Integrative omics identify NID2 as a therapeutic target linking depression and colorectal cancer in humans.

Depression is frequently comorbid with gastrointestinal malignancies, yet the biological links governing this relationship require precise characterization. Analysis of a prospective colonoscopy cohort (n = 2,857) and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (n = 37,597) shows that major depression is associated with an increased prevalence of colorectal precancerous lesions and cancer risk. Two-sample Mendelian randomization supports a causal effect of depression on colorectal tumorigenesis. By integrating plasma protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) with colorectal neoplasia ge

Human milk and breastfeeding at the first oral feed for infants with critical congenital heart disease: a multi-institutional study.

OBJECTIVE: Describe nutrition type/route at the first oral feed (FOF) for infants with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD); identify supportive/limiting factors. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort; adjusted regression estimated associations between parental/clinical factors and human milk or breastfeeding at the FOF. RESULT: For 1355 infants across 15 sites, human milk was used in 78.5% of FOFs, with 34.5% breastfeeding. Human milk was associated with parent presence (OR: 5.32, p < 0.001) and with feeding/lactation consults (2.49, p < 0.001). Private insurance predicted human milk (1.87

Microbiota and nutrition as risk and resiliency factors following prenatal alcohol exposure.

Alcohol exposure in adulthood can result in inflammation, malnutrition, and altered gastroenteric microbiota, which may disrupt efficient nutrient extraction. Clinical and preclinical studies have documented convincingly that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) also results in persistent inflammation and nutrition deficiencies, though research on the impact of PAE on the enteric microbiota is in its infancy. Importantly, other neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, have been linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis. The combined evidence fr

[Post-operative Management After Surgery for Diminutive Branch Pulmonary Arteries].

Congenital severe peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis is usually associated with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral artery. Complications mainly related to respiratory system frequently occur after peripheral pulmonary artery patch augmentation with or without uniforcalization. Pulmonary hemorrhage and airway bleeding can be fatal. Airway compression from surrounding structures such as reconstructed central pulmonary artery, pulmonary hypertension, ventilation/perfusion mismatch, and pulmonary ischemia reperfusion injury are also life-threating co

Practical management of home parenteral nutrition in infancy.

The child born today with chronic intestinal failure (IF) can expect to survive throughout childhood and into adult life even if dependent on parenteral nutrition (PN) support. The three major aetiologies of chronic IF are short bowel syndrome (SBS), intestinal dysmotility and mucosal disease. SBS is the commonest of these conditions in infancy, most frequently subsequent to resection for necrotising enterocolits (NEC). The focus of IF management is to ensure appropriate weight gain and growth whilst minimising complications (related to underlying disease as well as to PN) and aiming for intes

Adaptation to thermotolerance in Rhizopus coincides with virulence as revealed by avian and invertebrate infection models, phylogeny, physiological and metabolic flexibility.

Mucormycoses are fungal infections caused by the ancient Mucorales. They are rare, but increasingly reported. Predisposing conditions supporting and favoring mucormycoses in humans and animals include diabetic ketoacidosis, immunosuppression and haematological malignancies. However, comprehensive surveys to elucidate fungal virulence in ancient fungi are limited and so far focused on Lichtheimia and Mucor. The presented study focused on one of the most important causative agent of mucormycoses, the genus Rhizopus (Rhizopodaceae). All known clinically-relevant species are thermotolerant and are

[Palliative treatment for colorectal cancer].

Over 50,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in Germany every year. About half of these patients will be cured by surgery. The other reoccur or present primarily with advanced disease. Recently, the survival of patients with metastasized disease has been prolonged from about 6 months with best supportive care alone to more than 20 months with combination chemotherapy. Therefore, adequate palliation is reasonable. Irresectable liver metastasis can be treated by locally ablative procedures such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or laserinduced thermotherapy (LITT). In the individual c

Ventilatory techniques during weaning.

Ventilatory techniques are only a part of the weaning process, that also includes medical therapy, physiokinesitherapy, nutrition, psychological support and nursing. Traditional ventilatory techniques used in weaning are: T-piece trials (alternated with assist-control ventilation (ACV)), pressure support ventilation (PSV), intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation. None of these techniques has been demonstrated to be better than the others, and the physician must be prepared--to try alternate strategies according to the kind of patient.

Leveraging real-world data to predict cancer cachexia stage, quality of life, and survival in a racially and ethnically diverse multi-institutional cohort of treatment-naïve patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-associated cachexia (CC) is a progressive syndrome characterized by unintentional weight loss, muscle atrophy, fatigue, and poor outcomes that affects most patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The ability to identify and classify CC stage along its continuum early in the disease process is challenging but critical for management. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of CC stage overall and by sex and race and ethnicity among treatment-naïve PDAC cases using clinical, nutritional, and functional criteria. Secondary

From Food Additives to Neurodegeneration: The Emerging Role of Polyphosphates in Tauopathies.

