The STOP-BANG questionnaire and the risk of perioperative respiratory complications in urgent surgery patients: A prospective, observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The STOP-BANG (SB) questionnaire, a tool originally proposed for identifying patients at risk of obstructive sleep apnoea, may also identify patients at increased risk of perioperative complications (when>3). Perioperative complications, including respiratory ones, are more frequent in emergency surgery. This study aimed at evaluating whether the SB is predictive of perioperative respiratory complications in urgent surgery. METHODS: Consecutive adult patients admitted for an urgent surgery under general anaesthesia were included. The STOP-BANG questionnaire was completed before

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction in older patients with a history of alcohol abuse.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) affects a significant number of patients and may have serious consequences for quality of life. Although POCD is most frequent after cardiac surgery, the prevalence of POCD after noncardiac surgery in older patients is also significant. The risk factors for POCD after noncardiac surgery include advanced age and preexisting cognitive impairment. Self-reported alcohol abuse is a risk factor for postoperative delirium, but its significance for long-term POCD has not been investigated. The goal of this study was to determine whether neurocogni

Pre-surgical identification of the patient at risk for developing venous thromboembolism post-operatively.

The pre-surgery identification of patients at risk for the development of post-operative venous thromboembolism has not yet been achieved. It is a well recognized fact that major surgery without prophylaxis encompasses a high risk for thrombosis, in particular orthopaedic operations (hip/knee surgery approximately 50%) and abdominal surgery (approximately 20%). Other well-defined risk factors, though rarely occurring, are deficiencies of the major inhibitors of blood coagulation (i.e. protein C, protein S and antithrombin III). Less well-defined risk factors are a history of previous thrombosi

Intraperitoneal adhesions after open or laparoscopic abdominal procedure: an experimental study in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Adhesion formation is common after abdominal surgery. The incidence and severity of adhesion formation following open or laparoscopic surgery remain controversial. The role of CO(2) pneumoperitoneum is also widely discussed. This study aimed to compare adhesion formation following peritoneal injury by electrocoagulation performed through open or laparoscopic procedures in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty male rats were randomized to undergo a 1.5-cm peritoneal injury with unipolar cautery under general anesthesia: open surgery (Group A, n=20), laparoscopic surgery with CO

Preoperative transthoracic echocardiogram and delay to geriatric hip fracture surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Delays to surgery confer increased morbidity and mortality in elderly patients who have sustained hip fractures. Preoperative investigations including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) are often requested. The aim of this study was to determine whether there were delays to surgery when these patients underwent preoperative TTE. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched from inception until April 2025. All relevant studies were identified with data extracted and meta-analysed. FINDINGS: A total cohort of 2,581 patients was extracted from 5 studies; 865 (34%) patients receiv
