Prenatal greenness exposure and the decreased risk of low birthweight and small for gestational age: modification and mediation effects of air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Despite accumulating evidence linking greenness with the decreased risk of low birthweight (LBW), the potential modification and mediation effects of ambient air pollution remain unstudied. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide birth cohort analysis using nearly 3.9 million registry-based mother-infant records across 31 provinces in Iran during 2013-2018. Greenness exposure during pregnancy was assessed utilizing the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within multiple buffers (500-3000 m). Logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations of maternal greenness

Ambient air pollutant mixture and lung function among children in Fresno, California.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) have been associated with lower lung function among children. However, the reported associations could be due to correlation with other pollutants. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the relationships between exposures to eight ambient air pollutants and children's lung function and apply mixture analysis to identify key contributors to health effects. METHODS: The Children's Health and Air Pollution Study (CHAPS) in Fresno, California, is a prospective cohort study that recruited 299 children a…

The different impacts of ambient air pollution exposure on the risks of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia in twin pregnancies.

Air pollution may raise hypertension risk, but its effects on gestational hypertension and preeclampsia in twin pregnancies are unclear. This retrospective study of 3670 twin pregnancies divided participants into three groups: gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and no hypertension. The preeclampsia group was further split into mild and severe preeclampsia. The effects of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3) on the risks of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia were assessed during preconception, the first and second trimesters, and the first 20 weeks using multivariate l

Ambient PM2.5 exposure and tuberculosis reactivation: a cross-sectional study in an intermediate burden city.

Hong Kong is an intermediate tuberculosis (TB) endemicity city dominated by reactivation diseases. A cross-sectional study on the clinical and epidemiologic data of newly diagnosed TB cases was conducted in such a setting, to examine the association between ambient PM2.5 and TB reactivation. After the exclusion of cases most likely resulting from recent infection, four distinct TB population phenotypes were delineated by latent class analysis based on their reactivation risk and clinical profiles (N = 2,153): 'Elderly male' (26%), 'Otherwise healthy younger adult' (34%), 'Older female' (19%) a

Protective potentials of extracted compound SILIBININ from milk thistle on type-2 diabetes mellitus and diesel exhaust particle (DEP) toxicity in experimental rats.

The combustion of diesel in engines contributes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) present in the atmosphere, therefore causing toxic mitigating consequences by eliciting oxidative modulation. Currently, type 2 diabetes mellitus is reported as a global menace, causing about 1.5 million deaths in 2019 and contributing to about 48% of related deaths among the populace aged below 70 years. (GBDCN, 2020). Silibinin (SIL) is a flavolignan from milk thistle with substantive therapeutic potential. This work elucidates the effects of SIL on glucose modulatory pathways …

Comparison of the rate of healthcare encounters for influenza from source-specific PM2.5 before and after tier 3 vehicle standards in New York state.

BACKGROUND: Influenza healthcare encounters in adults associated with specific sources of PM2.5 is an area of active research. OBJECTIVE: Following 2017 legislation requiring reductions in emissions from light-duty vehicles, we hypothesized a reduced rate of influenza healthcare encounters would be associated with concentrations of PM2.5 from traffic sources in the early implementation period of this regulation (2017-2019). METHODS: We used the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) to study adult patients hospitalized (N = 5328) or treated in the emergency department (N
