Finding potential inhibitors from phytochemicals against nucleoprotein of crimean congo fever virus using in silico approach.

The Crimean Congo virus has been reported to be a part of the spherical RNA-enveloped viruses from the Bunyaviridae family. Crimean Congo fever (CCHF) is a fatal disease with having fatality rate of up to 40%. It is declared endemic by the World Health Organization. Many outbreaks of CCHF have been reported over the years. Former studies on CCHF have reported that the nucleoprotein of CCHF, being a pivotal protein in the replication process of the virus, is a potential target for antiviral drugs. However, there is no specific drug that can be used to treat this fatal disease and laboratory tes

New Route to the Production of Almond Beverages Using Hydrodynamic Cavitation.

Perceived as a healthy food, almond beverages are gaining ever-increasing consumer preference across nonalcoholic vegetable beverages, ranking in first place among oilseed-based drinks. However, costly raw material; time and energy consuming pre- and posttreatments such as soaking, blanching and peeling; and thermal sterilization hinder their sustainability, affordability and spread. Hydrodynamic cavitation processes were applied, for the first time, as a single-unit operation with straightforward scalability, to the extraction in water of almond skinless kernels in the form of flour and fine

Cold Plasma Controls Nitrite Hazards by Modulating Microbial Communities in Pickled Radish.

The hazard of nitrite caused by microorganisms is the main food safety problem in the pickle production. To seek a method to control the nitrite hazards of pickles by regulating microbial community without additional substances, we focused on cold plasma because Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria have different degrees of sensitivity to the sterilization of cold plasma. Using radish pickles as the experimental object, based on colony counting, dynamic monitoring of pH and nitrite, qPCR and high-throughput sequencing, it was found that when the raw material was treated with dielectric bar

Current state of phoenixin-the implications of the pleiotropic peptide in stress and its potential as a therapeutic target.

Phoenixin is a pleiotropic peptide, whose known functions have broadened significantly over the last decade. Initially first described as a reproductive peptide in 2013, phoenixin is now recognized as being implicated in hypertension, neuroinflammation, pruritus, food intake, anxiety as well as stress. Due to its wide field of involvement, an interaction with physiological as well as psychological control loops has been speculated. It has shown to be both able to actively reduce anxiety as well as being influenced by external stressors. Initial rodent models have shown that central administrat

Determination of Pesticide Residues in IV Range Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L.) and Its Industrial Wastes.

Fourth-range products are those types of fresh fruit and vegetables that are ready for raw consumption or after cooking, and belong to organic or integrated cultivations. These products are subject to mild post-harvesting processing procedures (selection, sorting, husking, cutting, and washing), and are afterwards packaged in packets or closed food plates, with an average shelf life of 5-10 days. Artichokes are stripped of the leaves, stems and outer bracts, and the remaining heads are washed with acidifying solutions. The A LC-MS/MS analytical method was developed and validated following SANT

Exploring the Role of Mediterranean and Westernized Diets and Their Main Nutrients in the Modulation of Oxidative Stress in the Placenta: A Narrative Review.

Oxidative stress is a major cellular event that occurs in the placenta, fulfilling critical physiological roles in non-pathological pregnancies. However, exacerbated oxidative stress is a pivotal feature of different obstetric complications, like pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and other diseases. Compelling evidence supports the relevant role of diet during pregnancy, with pleiotropic consequences for maternal well-being. The present review aims to examine the complex background between oxidative stress and placental development and function in physiological conditions, also intendin

Intestinal upregulation and specific dynamic action in snakes - Implications for the 'pay before pumping' hypothesis.

Animals which feed infrequently and on large prey, like many snake species, are characterized by a high magnitude of gut upregulation upon ingesting a meal. The intensity of intestinal upregulation was hypothesized to be proportional to the time and energy required for food processing (Specific-Dynamic-Action; SDA); hence, a positive correlation between the scope of intestinal growth and SDA response can be deduced. Such a correlation would support the so far not well established link between the intestinal and metabolic consequences of digestion. In this study I tested this prediction using a

The Contribution of Dietary Fructose to Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Fructose, especially industrial fructose (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) is commonly used in all kinds of beverages and processed foods. Liver is the primary organ for fructose metabolism, recent studies suggest that excessive fructose intake is a driving force in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Dietary fructose metabolism begins at the intestine, along with its metabolites, may influence gut barrier and microbiota community, and contribute to increased nutrient absorption and lipogenic substrates overflow to the liver. Overwhelming fructose and the gut microbiota-derived fru

Impact of Campylobacter spp. on the Integrity of the Porcine Gut.

Campylobacter (C.) is the most common food-borne zoonosis in humans, which mainly manifests with watery to bloody diarrhoea. While C. jejuni is responsible for most cases of infection, C. coli is less frequently encountered. The object of the study was to prove the clinical impact of mono- and co-colonisation of C. coli and C. jejuni on weaned piglets in an infection model and to investigate the impact on transepithelial transport processes in the jejunum and caecum. At an age of eight weeks, eight pigs were infected with C. coli (ST-5777), 10 pigs with C. jejuni (ST-122), eight pigs with both

Effect of fermentation with single and co-culture of lactic acid bacteria on okara: evaluation of bioactive compounds and volatile profiles.

