5 April 2006; she was referred to the dermatology division of our hospital on the following day with difficulty in walking. She had been suffering from non-viral, non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis, and was being treated by the Division of Internal Medicine. Physical examination showed edema in the lower extremities and light purpuras on the groin and legs. Low blood pressure had been observed since admission. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) was suspected on the basis of the skin symptoms, systemic conditions, and magnetic

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium is an opportunistic pathogen of humans with diverse hosts, encompassing animals as well as human beings. In the past twenty years, there has been a rise in the instances of nosocomial infections that are linked to antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecium. The acquisition of diverse antimicrobial resistance factors has driven the global development of robust and convergent adaptive mechanisms within the healthcare environment. The presence of microorganisms in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patient populations has been significantly aided by the facilitation
