2019 IUSTI-Europe guideline for the management of anogenital warts.

This guideline is an update of the 2011 European Guideline for the Management of Anogenital Warts. It is intended to support best practice in the care of patients with anogenital warts by including evidence-based recommendations on diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and advice to patients. It is intended for use by healthcare professionals in sexual healthcare or dermato-venereology clinics in Europe but may be adapted for use in other settings where the management of anogenital warts is undertaken. As a European guideline, recommendations should be adapted according to national circumstances and

Emerging Resistance of Neglected Tropical Diseases: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health threat with the potential to cause millions of deaths. There has been a tremendous increase in the use of antimicrobials, stemming from preventive chemotherapy elimination and control programs addressing neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This study aims to identify the frequency of drug resistance for 11 major NTDs and 20 treatment drugs within a specific period by systematically analyzing the study design, socio-demographic factors, resistance, and countries of relevant studies. Methods: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we p

In-silico study of toxicokinetics and disease association of chemicals present in smokeless tobacco products.

Smokeless tobacco (SLT) products are consumed by millions of people in over 130 countries around the world. Consumption of SLT has been estimated to cause a number of diseases accounting to more than 0.65 million deaths per year. There is sufficient epidemiological evidence on the association of SLT products with nicotine addiction, cancers of oral cavity and digestive systems but there is a lack of understanding of the role of toxic chemicals in these diseases. We provide the first comprehensive in-silico analysis of chemical compounds present in different SLT products used worldwide. Many of

Frequency, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Salmonella in small poultry flocks in California.

Backyard poultry operations are increasingly popular and commonplace in both rural and suburban locations. Although Salmonella surveillance programs are well established for large commercial poultry systems, information on smaller operations is lacking. We identified the occurrence and serotype distribution of Salmonella spp. recovered from backyard flock cases submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (Davis, CA) in 2012-2015, and evaluated minimum inhibitory concentration for 12 antimicrobials as well as the lesions associated with Salmonella spp. in these c

Approach to offering remote support to mesothelioma patients: the mesothelioma survivor project.

BACKGROUND: From the moment of diagnosis, malignant mesothelioma (MM) decreases health-related quality of life (QOL) in patients and their caregivers. In addition to symptoms of disease, aggressive treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can cause extreme side effects-chemotherapy specifically is associated with chronic fatigue, unremitting nausea, vomiting, and systemic pain. These side effects of treatments can be burdensome enough to lead to noncompliance or outright refusal of continuation of care. METHODS: The platform for the support group was remote, consisting of onlin

Developing a framework for assessing chemical respiratory sensitization: A workshop report.

Respiratory tract sensitization can have significant acute and chronic health implications. While induction of respiratory sensitization is widely recognized for some chemicals, validated standard methods or frameworks for identifying and characterizing the hazard are not available. A workshop on assessment of respiratory sensitization was held to discuss the current state of science for identification and characterization of respiratory sensitizer hazard, identify information facilitating development of validated standard methods and frameworks, and consider the regulatory and practical risk

The Elusive Goal of Drug-Free Prisons.

BACKGROUND: Although there is a need for well-designed evaluations, international evidence shows that drugs frequently enter prisons and enforcement efforts are said to be linked to adverse events. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine drug enforcement within a federal prison system, overseen by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), and to detail competing perspectives. METHODS: Three main sources of data were used in this qualitative study: 16 interviews conducted between 2010 and 2012 with former CSC senior officials, former frontline staff, and external stakeholders; CSC research p

Mapping malaria in municipalities of the Coffee Triangle region of Colombia using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been used extensively for the development of epidemiological maps of malaria but not in the Coffee Triangle region of Colombia, endemic for P. vivax, P. falciparum and P. malariae. Surveillance case data (2007-2011) were used to estimate annual incidence rates per Plasmodium spp. (cases/100,000 pop) to develop the first malaria maps in the 53 municipalities of this region (departments Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda). The GIS software used was Kosmo Desktop 3.0RC1(®). Thirty thematic maps were developed according to the municipalities, years, parasite eti

Enhanced surveillance of hepatitis B in the EU, 2006-2012.

