ASCIA Guideline: Infant Feeding for Food Allergy Prevention.

BACKGROUND: The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) Guideline: Infant Feeding for Food Allergy Prevention is an update of the 2016 ASCIA guideline. This updated guideline provides recommendations specifically in relation to infant feeding for food allergy prevention. METHODS: A review of the guideline began in 2024, informed by a systematic evidence review process and using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II (AGREE II) framework. Where evidence was lacking, a formal Delphi process was used to develop recommendations based on expert consensus.

Mechanisms of transcutaneous bilateral auricular vagus nerve stimulation in treating functional dyspepsia through promoting M2 macrophage polarization.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is characterized by duodenal mucosal barrier dysfunction and chronic low-grade inflammation. Macrophage polarization imbalance, particularly the predominance of pro-inflammatory M1 over anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes, contributes significantly to FD pathogenesis. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapeutic approach for gastrointestinal disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic mechanisms of taVNS in FD treatment, specifically focusing on its effects on M2 macroph

Development of new screening tools to evaluate dog exposure to Phlebotomus tobbi and Phlebotomus papatasi sand flies.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniases are a group of medically and veterinary important diseases caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania (Kinetoplastida) and transmitted by blood-feeding female sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae). To assess the risk of Leishmania transmission, host exposure to sand fly bites can be measured through the detection of host antibodies to vector salivary proteins. Anti-sand fly saliva antibodies are elicited by repeated exposure of the mammalian host to sand fly salivary proteins deposited into the host skin during blood feeding. These antibodies are species-spec

Long-term efficacy of fluralaner (Exzolt®) in Gallus gallus domesticus against epidemiologically relevant triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): a potential complementary strategy for Chagas disease control.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease control relies primarily on vector control using pyrethroid insecticide sprays with residual action in domestic and peridomestic environments. However, the necessity for repeated applications and the development of pyrethroid resistance in some countries have undermined this strategy. Alternative control tools are needed, and host-targeted systemic insecticides offer an alternative approach by creating toxic blood meals for hematophagous vectors. In peridomestic settings, chickens are major blood meal sources for triatomines. This study evaluated the insecticidal act

[Variability in urban malaria transmission across health districts in Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire].

RATIONALE: Approximately 20 years ago, studies conducted in the city of Bouaké revealed a high level of malaria transmission, primarily due to the Anopheles gambiae vector increasing during the rainy season. The National Malaria Control Program implemented control efforts involving the distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). However, the political and military crisis from 2002 to 2011 caused many residents to leave the city, leaving the natural environment largely undisturbed. The subsequent return of the population to Bouaké necessitated implementing new LLIN-based control pro

Maternal and cross-stage effects of Metarhizium pingshaense fungal infection on the malaria mosquito Anopheles coluzzii life-history.

BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Metarhizium are widely used as eco-friendly biocontrol agents against insect vectors, offering a cost-effective alternative to chemical insecticides. While these fungi have demonstrated potential as larvicides against malaria vectors, their impacts on mosquito life-history traits and maternal effects remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of locally isolated Metarhizium pingshaense strains (S10 and S26) on survival, development, reproductive fitness, and maternal effects in Anopheles coluzzii mosquitoes. METHODS: We assessed

Pasteurised donor human milk for HIV-exposed infants in Saskatchewan, Canada: a feasibility trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurised donor human milk (PDHM) provides nutritional and immunological benefits for vulnerable infants, yet its use remains largely restricted to neonatal intensive care units. The protective effects of PDHM are well established for preterm and very low birth weight infants, but little is known about its feasibility and acceptability for other populations, including HIV-exposed infants. In high-income countries, infant feeding guidelines historically prioritised exclusive formula feeding to eliminate HIV transmission through breast milk. More recently, guidance has incorporat

