Muscle Ultrasound in Inclusion Body Myositis: Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches With Clinical and MRI Findings.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is an inflammatory myopathy with an insidious onset, often making diagnosis challenging. Although neuroimaging has recently been included in diagnostic criteria, the role of muscle ultrasound-despite being a rapid and cost-effective tool-in IBM has been less extensively characterized. In this study, we aimed to explore whether qualitative and quantitative muscle ultrasound measures reflect the pattern of muscle involvement in IBM and are associated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. METHODS: Thirteen patients with histologically co

Application of Functional MRI in Parkinson's Disease and Default Mode Network: Review of the Literature.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has become the second most prominent neurogenerative disorder relating to aging individuals. PD involves the loss of neurons containing dopamine in the midbrain and leads to a number of motor issues as well as non-motor complications such as cognitive and psychological abnormalities. The default mode network (DMN) is a complex brain network primarily active during rest and serves multiple roles relating to memory, self-referential processing, social cognition and consciousness and awareness. Multiple brain regions are involved in the DMN such as the medial prefrontal c

Neural Markers of Treatment Response in Pediatric Anxiety and PTSD.

Pediatric anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with elevated threat sensitivity and impaired emotion regulation, accompanied by dysfunction in the neural circuits involved in these processes. Despite established treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, many children do not achieve remission, underscoring the importance of understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of these disorders. This review synthesizes current research on the neural predictors of treatment response and the neurofunctional cha

Ocular changes as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of dementia. AD diagnosis often involves a thorough assessment, including clinical evaluation, cognitive testing, medical history examination, genetic testing, and biomarker analysis. Currently, the invasive nature and high costs of biomarker testing, such as cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroimaging, have limited the early detection and intervention of the disease. Therefore, researchers have explored cheaper and less invasive options, such as ocular imaging. This review discusses the close rela

Explainable hierarchical machine-learning approaches for multimodal prediction of conversion from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that challenges early diagnosis and intervention, yet the black-box nature of many predictive models limits clinical adoption. In this study, we developed an advanced machine learning (ML) framework that integrates hierarchical feature selection with multiple classifiers to predict progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD. Using baseline data from 580 participants in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), categorized into stable MCI (sMCI) and progressive MCI (pMCI) subgroups, we analyzed features both indi

Reliability of Brain Activity During a Supine Bilateral Leg Press and Association With Concurrent 3D Knee Joint Biomechanics.

Previous neuroimaging studies have established a foundation of knowledge regarding the supraspinal control of lower extremity movements. However, the relationship between subtle differences in lower extremity kinematics and concurrent brain activity during motor tasks is mainly unknown. Additionally, there is limited information regarding the consistency of brain activation measures during a lower extremity motor task. The current study evaluated the within-session reliability of knee joint kinematics and brain activation during a supine bilateral leg press task using functional magnetic reson

Irregular temporal fluctuations in visual, cognitive and emotional brain regions in primary open-angle glaucoma patients.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is now seen as a progressively worsening neurodegenerative disorder. Previvors neuroimaging studies neglect dynamic brain activity, assuming static patterns in resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI), while intrinsic brain activity is dynamic and fluctuates over time. To test the time-varying brain activity in POAG patients, a temporal dynamic analysis of rs-fMRI data was conducted on 70 POAG patients and 45 healthy controls (HCs). The sliding-window method calculated dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF) across the brain, and group differenc

Modulation of cerebellar homotopic connectivity by modified electroconvulsive therapy at rest: Study of first-episode, drug-naive adolescent major depressive disorder.

Previous studies of brain function alterations that are associated with modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) for major depressive disorder (MDD) have yielded conflicting results because of variations in treatment durations, types of antidepressants, and disease course. Consequently, predicting the efficacy of MECT remains challenging. Thirty patients with first-episode, drug-naive adolescent MDD and 34 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological tests. The patients received MECT and underwent scanning at two time points (base

The association between longitudinal changes in inter-hemispheric IPS functional connectivity and math gains depends on children's age and task requirements.

