Cross-network coupling of neural oscillations in the dynamic pain connectome reflects chronic neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis.

Sensory perceptions are coded by complex neural dynamics of regional communication in the brain. Thus, sensory abnormalities such as chronic pain may occur when neural dynamics go awry. Previous studies of cross-network dynamic functional connectivity in chronic pain identified abnormalities but were based on functional MRI which only captures slow temporal features. Here we conducted a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study to investigate fine temporal dynamics of aberrant cross-regional and cross-network communication of the dynamic pain connectome in patients with chronic pain. We also introduc

Incidental positive emotion modulates neural response to outcome valence in a monetarily rewarded gambling task.

Choices are influenced by incidental emotions. To understand the neural mechanisms underlying the potential effects of incidental emotions on outcome processing, we conducted two experiments measuring feedback-related negativity (FRN) as a function of outcome (gain and loss) and emotional context. Experiment 1 used happy, neutral, and sad faces. Experiment 2 used pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant emotional scenes. We expected that incidental emotions would influence outcome processing at the behavioral level in line with the cognitive themes associated with each emotion. At a neural level, the

Effects of BDNF Val66Met polymorphisms on brain structures and behaviors in adolescents with conduct disorder.

Accumulating evidence suggests that neural abnormalities in conduct disorder (CD) may be subject to genetic influences, but few imaging studies have taken genetic variants into consideration. The Val66Met polymorphism of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has emerged as a high-interest genetic variant due to its importance in cortical maturation, and several studies have implicated its involvement in neurodevelopmental disorders. Thus, it is unclear how this polymorphism may influence brain anatomy and aberrant behaviors in CD. A total of 65 male adolescents with CD and 69 gender-, IQ- a

Automated Analysis for Retinopathy of Prematurity by Deep Neural Networks.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vasproliferative disorder disease principally observed in infants born prematurely with low birth weight. ROP is an important cause of childhood blindness. Although automatic or semi-automatic diagnosis of ROP has been conducted, most previous studies have focused on "plus" disease, which is indicated by abnormalities of retinal vasculature. Few studies have reported methods for identifying the "stage" of the ROP disease. Deep neural networks have achieved impressive results in many computer vision and medical image analysis problems, raising expec

[Prenatal diagnosis of neural tube defects: Correlation between prenatal and postnatal data].

OBJECTIVES: Neural tube defects (NTD) are congenital anomalies that can cause significant neurological long-term disabilities. Theses malformations are accessible to prenatal diagnosis and quite recently, to in utero repair for some myelomeningoceles. The aim of this study was to analyse the correlation between prenatal and postnatal examinations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive retrospective monocentric study has been conducted between January 2004 and December 2014 in a tertiary care maternity. All patients who benefited a prenatal diagnosis of NTD for their foetus, and for whom postna

Effects of behavioral activation on default mode network connectivity in subthreshold depression: A preliminary resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Subthreshold depression is a risk factor for major depressive disorder, and it is known to have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL). Although behavioral activation, which is one type of cognitive behavioral therapy, is an effective psychological intervention for subthreshold depression, neural mechanisms of behavioral activation are unclear. Enhanced functional connectivity between default mode network (DMN) and the other regions has been demonstrated in participants with subthreshold depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of behavioral activation o

Autonomic and brain responses associated with empathy deficits in autism spectrum disorder.

Accumulating evidence suggests that autonomic signals and their cortical representations are closely linked to emotional processes, and that related abnormalities could lead to social deficits. Although socio-emotional impairments are a defining feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), empirical evidence directly supporting the link between autonomic, cortical, and socio-emotional abnormalities in ASD is still lacking. In this study, we examined autonomic arousal indexed by skin conductance responses (SCR), concurrent cortical responses measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging, and

[Face recognition in patients with autism spectrum disorders].

The present study aimed to review previous research conducted on face recognition in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Face recognition is a key question in the ASD research field because it can provide clues for elucidating the neural substrates responsible for the social impairment of these patients. Historically, behavioral studies have reported low performance and/or unique strategies of face recognition among ASD patients. However, the performance and strategy of ASD patients is comparable to those of the control group, depending on the experimental situation or developmental

Nutrigenetic determinants of neural tube defects in India.

JUSTIFICATION: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the commonest birth defects with a high incidence in India. However, few studies have systematically looked into the etio-pathogeneis of NTDs, which mainly includes nutritional deficiencies and genetic predisposition. Efforts are afoot for universal food fortification with folic acid in the hope of preventing NTDs, without factual evidence of folate deficiency in the target population. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We conducted a review of Indian literature on NTDs focusing on the role of folate and vitamin B12 nutrition and common genetic polymorp

Impairment of coronary microvascular function in patients with neurally mediated syncope.

