Antimicrobial peptides in chronic anal fistula epithelium.

OBJECTIVE: Anal fistulas are the result of chronic infection of an intersphincteric gland. Despite the passage through mesenchymal tissue, fistulas seldom lead to systemic infection. Antimicrobial peptides are secreted by a variety of epithelia, belonging to the innate immune system and are potential factors contributing to infection control. The aim of this study was to investigate whether epithelium is present in the fistulas and what the origin might be. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-seven chronic anal fistulas from patients, excluding Crohn's disease, were compared with healthy rectal and p…

On the increase of portal pressure during the acute and chronic phases of murine schistosomiasis mansoni and its reversibility after treatment with oxamniquine.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with oxamniquine on the portal pressure of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The animals were infected with 30 cercariae and portal pressure was measured with a polygraph at 70 (acute phase) and 160 (chronic phase) days after infection. On days 70 and 160 two other groups of infected mice were treated with 400 mg/kg of oxamniquine and portal pressure was measured 90 days later (160 and 250 days after infection). A group of uninfected mice was used as control. The measured portal pressures, in mmHg, were: matched uni

The influence of dietary protein on some blood biochemical parameters in Scottish blackface sheep experimentally infected with Trypanosoma congolense.

The present study investigated the influence of dietary protein on some blood biochemical parameters, namely lipids, proteins, iron, glucose and B-hydroxybutyrate, in Scottish Blackface sheep infected with Trypanosoma congolense, and given either a low protein (51.5 g digestible crude protein per day) or a high protein (116 g digestible crude protein per day) diet. Both low and high protein diets were isocaloric and animals were monitored for 10 weeks after infection. It was observed that infection was associated with marked reduction in the concentrations of plasma total lipids, cholesterol,

Acute hepatitis C: clinical aspects, diagnosis, and outcome of acute HCV infection.

Acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is often a clinically silent infection, and is therefore rarely detected. A high index of clinical suspicion in addition to careful serological and virological assessment is required to identify the disease, and to determine the eventual clinical outcome after primary infection; the minority of acutely infected individuals spontaneously control viremia in long term whilst the majority become persistently infected. Here, we describe the clinical presentation of acute HCV infection and the patterns of viremia and liver alanine transaminase levels (ALT) obs

Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with haemophilia in Poland: prevalence and risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Infection with Helicobacter pylori is the main aetiological factor for erosive gastritis and duodenal or gastric peptic ulcers often complicated with life-threatening bleeding in patients with coagulation disorders. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in haemophilia patients, and to assess the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding associated with this infection. From 2000 to 2002, 146 patients with haemophilia (129, haemophilia A; 13, haemophilia B), mean age, 39.9 years (+/-7.3), were investigated for H. pylori infection using IgG and

Identifying Infants at Low Risk for Neonatal Herpes Simplex Virus Infection.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is rare but associated with high rates of morbidity. Recent guidelines recommend considering HSV in infants ≤21 days of age presenting for sepsis evaluations with certain risk factors. However, limited data exist on the value of these risk factors in stratifying the risk for neonatal HSV infection. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of infants ≤42 days of age who presented between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2023 for sepsis evaluations to identify infants at low risk for neonatal HSV infection. We used Firth

Optimal control strategies supported by system dynamics modelling: a study on hookworm disease in China.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm disease remains a global health issue. In China, it persists with a 0.67% infection rate and uneven distribution in 2021. Optimized control strategies are needed. This study aims to optimize intervention strategies for hookworm disease in China. METHODS: Structural analysis and parameter estimation were conducted using system dynamics theory. Key variables were identified via the Delphi method, leading to the creation of a causal loop diagram (CLD) and stock flow chart (SFC). Based on the SFC, parameter estimation and quantitative relationships were established and the mo

Matrine exhibits antiviral activity in a PRRSV/PCV2 co-infected mouse model.

BACKGROUND: PRRSV and PCV2 co-infection is very common in swine industry which results in huge economic losses worldwide. Although vaccination is used to prevent viral diseases, immunosuppression induced by PRRSV and PCV2 leads to vaccine failure. PURPOSE: Our previous results have demonstrated that Matrine possess antiviral activities against PRRSV/PCV2 co-infection in vitro. This study aims to establish a PRRSV/PCV2 co-infected KM mouse model and evaluate the antiviral activities of Matrine against PRRSV/PCV2 co-infection. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 144 KM mice were randomly divided into six

Drosophila melanogaster Limostatin and Its Human Ortholog Promote West Nile Virus Infection.

The arbovirus West Nile virus (WNV) is a danger to global health. Spread primarily by mosquitoes, WNV causes about 2000 cases per year in the United States. The natural mosquito immune response controls viral replication so that the host survives but can still transmit the virus. Using the genetically malleable Drosophila melanogaster model, we previously dissected innate immune pathways used to control WNV infection. Specifically, we showed that insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS) activates a JAK/STAT-mediated immune response that reduces WNV. However, how factors that regulate IIS in insects contr

Diagnosis of Legionnaires' Disease Assisted by Next-Generation Sequencing in a Patient with COVID-19.

Coinfection in COVID-19 patients is associated with worsening outcome. Among patients with COVID-19, Legionella pneumophila, a common cause of pneumonia, has been reported as a co-occurring respiratory infection. A nonspecific clinical presentation, however, makes an early diagnosis difficult. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was collected from a patient suffering from COVID-19 and presenting with pneumonia and sent for metagenomic analysis. Differential abundance analysis was carried out by comparing each taxon reads per million between the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid sample and the negative con

Association Between Helicobacter pylori Infection and Serum Iron Profile.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is reported to be the most frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in cases of upper gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. There is paucity of research between the possible association of H. pylori and iron stores and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In this study, we will determine if there is an association between serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), serum iron and ferritin levels, and H. pylori infection. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in the gastroenterology ward of a major hospital in Pakistan from December 2020 to Ap

Antioxidant defense in the eyes of immunocompetent and immunosuppressed mice infected with Acanthamoeba spp.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba spp. are ubiquitous pathogens which cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis and disseminated infection. Moreover, Acanthamoeba spp. infection of the cornea leads to Acanthamoeba keratitis. Our previous study showed that the infection of an eyeball may also take place via the migration of trophozoites through the optic nerve from the brain to the eyes. The aim of the study was to analyze the activity of enzymatic antioxidants and the concentration of non-enzymatic antioxidant in the eyes of immunocompetent and immunocompromised mice with disseminated acanthamoebiasis.

Recombinant Toxoplasma gondii phosphoglycerate mutase 2 confers protective immunity against toxoplasmosis in BALB/c mice.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most widespread zoonoses worldwide. It has a high incidence and can result in severe disease in humans and livestock. Effective vaccines are needed to limit and prevent infection with Toxoplasma gondii. In this study, we evaluated the immuno-protective efficacy of a recombinant Toxoplasma gondii phosphoglycerate mutase 2 (rTgPGAM 2) against T. gondii infection in BALB/c mice. We report that the mice nasally immunised with rTgPGAM 2 displayed significantly higher levels of special IgG antibodies against rTgPGAM 2 (including IgG1, IgG2a and IgAs) and cytokines (includ
