The new guideline on organized cancer screening programs has been in force in Germany since January 1st, 2020. The guideline has amended earlier recommendations on cytological examinations, which were previously carried out annually during screening. The guidelines-based recommendations on the appropriate follow-up for preinvasive and invasive lesions of the uterine cervix and endometrium are briefly outlined and differentiated from screening cytology and Pap/HPV co-testing as described in the guideline on organized cancer screening programs (oKFE-RL).

Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781-1833) was a 19th century anatomist born into an eminent dynasty. He was a professor of anatomy, pathology, and zoology at the University of Halle, in Central Germany. The diverticulum, a congenital remnant of the vitellointestinal duct was named after him. Other eponyms include Meckel's cartilage, Meckel syndrome, and Meckel-Serres law of recapitulation. His concepts in comparative anatomy, embryology, and teratology anticipated Darwin. This review is a short tribute to this legend and his prolific contributions. LEVEL: Historic review, level V.

We report the presence of Ixodes inopinatus and its sympatric occurrence with Ixodes ricinus in southeastern Germany, western Austria, and Romania. The identification of I. inopinatus was based on morphological and molecular 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA gene features. We also report the finding of Rickettsia monacensis and Rickettsia helvetica in I. inopinatus collected from a fox and a sheep in Romania. Although the vector competence of I. inopinatus for these pathogens remains to be proven, there is evidence of transstadial persistence, an important prerequisite for acting as a vector.

Like many others before him, Nicholas Wade, in a recent publication in this journal, did not provide the correct title of Adolf Fick's dissertation, approved by the University at Marburg, Germany, in 1851, and Wade also wrongly attributed now famous illusion figures, meant to illustrate the so-called horizontal-vertical illusion (the +, the L, and the inverted T), to this author. After having corrected these errors, I briefly relate Fick's work to modern work in the field and note that it has been widely neglected.

Despite limited evidence from the literature surrounding safety or efficacy, butalbital-containing medicines (BCMs) have maintained their rank as "go-to" prescribed migraine and headache relief drugs in the United States, despite bans on these barbiturates in Germany and other European countries. Providers at the Pediatric Headache Program at Boston Children's Hospital recommend that clinicians prescribe triptan-based medications instead of BCMs, given the known negative side effects of BCMs on the general population, and the uncertain longitudinal trajectory of BCMs on developing brains.

Riboflavin/UV cross-linking is a surgical method for stabilizing a progressive form of keratoconus which was developed in Germany and is now used worldwide. The procedure is considered to be safe and rarely results in complications. In this article we report the case of a 40-year-old male patient with a severe infection due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) after uneventful cross-linking in the better eye. Despite intensive local and oral therapy the ulcer did not heal completely and penetrating keratoplasty had to be performed.

During recent years valproate has been established as a cornerstone for the drug-treatment of bipolar disorder. Friedrich-Christian Rosenthal was a prominent German anatomist and surgeon. He was born in Greifswald, Germany on June 3, 1780. In his time, he was best known for his work on the olfactory system and ichthyology. However, his late work also led to his description of the eponymous canal in the cochlea and basal cerebral vein. After an itinerant academic, military, and professional career, he died of tuberculosis in Greifswald on December 5, 1829, working to the end on an unfinished treatise on the anatomy of the brain and cranial nerves.

A resurgence in the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) has occurred in Germany over the past ten years. Along with the classical STD such as syphilis and gonorrhea, new and as yet atypical organisms such as shigella or hepatitis A virus play a role in high-risk patients. We report a case of urethritis caused by H. influenzae Biotype II in an HIV-positive patient. The prevalence of H. influenzae as a relevant pathogen causing urinary tract infections is underestimated because of a lack of selective culture media and no requirements for notification.

Basing on experience in sheep herd health service light is thrown on sheep keeping in Germany concerning protection of sheep against cruelty. Despite there is at the moment no legislative regulation especially on keeping sheep, there exist a number of local and european recommendations. Cruelty and undesirable or avoidable disorders and loads occur in small sheep flocks often due to unawareness of the owner who keeps his sheep as a hobby. In large herds the increasing flock size and the more and more extensive husbandry clash increasingly with the requirements of the sheep.

We report a case of tracheal stenosis in which a migrated Polyflex (Rusch AG, Germany) stent entered the right main bronchus but could not be identified on the chest radiograph. The stent was identified at bronchoscopy and removed under general anaesthesia. Polyflex stents are radiopaque but may not always show up on radiograph. We recommend reliance on clinical symptoms rather than imaging to diagnose migration. If stent migration is suspected then imaging should include thoracic inlet films that incorporate a lateral view.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are resistant to all beta-lactams, and in more than 90% to ciprofloxacin and in 50-60% also to other groups of antibiotics, glycopeptides, quinupristin and linezolid excluded. A special problem is posed by glycopeptide intermediate susceptible S. aureus (GISA) which are until now rate in Germany, By molecular typing epidemic MRSSA can be identified which have a pronounced capacity for intra- and interhospital spread. MRSA are not more but also not less virulent than sensitive S. aureus.

Phytopharmacons are widely used in Germany. Whereas St. John's wort extracts are prescribed for the treatment of mild forms of depression and kava-kava for unspecified anxiety syndromes, hop, balm, lavender, passiflora and valerian are traditionally administered against nervousness and sleep disturbances. Controlled clinical trials are only available for valerian. However, no sleep inducing potential of valerian was observed, only a certain positive effect on daytime mood. Therefore, the mentioned phytopharmacons cannot be recommended for the treatment of sleep disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Alström's disease is a rare hereditary multiple-system illness, whereas a second-messenger defect can be assumed.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case-the first in Germany of 15 known cases in the world literature-, who suffers from all clinical features, such as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, retinitis pigmentosa, pancochlear damage of the ears, hypogonadism, obesity and chronic nephropathy, with the exception of acanthosis nigricans.
CONCLUSION: Because of the multiplicity of affected organs the diagnosis of Alström's disease is difficult.

There is increasing evidence that "anticraving" drugs are promising agents in the treatment of alcoholics. Clinical studies indicate favorable effects of drugs with different pharmacological profiles (e.g., dopaminergic, serotonergic, anti-opioidergic, antiglutamatergic) on abnormal drinking behavior and relapse tendencies. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis is an extremely rare tumor, with only 40 cases previously described in the literature. Treatment consists of inguinal orchiectomy with close-follow up [1]. Asbestose exposure, trauma and hydrocele have been implicated as risk factors. We describe a histopathological examination with the BMA antibody (Behring, Marburg, Germany) and the Lu-5 antibody (Hoffmann-La Roche, Basel, Switzerland).
