Chirality-Dependent Orbital Bulk Photovoltaic Effect in a 1D Helical Nanowire.

Bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a novel nonlinear-optical (NLO) effect for the development of advanced optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a new type of BPVE, chirality-dependent orbital BPVE (orbit-BPVE), in a one-dimensional (1D) helical system, whose orbital-polarized photocurrent is solely determined by the chirality. This orbit-BPVE is contributed by the chirality-dependent orbital angular momentum (OAM), and the chirality-locked spin-BPVE is a secondary effect arising from the orbit-BPVE, mediated by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The minimal-model calculations further demonstrate tha…

Orbital myositis: an uncommon ophthalmic presentation in scleroderma-polymyositis overlap syndrome.

Scleroderma-polymyositis overlap syndrome (SSc-PM) is an uncommon autoimmune condition characterised by clinical and serological features of both systemic sclerosis and inflammatory myopathy. Ocular manifestations of this syndrome are rare and insufficiently described in the literature. We report a case of SSc-PM presenting with orbital myositis as the primary manifestation, accompanied by proximal myopathy. A middle-aged woman presented with a 3-month history of progressive finger skin tightening, painless diplopia and restricted eye movements. Ophthalmological evaluation and imaging confirme…

Intra-orbital Marble Injury in a Child After a Fall: A Case Report.

An intra-orbital foreign body is a devastating ocular condition that might end up as blindness if prompt treatment is not carried out. This is a case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with a right lower eyelid laceration. She was playing with a marble and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe. Accidentally, she fell with the PVC pipe that pierced her right lower eyelid region. CT scan of the brain, orbit, and paranasal sinus revealed a spherical-shaped high-attenuation focus within the right maxillary sinus extending to the inferior orbital cavity. She underwent surgical exploration and removal of …

Penetrating orbital floor injury by an undetected foreign body: a case report.

Orbital trauma can result in significant complications, particularly when accompanied by foreign body entrapment. Wooden foreign bodies are rare but carry a high risk of infection and chronic inflammation. In these cases, immediate surgical intervention is critical for restoring orbital anatomy and preventing complications. A 16-year-old male patient presented with a 2-month history of persistent pus discharge from his right cheek following facial trauma sustained from a fall. Initial management involved drainage of the abscess; however, the condition persisted. On examination, the patient exh…

Orbital Myeloid Sarcoma: An Initial Presentation of Acute Myeloid Leukemia With Maturation.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is predominantly an adult disease, with significantly lower incidence in children. Myeloid sarcoma (MS), an extramedullary manifestation of AML, can occur in various tissues, though it is exceptionally rare in the orbit. The variable nature of MS complicates its diagnosis and treatment. In this report, we present the case of an eight-year-old boy who exhibited bilateral proptosis and an orbital mass. Initial investigations revealed thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. Imaging tests confirmed an expansive retroorbital lesion. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated positivity…

Spheno-orbital meningiomas: predictors of recurrence and novel strategies for surgical management.

OBJECTIVE: Spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs) represent approximately 2%-9% of tumors affecting the sphenoid wings. The main challenge in treating these meningiomas is achieving gross-total resection (GTR) due to the hyperostosis, which is pathognomonic. This study explored potential correlations between the recurrence rate of SOM and the extent of resection (EOR) of both the bony tumor portion (BTP) and soft tumor portion (STP). Additionally, it analyzed the progression-free survival (PFS) of SOM patients in relation to the EOR, adjuvant treatments, and other recognized risk factors, including…