Okara is the main soybean by-product resulting from the processing of soy milk and tofu. Despite being a product with a lot of potential and rich in many bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, it presents an unpleasant, rancid aroma. For this reason its use in the food industry is limited. In this study, we have reported the integral use of okara in a solid state fermentation process, conducted with wild strains of lactic acid bacteria, to evaluate the effect of bacterial metabolism on the volatile and polyphenolic profiles. Strains belonging to Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lacticaseibacillus

Phosphate removal from food industry wastewater by chemical precipitation treatment with biocalcium eggshell.

The physicochemical treatment (PT) of food industry wastewater was investigated. In the first stage, calcium magnesium acetate (CaMgAc4) was synthesized using eggshell (biocalcium), magnesium oxide and acetic acid in a 1:1:1 stoichiometric ratio. In the synthesis process, the thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) indicated that the reaction was endothermic and spontaneous. The samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). CaMgAc4 was used to precipitate the phosphate m

Object attachment and decision-making.

The perceived value of our possessions extends well beyond their monetary worth or utility. Many possessions produce abiding attachments and contain deep conceptual meanings, which strongly influence our drive to acquire, retain, or relinquish them. In both the endowment effect and hoarding disorder (HD) research had focused on the degree that a fear of loss produces overvaluation by owners. There is evidence for this at both the behavioral and neural level, for example with self-reported negative emotions and activation in the insula and anterior cingulate cortex when one struggles to relinqu

Pulses' germination and fermentation: Two bioprocessing against hypertension by releasing ACE inhibitory peptides.

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) is one of the main blood pressure regulators in the renin-angiotensin system leading to hypertension. Hypertension is known as the modern world disease which increases the risk of serious human health problems. Synthetic drugs and some natural compounds could treat this disease by binding to ACE and reducing its activity. Pulses, one of the legumes group, that are the rich in protein sources in the human diet, have several bioactive compounds with ACE inhibitory (ACE I) properties. However, several processes need to break down proteins and improve ACE I acti

Comparison of Oxidative Status of Human Milk, Human Milk Fortifiers and Preterm Infant Formulas.

Preterm and low birth weight infants require specific nutrition to overcome the accumulated growth deficit, and to prevent morbidities related to postnatal growth failure. In order to guarantee an adequate nutrient-intake, mother's own milk, when available, or donor human milk, are usually fortified with additional nutrients, in particular proteins. Fortification with processed ingredients may result in additional intake in oxidative compounds, deriving from extensive heat treatments, that are applied during processing. The aim of the present work was to compare the in vitro antioxidant activi

Nanoimmobilization of β-glucosidase onto hydroxyapatite.

β-Glucosidase is an enzyme of great industrial interest that is used in biorefineries and in the pharmaceutical, food, and beverage sectors, among others. These industrial processes would benefit from the use of immobilized enzyme systems that allow several reuses of the enzyme. A promising inorganic and nontoxic material for such application is hydroxyapatite (HA), which can be synthesized at nanometric scale, hence providing good accessibility of the substrate to the catalyst. Here, we carried out a systematic study to evaluate the feasibility of immobilizing β-glucosidase on HA nanoparticle

Homeostatic circuits selectively gate food cue responses in insular cortex.

Physiological needs bias perception and attention to relevant sensory cues. This process is 'hijacked' by drug addiction, causing cue-induced cravings and relapse. Similarly, its dysregulation contributes to failed diets, obesity, and eating disorders. Neuroimaging studies in humans have implicated insular cortex in these phenomena. However, it remains unclear how 'cognitive' cortical representations of motivationally relevant cues are biased by subcortical circuits that drive specific motivational states. Here we develop a microprism-based cellular imaging approach to monitor visual cue respo

A reward-centred model of anorexia nervosa: a focussed narrative review of the neurological and psychophysiological literature.

This focussed narrative review examines neurobiological and psychophysiological evidence supporting a role for altered reward processes in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). In AN, there does not appear to be a generalised inability to experience reward. Rather, data suggest that a reluctance to gain weight leads to an aversive appraisal of food- and taste-related stimuli. As a result, cues compatible with this aberrant mode of thinking become rewarding for the individual. Evidence also suggests that attribution of motivational salience to such cues promotes anorectic be

Prion-induced neurotoxicity: Possible role for cell cycle activity and DNA damage response.

Protein misfolding neurodegenerative diseases arise through neurotoxicity induced by aggregation of host proteins. These conditions include Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, tauopathies and prion diseases. Collectively, these conditions are a challenge to society because of the increasing aged population and through the real threat to human food security by animal prion diseases. It is therefore important to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie protein misfolding-induced neurotoxicity as this will form the basis for

Signal detection in FDA AERS database using Dirichlet process.

In the recent two decades, data mining methods for signal detection have been developed for drug safety surveillance, using large post-market safety data. Several of these methods assume that the number of reports for each drug-adverse event combination is a Poisson random variable with mean proportional to the unknown reporting rate of the drug-adverse event pair. Here, a Bayesian method based on the Poisson-Dirichlet process (DP) model is proposed for signal detection from large databases, such as the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) database. Instead of u