The role of the approximate number system (ANS) in scaffolding symbolic mathematics remains unresolved. A prior neuroimaging study from our group (Suárez-Pellicioni & Booth, 2018) found no significant longitudinal effects of ANS acuity-indexed by intraparietal sulcus (IPS) activation-on gains in math fluency. However, the absence of age-specific analyses and exclusive focus on fluency, which emphasizes retrieval, may have contributed to these null findings. To address these limitations, the present study examined whether age moderates the relationship between inter-hemispheric IPS functional c

Advancing post-stroke outcome prediction with movement-specific structural and functional brain atlases.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, with motor deficits contributing significantly to post-stroke disability. Brain atlases hold promise for predicting motor outcomes post-stroke, but existing tools often lack comprehensive coverage of motor-related brain regions and do not integrate both structural and functional measures. This retrospective longitudinal study aimed to develop and evaluate neuroimaging biomarkers for predicting post-stroke motor outcomes by constructing comprehensive sensorimotor brain atlases. We developed two novel atlases: a sensorimotor structural connectiv

FROG: A Fine-Grained Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Network With Self-Supervised Guidance for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has demonstrated significant potential in the early diagnosis and study of pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). To fit subtle cross-spatiotemporal interactions and learn pathological features from fMRI, we propose a fine-grained spatiotemporal graph neural network with self-supervised learning (SSL) for diagnosis and biomarker extraction of early AD. First, considering the spatiotemporal interaction of the brain, we design two masks that leverage the spatial correlation and temporal repeatability of fMRI. Afterwards, temporal gated i

Degree centrality alterations in different frequency bands in chronic insomnia: A resting-state fMRI study.

PURPOSE: Abnormal spontaneous neural activity in chronic insomnia (CI) has been identified in previous neuroimaging studies. However, whether the spontaneous neural activity is frequency-specific in CI is largely unknown. METHODS: We used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and degree centrality (DC) analysis to examine spontaneous neural activity in 37 CI patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs) across four frequency bands: slow-5 (0.012-0.031 Hz), slow-4 (0.031-0.081 Hz), slow-3 (0.081-0.224 Hz), and slow-2 (0.224-0.25 Hz). Abnormal brain morphology and morphological brain network in adults with acute mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) commonly has long-term cognitive and functional consequences; however, it is not clear whether these adverse outcomes begin in the acute phase of mTBI and are associated with changes in brain morphology and function. METHODS: The current study used T1-weighted MRI to determine whether cortical thickness, gray matter volume (GMV), and morphological brain networks were altered in patients with mTBI within 7 days of injury, and to examine whether these changes were associated with postacute cognitive and emotional abnormalities. Adults aged 18-56 ye

Prevalence, hormonal correlates, severity, and neural basis of neurocognitive impairment in patients with hypothyroidism: Systematic review and meta-analyses.

The aims of this review were to assess the associations between neuropsychological test results and thyroid hormone levels, as well as the imaging abnormalities in the brain associated with hypothyroidism. For this systematic review and meta-analysis, 85 prior studies met the inclusion criteria. Among these studies, the prevalence of neurocognitive impairment assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in hypothyroidism was 0.29 [95% CI:0.26-0.33]. The pooled correlation strength between thyroid-stimulating hormone and the MMSE was r = -0.46 [95% CI:-0.69 to -0.15]. Patients with hy

Long-term cognitive outcomes of Chiari II malformation and corpus callosum abnormalities in myelomeningocele.

BACKGROUND: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a congenital neural tube defect frequently associated with Chiari II malformation and corpus callosum (CC) abnormalities. These structural brain anomalies are suspected to contribute significantly to long-term cognitive impairments, yet their distinct effects remain underexplored. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the literature exploring the relationship between Chiari II malformation, CC abnormalities, and their influence on long-term cognitive outcomes in children and young adults with MMC. Beyond the triad: akinetic mutism in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus, with response to shunt placement. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) typically manifests with the classic Hakim-Adams triad of gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence. While akinetic mutism represents a rare and severe neurological presentation characterized by profound reduction in voluntary movement and speech, its association with iNPH remains underrecognized in clinical practice. This case illustrates both the diagnostic challenges and remarkable therapeutic potential when encountering this unusual manifestation of iNPH. OBSERVATIONS: A previously healthy 52-year-old femal

The evolution of stereotactic radiosurgery for vestibular schwannomas: recent evidence and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors of the vestibular nerve, increasingly detected due to improved and more frequent neuroimaging studies. A summary of the evolution of radiosurgery for VS management is undertaken. METHODS: We broadly review the history and current state of stereotactic radiosurgery in the management of vestibular schwannomas. RESULTS: Management includes observation, microsurgical resection, and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). First used for VS in the late 1960s, SRS achieves > 90% tumor control with safe complication profile. In small VS, early SRS reduce

The Spatial Distribution of Brain Metastasis Is Determined by the Heterogeneity of the Brain Microenvironment.

It is now understood that brain metastases do not occur randomly but have distinct spatial patterns depending on the origin of the cancer. According to the "seed and soil" hypothesis, the final colonization of metastatic cells is the result of their adaptation to the altered environment. To investigate the most favorable microenvironment for brain metastasis, we analyzed neuroimaging data from 177 patients with breast cancer brain metastasis and 548 patients with lung cancer brain metastasis to create a replicable probabilistic map of metastatic locations. Additionally, we used population-base
