Entomological impact of three years of clothianidin-based indoor residual spraying in two high malaria endemic districts in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) represents a major malaria vector control strategy to reduce malaria burden. The first major IRS campaign for malaria control in Côte d'Ivoire was implemented by the US Presidents Malaria Initiative in two malaria endemic districts between 2020 and 2022. This study report on the effect of clothianidin-based IRS on key entomological indices of malaria transmission in the IRS districts following three rounds of IRS with clothianidin-based insecticide formulations. METHODS: Pre- and post-IRS adult mosquito collections were conducted monthly in two IRS d

Smartcard: an integrated approach for contaminant monitoring, from field to laboratory.

Effective food safety monitoring requires a multi-step approach from farm to fork, involving different methods, ranging from convenient screening devices to sophisticated laboratory confirmatory testing. However, sample transportation to routine laboratories is time-consuming and expensive. Simplified on-site sampling followed by laboratory analysis offers a potential solution. Dried blood spot (DBS) cards ensure stability and ease of sample transportation and are used in clinical testing. However, the applicability of such an approach could be broader and include the storage of dried extract

Mosquitocidal Susceptibility and Non-Target Effects of Tricholoma equestre Mushroom (Agaricomycetes) on the Immature Stages of Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus.

The worldwide scientific community is well aware that mosquitoes are the sole agents responsible for transmitting various dreadful diseases and critical illnesses caused by vector-borne pathogens. The primary objective of this current research was to evaluate the effectiveness of methanol extract from Tricholoma equestre mushroom in controlling the early life stages of Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Anopheles stephensi Liston, and Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus in Hasselquist) mosquitoes. The larvae, pupae and eggs of these mosquitoes were exposed to four different concentrations (62.5 to 500 ppm). Afte

Developmental effects of fenpropathrin on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo-larvae: Toxic endpoints and potential mechanism.

Fenpropathrin (FEN), a highly efficient and broad-spectrum synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. Although sufficient concern has been given to the negative impacts of FEN on non-target organisms, limited knowledge exists regarding the developmental effects of FEN. In this study, effects of FEN (0.45, 1.35, 4.05, and 12.15 μg/L) on various early life-stage endpoints of zebrafish were investigated from 3 to 144 h post-fertilization (hpf) in order to disclose the developmental effects and underlying mechanisms caused by FEN. The results indicate that exposure to FEN induced developmental toxicity in

Lysosomal disruption, mitochondrial impairment, histopathological and oxidative stress in rat's nervous system after exposure to a neonicotinoid (imidacloprid).

Imidacloprid (IMI), a neonicotinoid pesticide, has been widely used due to its high efficiency against insect pests. However, its prolonged exposure may pose significant risks to non-target organisms, including mammals. Recent studies have raised concerns about its potential neurotoxicity, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the neurotoxic effects of chronic Imidacloprid exposure in Wistar rats, focusing on oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and lysosomal disruption. Wistar rats were orally administered two doses of Imidacloprid (5 mg/kg

Resurgence of Malaria Transmission and Incidence after Withdrawal of Indoor Residual Spraying in the District of Koulikoro, Mali.

In Mali, malaria vector control relies mostly on long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying (IRS). From 2008 to 2016, an IRS program was implemented in the district of Koulikoro. After a significant reduction in malaria indicators, IRS was stopped in 2016. This study evaluated the effect of IRS withdrawal on entomological parameters of malaria transmission and incidence in children aged 6 months to 10 years in the district of Koulikoro. Entomological parameters of malaria transmission during the last year of IRS implementation in 2016 were compared with those obtained 2 years

A novel acetylcholinesterase inhibition based colorimetric biosensor for the detection of paraoxon ethyl using CUPRAC reagent as chromogenic oxidant.

A novel colorimetric biosensor for the sensitive and selective detection of an organophosphate pesticide, paraoxon ethyl (POE), was developed based on its inhibitory effect on the acetylcholine esterase (AChE) enzyme. The bis-neocuproine copper (II) complex ([Cu(Nc)2]2+) known as the CUPRAC reagent, was used as a chromogenic oxidant in the AChE inhibition-based biosensors for the first time. To initiate the biosensor, an enzymatic reaction takes place between AChE and its substrate acetylthiocholine (ATCh). Then, enzymatically produced thiocholine (TCh) reacts with the light blue [Cu(Nc)2]2+ c

Validation of quantitative real-time PCR reference genes and spatial expression profiles of detoxication-related genes under pesticide induction in honey bee, Apis mellifera.

Recently, pesticides have been suggested to be one of the factors responsible for the large-scale decline in honey bee populations, including colony collapse disorder. The identification of the genes that respond to pesticide exposure based on their expression is essential for understanding the xenobiotic detoxification metabolism in honey bees. For the accurate determination of target gene expression by quantitative real-time PCR, the expression stability of reference genes should be validated in honey bees exposed to various pesticides. Therefore, in this study, to select the optimal referen

[Treatment of scabies].

Scabies affects more than 200 million people around the world, and causes a significant socioeconomic impact. Prolonged skin-to-skin contact is the primary mode of transmission. Fomite-mediated transmission is uncommon, although it can be significant in crusted scabies. Topical therapy with permethrin 5% is recommended as first-line treatment. It can be indicated during pregnancy and lactation, and appears to be safe in children <2 months. However, a decrease in the effectiveness of this drug has recently been reported. Another first-line therapeutic alternative is oral ivermectin. It can be a

Reduced proinsecticide activation by cytochrome P450 confers coumaphos resistance in the major bee parasite Varroa destructor.

Varroa destructor is one of the main problems in modern beekeeping. Highly selective acaricides with low toxicity to bees are used internationally to control this mite. One of the key acaricides is the organophosphorus (OP) proinsecticide coumaphos, that becomes toxic after enzymatic activation inside Varroa We show here that mites from the island Andros (AN-CR) exhibit high levels of coumaphos resistance. Resistance is not mediated by decreased coumaphos uptake, target-site resistance, or increased detoxification. Reduced proinsecticide activation by a cytochrome P450 enzyme was the main resi

Effectiveness and tolerability of a squalane and dimethicone-based treatment for head lice.

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are worldwide obligate human ectoparasites, with high implications in pediatrics. In Europe, first-line topical neurotoxic insecticidal therapeutic strategies are being replaced by topical physically acting agents as the first-choice treatment. Safety of the active ingredients and high efficacy in a one-time single-dose treatment with a brief treatment application time are key issues for consumer use and effective compliance. The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro efficacy of a newly developed squalane and dimethicone-based pediculicidal formula,