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by progressive molecular and biochemical dysfunctions that disrupt neuronal homeostasis, leading to impaired nervous system function. In tauopathies, a specific class of neurodegenerative disorders, tau protein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction are pathological processes interconnected in a self-reinforcing cycle. In fact, tau fibrils impair mitochondrial transport, bioenergetics, and quality control, while mitochondrial dysregulation causes tau post-translational modifications, detachment from neurons, and aggregation. In this context, inor

Non-HDL Cholesterol as a Practical Gatekeeper for Adolescent Dyslipidemia Screening: Implications for Nutrition and Public Health.

Dyslipidemia in adolescents represents an early and potentially modifiable stage in the lifelong trajectory of cardiovascular disease. However, optimal lipid screening strategies in this age group remain controversial, particularly regarding feasibility, biological relevance, and reliance on family history. Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL cholesterol) has emerged as a promising screening marker because it reflects the total burden of atherogenic lipoproteins and can be reliably assessed even without fasting, making it particularly suitable for large-scale pediatric screening

From plate to pillow: the role of food-derived bioactive compounds in sleep modulation and the potential of glia-neuron crosstalk.

Sleep is a critical physiological process, yet the prevalence of sleep disorders is on the rise worldwide. Traditional pharmacological treatments often have limitations, prompting the search for alternative non-pharmacological interventions. Food-derived bioactive compounds (FBCs) have emerged as promising natural modulators for sleep improvement, offering vast potential for functional food development. This review systematically evaluates the nutritional significance of five major FBC categories: amino acids, polyphenols, fatty acids, bioactive peptides, and melatonin/indole derivatives. Furt

Adding Value to Cassava Genetic Resources Conserved at CIAT-Part II: Fifty Years of Evaluation and Use of Landraces for Variety Development.

For millennia, farmers in cassava's homeland in the neotropics selected varieties suited to their climate, soils, biological environments, management systems, and nutritional needs. These actions were fundamental to the crop's success as a reliable staple energy source. After the arrival of Europeans in the New World, these varieties spread first to Africa and later to Asia, where they were further selected for local conditions and needs. The founders of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture in Cali, Colombia, recognized the importance of legacy landrace varieties as sources of gen

Challenges and promises of nutritional epidemiology to investigate cancer etiology.

The relationship between diet and cancer is complex and has been the subject of scientific controversy. Recent estimates of the fraction of cancer incidence attributable to (poor) diet ranged from 5% to 13% across different study populations. Despite growing evidence linking dietary exposures to cancer risk, nutritional epidemiology faces major challenges, including exposure misclassification, confounding, and difficulties in assessing long-term and changing dietary habits. Advances such as use of biomarker and other -omics measurements, complex statistical framework, and longitudinal web-base

Addressing vitamin A deficiency in Ghana using orange-fleshed sweet potato as a food fortifier in composite flour development: a review.

Transforming food systems is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 3, particularly in reducing hunger and micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa. This requires prioritising the specific food micronutrients and establishing approaches to ensure their efficient delivery to the consuming public. This review examines the potential of nutrient-dense indigenous crops, with emphasis on orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP), as sustainable food-based strategies for addressing vitamin A deficiency in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa at large. Effect of double duty interventions on dietary diversity score of adolescents using a cluster randomized controlled trial in Debre Berhan Regiopolitan City, Ethiopia.

Improving the dietary quality of adolescents is crucial in public health, especially in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Despite numerous nutritional interventions, those interventions targeting adolescents were inconsistent due to fragmented implementation. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of selected double-duty interventions on the dietary diversity scores (DDS) of adolescents in Debre Berhan Regiopolitan City, Central Ethiopia. A two-arm parallel cluster randomized controlled study involved 708 adolescents (356 for intervention group (IG) and 352 for control group (CG)) was

Enhancing Male Fertility Through Nutrition: The Role of L-Carnitine in Asthenozoospermic Patients.

Infertility, which affects millions worldwide, often involves male factors such as asthenozoospermia, a condition marked by reduced sperm motility. While lifestyle and environmental factors are major contributors, nutritional interventions offer an effective, non-invasive approach to treatment. This case report examines the effects of L-carnitine supplementation on male infertility in a 37-year-old patient with a six-year history of primary infertility. The patient followed a three-month protocol that included 3000 mg of L-carnitine daily, dietary changes rich in antioxidants, and lifestyle mo

In vitro and in vivo study on the effects of nutritive media compared with water on the resuscitation of a live attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium vaccine.

In this study, a commercially available Salmonella Typhimurium vaccine (Vaxsafe ST) reconstituted in either water or nutrient broth, was tested to understand its effects on the in vitro invasion of Caco-2 cells and its transcriptional regulation post-reconstitution. Over time, the invasiveness of Vaxsafe ST was significantly higher following reconstitution in nutrient broth compared with water. Incubation temperature post-reconstitution did not significantly affect the invasion rate. Transcriptome data showed that Vaxsafe ST reconstituted in nutrient broth upregulated genes involved in the two
