The role of elective neck dissection in parotid acinic cell carcinoma: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) is a rare parotid malignancy treated by parotidectomy with or without a neck dissection depending on clinical or radiographic neck node involvement. The role of elective neck dissection (END) in the clinically node-negative neck, intended to address occult lymph node metastases (OLNM), remains contentious. METHODS: This review was conducted per PRISMA 2020. Searches through PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL were conducted up to May 2025. Data extraction focused on survival, recurrence outcomes and OLNM. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale

New Updates in Diagnostic Imaging and Treatment of Rectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common tumour in men and the second most common in women. It ranks as the third leading cause of new cancer cases and cancer-related deaths in both sexes. Due to differences in embryonic origin, rectal cancer (RC) is considered a distinct entity from colon cancer in terms of staging and treatment. Mortality rates in more developed countries are decreasing, largely due to increased screening and advances in the staging and treatment of rectal cancer. Current screening methods include faecal occult blood testing (FOBT) and rectosigmoidoscopy. For staging

Association of tumor microbiome with survival in resected early-stage PDAC.

The pancreas tumor microbiota may influence tumor microenvironment and influence survival in early-stage pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); however, current studies are limited and small. We investigated the relationship of tumor microbiota to survival in 201 surgically resected patients with localized PDAC (Stages I-II), from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) cohorts. We characterized the tumor microbiome using RNA-sequencing data. We examined the association of the tumor microbiome with overall survival (OS), via meta-analysis with the Cox

Historical evolution and current research status of lymph node staging in gastric cancer: a review.

Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is an independent prognostic factor for patients with gastric cancer (GC), and an accurate lymph node (LN) staging system is crucial for guiding adjuvant therapy and assessing patient prognosis. The most commonly used staging systems for GC are the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) system developed by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), as well as the Japanese classification system. The N staging system in both classification methods has undergone multiple revisions and improvements. Early versions classifie

Development of a nomogram for the prediction of postoperative survival in hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach.

This study developed a prognostic nomogram for hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach (HAS) using clinicopathological data from 61 surgically treated patients (First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, 2013-2025) and externally validated it with 20 cases from Henan Cancer Hospital. Multivariate Cox regression identified TNM stage, CA125, Ki67, and primary tumor location as independent predictors of overall survival (OS). These factors were integrated into a nomogram and internally validated via bootstrap resampling. Compared to the TNM staging system, the nomogram demonstrated superio

Multimodal machine learning for staging laparoscopy: a combined image analysis and morphologic tool for the discrimination of peritoneal metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Staging laparoscopy (SL) is an essential procedure for peritoneal metastasis (PM) detection. Although surgeons are expected to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions intraoperatively, this task remains difficult and error-prone. The aim of this study was to develop a novel multimodal machine learning (MML) model to differentiate PM from benign lesions by integrating morphologic characteristics with intraoperative SL images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Deep learning (DL) models were trained to classify peritoneal lesions in video frames of patients undergoing SL for suspecte

[Overall survival, organ preservation, function preservation: the role of surgery in the treatment of laryngeal cancer].

The prognosis of early stage laryngeal carcinoma treated with radiation therapy or surgery (preferably transoral resection) is favorable. In these cases, the choice of the therapy is mainly driven by functional outcomes (speech, swallowing and respiratory function). However, there has not been any substantial improvement in the treatment of locoregionally advanced larynx cancer. The selection of the most ideal therapy is difficult, as upfront total laryngectomy is rather radical, and has a dramatic effect on quality of life, whereas reliable predictors of radiosensitivity are lacking. Moreover

Paravertebral and Brachial Plexus Neurolysis as Analgesic Tools in Stage IV Breast Cancer: A Case Report.

Chemical neurolysis of the brachial plexus and paravertebral space have been sparsely reported. This case involves a patient with refractory pain from stage IV breast cancer, characterized by severe discomfort in the right axilla, shoulder, and pectoral region. A diagnostic block with local anesthetics at T2 and T4 paravertebral spaces and interscalene brachial plexus provided 80% pain relief for 12 hours. Subsequent phenol neurolysis at the same sites achieved 70% sustained pain relief and reduced opioid use for 4 weeks. Chemical neurolysis remains a critical tool in the palliative care arsen

[Role of prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PSMA-PET/CT) in staging].

The superiority of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) over conventional staging methods such as computed tomography (CT) and bone scintigraphy has now been demonstrated for almost all clinical stages of prostate cancer. In primary diagnostics, PSMA-PET/CT is therefore the new standard for risk-adapted whole-body staging. At the same time, PSMA-PET/CT provides a new risk-based classification for predicting overall survival across all early and late stages of the disease. However, the clinical implications of this information are not yet fully understood

[Functional Outcome of Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and Surgery in the Treatment of Rectal Cancer].

Treatment of rectal cancer is multimodal and based on tumour stage and location, as well as morphological and biological risk factors - using surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. In a large number of cases, there are several treatment options, some of which can cause similar and some of which can cause different functional limitations. Comparisons of functional outcomes between different treatment modalities are currently limited. This narrative review presents the functional outcomes of different treatment strategies for middle and lower third rectal cancer, as based on a literature search

Analysis of surgical margins in breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The quality and completeness of surgery remains critical for optimal oncological outcomes in breast cancer. A key indicator of surgical completeness is the resection margin status, which should ideally be negative, indicated by no ink on invasive tumor. However, such data is rarely reported from sub-Saharan Africa. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of women with non-metastatic breast cancer who underwent a mastectomy, and identify the factors influencing the resection margin status at a cancer hospital in Tanzania. METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective cohor