Recent evidence suggests that myocardial ischemia may occur in patients with neurally mediated syncope and normal coronary angiograms. This study was conducted to evaluate if coronary microvascular function is impaired in such patients. Coronary hemodynamic studies and head-up tilt table tests (HUTs) were performed on 30 consecutive patients with normal coronary angiograms and recurrent syncope. Another ten subjects with atypical chest pain and no evidence of myocardial ischemia or syncope served as a control. Great cardiac vein flow (GCVF) and coronary sinus flow (CSF) were measured by the th

Case-control study of periconceptional folic acid supplementation and oral clefts.

There is consistent evidence that the risk of neural tube defects is decreased by periconceptional supplementation with folic acid. A similar protective effect has been postulated for oral clefts. A case-control study was conducted in greater metropolitan Boston; Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and southeastern Ontario, Canada, from 1988 through 1991 to test the hypothesis that folic acid supplementation during the periconceptional period reduces the risk of oral clefts. Crude and multivariate-adjusted relative risks were calculated for all oral clefts (n = 303), cleft palate (n = 1

Electrophysiological features of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether patients with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) associated with SARS-CoV-2 show characteristic electrophysiological features. METHODS: Clinical and electrophysiological findings of 24 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and AIDP (S-AIDP) and of 48 control AIDP (C-AIDP) without SARS-CoV-2 infection were compared. RESULTS: S-AIDP patients more frequently developed respiratory failure (83.3% vs. 25%, P=0.000) and required intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization (58.3% vs. 31.3%, P=0.000). In C-AIDP, distal motor latencies (DMLs) were more frequ

Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein Bidirectionally Controls Dendritic Ih in a Cell Type-Specific Manner between Mouse Hippocampus and Prefrontal Cortex.

Channelopathies are implicated in Fragile X syndrome (FXS), yet the dysfunction of a particular ion channel varies with cell type. We previously showed that HCN channel function is elevated in CA1 dendrites of the fmr1-/y mouse model of FXS, but reduced in L5 PFC dendrites. Using male mice, we tested whether Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRPO), the protein whose absence causes FXS, differentially modulates HCN channels in CA1 versus L5 PFC dendrites. Using a combination of viral tools, intracellular peptide, and dendritic electrophysiology, we found that FMRP regulates HCN channels vi

Local effects of acupuncture on the median and ulnar nerves in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome: a pilot mechanistic study protocol.

BACKGROUND: While acupuncture's mechanism of action is not fully understood, there is consensus that the nervous system plays a key role in processing its effects. This research is based on the structural theory of acupuncture, which aims to correlate the location of acupuncture points to peripheral nerves, spinal segments, and spinal plexuses. This mechanistic study explores the close anatomical association between the Pericardium meridian/median nerve and the Heart meridian/ulnar nerve in an attempt to produce electrophysiologic data measuring acupuncture's direct, nerve-specific effect on t

The role of blink reflex R1 latency as an electrophysiological marker in diabetic distal symmetrical polyneuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Studies showed a relatively prolonged blink R1 latency in patients with diabetic distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) compared to that without DSPN. We tested the hypothesis that blink R1 latency would provide a diagnostic alternative to nerve conduction studies (NCS) in DSPN and act as a marker of the severity of NCS abnormalities in DSPN. METHOD: A total of 109 patients with type 2 diabetes underwent blink reflex studies and NCS. We used the composite amplitude scores of nerve conductions (CAS), which consisted of motor (tibial, peroneal and ulnar) and sensory (sural and ulna

The nature of respiratory muscle weakness in patients with late-onset Pompe disease.

Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) causes myopathy of skeletal and respiratory muscles, and phrenic nerve pathology putatively contributes to diaphragm weakness. The aim of this study was to investigate neural contributions to diaphragm dysfunction, usefulness of diaphragm ultrasound, and involvement of expiratory abdominal muscles in LOPD. Thirteen patients with LOPD (7 male, 51±17 years) and 13 age- and gender-matched controls underwent respiratory muscle strength testing, ultrasound evaluation of diaphragm excursion and thickness, cortical and cervical magnetic stimulation (MS) of the diaphrag

Characteristics of respiratory muscle involvement in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

The pathophysiology of respiratory muscle weakness in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) remains incompletely understood. 21 adult patients with DM1 (11 men, 42 ± 13 years) and 21 healthy matched controls underwent spirometry, manometry, and diaphragm ultrasound. In addition, surface electromyography of the diaphragm and the obliquus abdominis muscle was performed following cortical and posterior cervical magnetic stimulation (CMS) of the phrenic nerves or magnetic stimulation of the lower thoracic nerve roots. Magnetic stimulation was combined with invasive recording of the twitch transdiaphragm