Impact of chronic ethanol consumption and SARS-COV-2 on the liver and intestine: A pilot dose-response study in mice.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a marked increase in alcohol consumption. COVID-19 superimposed on underlying liver disease notably worsens the outcome of many forms of liver injury. The goal of a current pilot study was to test the dual exposure of alcohol and COVID-19 infection in an experimental animal model of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). METHODS: After 4 weeks of ethanol (EtOH) feeding, C57BL/6 male mice received SARS-CoV-2 (SARS2-N501YMA30) intranasally at 3 × 102, 1 × 103, 3 × 103, and 1 × 104 plaque-forming units (PFU). Mice we

Amblyostatin-1, the first salivary cystatin with host immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties from the Neotropical tick Amblyomma sculptum, vector of Brazilian spotted fever.

INTRODUCTION: The Neotropical tick Amblyomma sculptum is the primary vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Brazilian spotted fever, a disease associated with high fatality rates. Tick saliva, a complex mixture of bioactive molecules essential for successful blood feeding, facilitates pathogen transmission and modulates host immune responses. A comprehensive evaluation of the salivary gland transcriptome database reveals that protease inhibitors are abundantly expressed molecules in tick saliva during feeding. Thus, this study aims to describe and characterize the most express

Post-treatment transmissibility of Plasmodium falciparum infections: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening malaria control and expediting progress toward elimination requires targeting gametocytes to interrupt transmission. Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) effectively clears Plasmodium falciparum asexual parasites and immature gametocytes but has a limited impact on mature gametocytes, which mosquitoes ingest during a blood meal. To address this gap, the World Health Organization recommends adding a single low dose of primaquine (PQ) to ACT regimens. This study assessed the efficacy of a single low-dose PQ for P. falciparum gametocyte clearance and evaluated mos

Prevalence and determinants of inappropriate complementary feeding practices among children aged 6-23 months in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate complementary feeding (CF) increases the risk of the triple burden of malnutrition, including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity. Chiang Mai, a major city in northern Thailand, is experiencing rapid urbanization and growing cultural diversity driven by tourism, which may influence CF practices. However, data on these practices remain limited, emphasizing the need for context-specific interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 1,122 caregivers of children aged 6-23 months was conducted between January and May 2024. Data w

Risk Factors Associated with Postnatal Growth Velocity in Preterm Infants in a Tertiary Hospital in Northeast Mexico.

Background: Suboptimal growth velocity (GV)-weight < 15 g/kg/day, head circumference (HC) < 0.9 cm/week, and length < 1 cm/week-are related to neurodevelopmental problems. Comorbidities such as sepsis, patent ductus arteriosus, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, hemodynamic instability with use of inotropes, and necrotizing enterocolitis, among others, have been related to suboptimal GV. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate GV in preterm newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary-level hospital in Mexico in the first 28 days of life and determine the main factors related to subopti

IgM Antibodies Targeting Malondialdehyde Promote Complement-Mediated Liver Injury in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is associated with elevated blood immunoglobulin-type M (IgM) levels and hepatic lipid peroxidation. Nevertheless, the functional relevance of systemic IgM targeting lipid peroxidation products during ALD is incompletely understood. METHODS: Levels of IgM and IgG recognising malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde (MAA), as a hallmark epitope of lipid peroxidation, as well as complement factors were assessed in the serum of patients with ALD. The influence of alcohol abstinence on anti-MAA IgM and IgG levels was determined in AUD patients. A chron

Exercise-Stimulated Resolvin Biosynthesis in the Adipose Tissue Is Abrogated by High-Fat Diet-Induced Adrenergic Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Diet-induced white adipose tissue inflammation is associated with insulin resistance and metabolic perturbations. Conversely, exercise protects against the development of diet-induced chronic inflammation and insulin resistance independent of weight loss; however, the mechanisms remain largely unknown. We have recently shown that through adrenergic stimulation of macrophages, exercise promotes resolution of acute peritoneal inflammation by enhancing the biosynthesis of specialized proresolving lipid mediators. In this study, we sought to determine whether exercise stimulates prores