Robust epidemiological information on hepatitis B is important to help countries plan prevention and control programmes and evaluate public health responses to control transmission. European Centre Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) introduced enhanced surveillance of hepatitis B at EU/EEA level in 2011 to collate routine surveillance data from national notification systems. Analysis of the data collected for the years 2006-2012 shows a high burden of hepatitis B across Europe with 110 005 cases reported over the period with the majority of these cases being chronic infections. The most com

Virus detection in questing ticks is not a sensitive indicator for risk assessment of tick-borne encephalitis in humans.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the most important tick-transmitted arbovirus causing human disease in Europe, but information on its endemic occurrence varies between countries because of differences in surveillance systems. Objective data are necessary to ascertain the disease risk for vaccination recommendations and other public health interventions. In two independent, separately planned projects, we used real-time RT-PCR to detect TBE virus in questing ticks. In Poland, 32 sampling sites were selected in 10 administrative districts located in regions where sporadic TBE cases were

Dental pathology in dolphins (Cetacea: Delphinidae) from the southern coast of Brazil.

Pathological processes observed in the stomatognathic systems of mammalian species are a useful source of information about the habits, evolution and general health of such animals. Studies of pathological conditions on teeth are common in humans and other primates, but rare in wild animals in general and marine mammals in particular. For cetaceans, previous studies provided scanty records of dental anomalies in a few species. This is the first broad and systematic inventory of dental pathology in dolphins. Specimens stored at scientific collections from the southern coast of Brazil were visua

The neighbourhood effects of geographical access to tobacco retailers on individual smoking behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether neighbourhood measures of geographical accessibility to outlets selling tobacco (supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations) are associated with individual smoking behaviour in New Zealand. METHODS: Using geographical information systems, travel times from the population-weighted centroid of each neighbourhood to the closest outlet selling tobacco were calculated for all 38,350 neighbourhoods across New Zealand. These measures were appended to the 2002/03 New Zealand Health Survey, a national survey of 12, 529 adults. Two-level logistic regression m

Indigenous knowledge systems and pandemic health resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) have played important roles in community-based health responses across the Global South, yet they remain marginalized in formal health policy during global health crises. This study examined how IKS were mobilized to support respiratory and immune health during the COVID-19 pandemic across BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory research design was employed across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and China involving 38 participants. Data were colle

Precision Prevention of Premature Cardiovascular Disease Among African Men: The Triple-Risk Convergence Framework Integrating Psychosocial, Metabolic, and Inherited Cardiovascular Susceptibility.

Premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) among African men is an escalating public health and health systems challenge across sub-Saharan Africa. Rapid urbanisation, psychosocial stress, cardiometabolic transition, and inherited cardiovascular susceptibility converge within contexts characterised by delayed healthcare engagement and fragmented preventive infrastructure. Current prevention strategies remain largely centred on metabolic risk factors and may inadequately capture the multidimensional nature of cardiovascular vulnerability. The objective of this conceptual paper is to develop and pre

Structural stigma and its impact on healthcare for consumers with borderline personality disorder: protocol for a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Structural stigma in health systems experienced by consumers diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a widespread phenomenon that causes major health inequities and harm for this population. Structural stigma in this context relates to institutional policies, cultural norms, and organizational practices that limit consumers' access to health services, quality of care, and capacity to achieve optimal health and well-being. BPD is a serious mental illness with high morbidity and mortality, characterized by instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and em

Challenges to and opportunities for the adoption and routine use of early warning indicators to monitor pediatric HIV drug resistance in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), loss to follow-up, and HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) are challenges to achieving UNAIDS' targets of 90% of those diagnosed HIV-positive receiving treatment, and 90% of those receiving treatment achieving viral suppression. In Kenya, the pediatric population represents 8% of total HIV infections and pediatric virological failure is estimated at 33%. The monitoring of early warning indicators (EWIs) for HIVDR can help to identify and correct gaps in ART program functioning to improve HIV care and treatment outcomes. However, EWIs

Reframing trauma recovery for public health: introducing the recovery assemblage framework.

Psychological trauma represents a major global health challenge, with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contributing to long-term difficulties in mental and physical health, relationships, and wellbeing. Despite this, dominant models of trauma recovery are largely grounded in biomedical and individualized paradigms, and prioritize linear pathways focused on symptom reduction and therapeutic outcomes. Such approaches risk locating responsibility for recovery within the individual, overlooking the broader social, relational, and structural conditions that shape how recovery is understood and

Health and tuberculosis systems resilience, the role of the private sector and pandemic preparedness: insights from a cross-country qualitative study with policy-makers in India, Indonesia and Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented challenge to health systems worldwide and had a severe impact on tuberculosis (TB) case notifications and service delivery. India, Indonesia and Nigeria are high TB-burden countries where the majority of initial care-seeking happens in the private health sector. The objectives of this study were to (1) explore policy-makers' perspectives on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on private sector TB service delivery in India, Indonesia and Nigeria and (2) identify cross-cutting insights for pandemic preparedness with respect to TB service d
