Scrotal Wall Metastasis from Adenocarcinoma of Unknown Origin, with Concurrent Extramammary Paget's Disease - a Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Scrotal cancer is a very rare disease, with the most common subtype being squamous cell carcinoma. Metastatic carcinoma to the scrotal wall is very rare. A histological finding of adenocarcinoma in a scrotal malignancy invariably suggests a metastasis from another primary cancer. We describe an enigmatic case of metastatic adenocarcinoma to the scrotum managed as metastatic adenocarcinoma of unknown origin. Attempts to identify a primary cancer were complicated by ambiguous diagnostic results. This is the first case in literature of metastatic cancer to the scrotum from an adenoc

Temporal increase in the incidence of anal squamous cell carcinoma in Kentucky and factors associated with adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Anal squamous cell cancer (ASCC) incidence in Kentucky is increasing at an alarming rate. In 2009, the incidence surpassed the US national average (2.66 vs. 1.77/100,000 people), and currently, Kentucky ranks second by state per capita. The reasons for this rise are unclear. We hypothesize individuals with ASCC in Kentucky have some unique risk factors associated with worse outcomes. METHODS: Individuals with ASCC in a population-level state database (1995-2016), as well as those treated at two urban university-affiliated tertiary care centers (2011-2018), were included and analyz

Esophagus cancer and essential trace elements.

Numerous epidemiological and laboratory studies on essential trace elements have reported protective associations in developing various cancer types, including esophagus cancer (EC). However, the results are not always consistent. Some essential trace elements could play a vital role in preventing esophagus cancer. Some showed no association with esophageal cancer risk, while others harmed individuals. This article reviews the association between the intake or supplementation of essential trace elements (especially zinc, copper, iron, and selenium) and the risk of esophageal cancer. Generally,

Identification of tissue-specific microbial profile of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma by full-length 16S rDNA sequencing.

It was previously believed that the microbial community in the esophagus was relatively stable, but it has been reported that different esophageal diseases have different microbial community characteristics. In this study, we recruited patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and collected 51 pairs of tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissues for full-length 16S rDNAsequencing and qPCR to compare the differences in microbial community structure. The results of sequencing in 19 pairs of tissues showed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Deinococcus-Thermus, and Actinobacte

Study protocol for artificial intelligence-assisted sponge cytology as pre-endoscopy screening for early esophegeal squmaous epithelial lesions in China.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic screening is the widely accepted screening strategy for esophageal squmaous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, massive endoscopic screening is expensive and not cost-efficient, and novel pre-endoscopy detection used as a preliminary screening method arouses new concerns. We are planning to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) assisted sponge cytology for detecting esophageal squmaous high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN) and above lesions. The aim of this trail is to investigate the efficiency of AI-assisted sponge cytology in population-based screening of early eso

[A Case of Tongue Carcinoma with Malignant Transformation Caused by the Pandemic].

In April 2020, a state of emergency was declared because of the pandemic, and the public was instructed to refrain from leaving their homes. Consequently, this stirred up anxiety about visiting medical institutions. Here, we describe a case of tongue carcinoma that developed from an oral precancerous lesion into a malignant transformation owing to the effects of refraining from medical examinations caused by the pandemic. The patient was a 62-year-old woman. In March 2020, the patient became aware of a mass at the tongue's margin and was referred to our department. An excisional biopsy was per

Chemoradiation vs. local excision in the management of early squamous cell carcinoma of the anus: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) suffers a constant increase each year in the last decades. Recent studies suggested the possibility of local excision (LE) as an option for early-stage SCAC patients. This systematic review aims to summarize the available evidence on the comparison of LE vs. chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in the treatment of early SCCA patients. METHODS: We conducted a literature review including MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, clinicaltrials.gov, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews through June 2022. MOOSE guidelines were followed. We used the methodol

Targeted deep sequencing reveals genomic alterations of actinic keratosis/cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in situ and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

Actinic keratosis (AK) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in situ (CIS) are two of the most common precursors of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). However, the genomic landscape of AK/CIS and the drivers of cSCC progression remain to be elucidated. The aim of our study was to investigate the genomic alterations between AK/CIS and cSCC in terms of somatic mutations and copy number alterations (CNAs). We performed targeted deep sequencing of 160 cancer-related genes with a median coverage of 515× for AK (N = 9), CIS (N = 9), cSCC lesions (N = 13), and matched germline controls from 17

The potential of gene therapy for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) encompasses a heterogeneous group of inherited skin fragility disorders, with mutations in genes encoding the basement membrane zone (BMZ) proteins that normally ensure dermal-epidermal integrity. Of the four main EB types, recessive dystrophic EB (RDEB), especially the severe variant, represents one of the most debilitating clinical entities, with recurrent mucocutaneous blistering and ulceration leading to chronic wounds, infections, inflammation, scarring and ultimately cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, which leads to premature death. Improved understanding of th

Immune checkpoint analysis in lip cancer.

The aim of this study was to establish whether PD-L1, PD-1, and markers of the tumor microenvironment (CD4, CD8, FOXP3) could have a prognostic value in squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (LSCC). In patients with histologically proven LSCC, tumor specimens were stained using immunohistochemistry (for PD-1, PD-L1, CD4, CD8, and FOXP3) on paraffin-embedded tissues. Patients with (N+) and without (N-) nodal metastasis were stratified and matched to each other according to prognostically relevant clinicopathological parameters. 58 patients (29 N+ and 29 N-) were included. PD-L1 expression was posi

Feasibility study of ultrasound-guided resection of tongue cancer with immediate specimen examination to improve margin control - Comparison with conventional treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (SCCT) is preferably treated by surgery. Free resection margins (≥5 mm) provide local control and disease-free survival. However, close (1-5 mm) and positive margins (<1 mm) are frequently encountered. We present our first experience of in-vivo ultrasound (US) guided SCCT resections followed by ex-vivo US control on the resection specimen to obtain free margins. We compare the results with those from a hisorical cohort of 91 conventionally treated SCCT patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with SCCT were included in a consecutive US-co
