Descriptive Characteristics and Initial Psychometric Properties of the Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Disorder Scale.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent and associated with tissue damage, emotional distress, and psychiatric disorders. While often discussed in the context of Borderline Personality Disorder and suicide, research demonstrates that NSSI is distinct from these constructs and should be viewed as an independent diagnostic category. Recently, Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Disorder (NSSID) was included in the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a condition for further study. In this article, we describe the properties of a self-report measure designed to assess

Filicide: mental illness in those who kill their children.

BACKGROUND: Most child victims of homicide are killed by a parent or step-parent. This large population study provides a contemporary and detailed description of filicide perpetrators. We examined the relationship between filicide and mental illness at the time of the offence, and care received from mental health services in the past. METHOD: All filicide and filicide-suicide cases in England and Wales (1997-2006) were drawn from a national index of homicide perpetrators. Data on people in contact with mental health services were obtained via a questionnaire from mental health teams. Addition

Risk factors for suicide in Hungary: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Hungary previously had one of the highest suicide rates in the world, but experienced major social and economic changes from 1990 onwards. We aimed to investigate the antecedents of suicide in Hungary. We hypothesised that suicide in Hungary would be associated with both risk factors for suicide as identified in Western studies, and experiences related to social and economic restructuring. METHODS: We carried out a controlled psychological autopsy study. Informants for 194 cases (suicide deaths in Budapest and Pest County 2002-2004) and 194 controls were interviewed by clinicians

Nine-year follow-up of panic disorder in chest pain patients: clinical course and predictors of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the association between panic disorder (PD) and long-term outcomes in terms of psychiatric morbidity, psychological distress and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and to identify predictors of poor outcome for PD in chest pain patients. METHOD: Nine-year follow-up study of chest pain patients (n=199) referred to cardiology outpatient investigation. Assessments included Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R), Illness Attitude Scale, Agoraphobia Cognitions Questionnaire, the Mobility Inventory for Agoraphobia, Pers

Decision-making deficits in alcohol-dependent patients with and without comorbid personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in decision making are a consistent finding in substance use disorder (SUD) populations. However, decision-making deficits are not specific for SUDs and are also reported in the context of other psychiatric disorders such as antisocial and borderline personality disorders (PDs). Given the frequent comorbidity between SUD and cluster B PD, it might be questioned whether the decision-making impairments typically reported in SUD populations reflect the addictive disorder, the cluster B PD, or a combination of the 2. METHODS: In the current study, we compare the decision-m

Morbidity in Klinefelter syndrome: a Danish register study based on hospital discharge diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most prevalent sex chromosome disorder in man; it affects approximately one in 660 men and is a common cause of hypogonadism and infertility. Our current knowledge of morbidity in KS is based on observational studies and case reports and therefore is limited. DESIGN: We used Danish registers to obtain dates of hospital admissions and discharge diagnoses in a cohort of all males diagnosed with KS in Denmark and a randomly selected, age-matched control group. Our cohort consisted of 832 KS subjects and 4033 control subjects, contributing with a total

[The influence of patient- and treatment-related factors on the success of inpatient psychotherapy].

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the symptomatic and interpersonal efficacy of inpatient psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as the influence of several patient- and treatment-related factors on the success of psychotherapy. METHODS: In this naturalistic study, 715 patients were assessed with the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP). The influence of several patient-and treatment-related factors on the success of psychotherapy was analyzed using logistic regression. RESULTS: Patients improved significantly on all SCL-90-R and IIP scales. The patie

The brief resilience scale: a genome-wide association study in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Some individuals exposed to traumatic stressors develop psychiatric disorders while others remain resilient. The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) assesses the ability to "bounce back" from stress and is a widely used measure of trait resilience. We performed the first genome-wide association study of BRS in the UK Biobank (UKB). METHODS: Beginning 2022, a subset of UKB participants completed an on-line mental-health questionnaire that included the six-item BRS. BRS data and genome-wide typing and imputation were available for 124,774 participants of European ancestry. Genome-wide line

Transdiagnostic skills training group of dialectical behavior therapy: a long-term naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has assembled a large body of evidence for the treatment of emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also in other disorders characterized by emotional dysregulation (e.g., bipolar disorder (BD) and ADHD). Standalone skills learning groups address the problem of limited resources in several clinical settings. Furthermore, transdiagnostic skills groups facilitate the recruitment and decrease the scattering of resources in psychiatric settings. However, few studies have focused on the pertinence of transdiagnostic stan

Physical and mental illness comorbidity among individuals with frequent self-harm episodes: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Research has indicated an increased risk of self-harm repetition and suicide among individuals with frequent self-harm episodes. Co-occurring physical and mental illness further increases the risk of self-harm and suicide. However, the association between this co-occurrence and frequent self-harm episodes is not well understood. The objectives of the study were (a) to examine the sociodemographic and clinical profile of individuals with frequent self-harm (regardless of suicidal intent) episodes and, (b) the association between physical and mental illness comorbidity, self-harm rep

Hospitalization costs associated with homelessness in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is believed to be a cause of health problems and high medical costs, but data supporting this association have been difficult to obtain. We compared lengths of stay and reasons for hospital admission among homeless and other low-income persons in New York City to estimate the hospitalization costs associated with homelessness. METHODS: We obtained hospital-discharge data on 18,864 admissions of homeless adults to New York City's public general hospitals (excluding admissions for childbirth) and 383,986 nonmaternity admissions of other low-income adults to all general

Exploring the factor structure of the mini-ICF-APP in an inpatient clinical sample, according to the psychiatric diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Psychosocial functioning is a key factor determining prognosis, severity, impairment and quality of life in people who have a mental disorder. The mini-ICF-APP was developed to provide a standardised classification of functioning and disability. However, despite its gaining popularity little is known about its structure and performance. This paper examines the structure of the mini-ICF-APP using factor analysis techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a clinical sample of 3178 patients, with psychiatric diagnoses from several ICD-10 categories, we analysed internal consistency, ite

Cocaine use and other suspected risk factors for obsessive-compulsive disorder: a prospective study with data from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area surveys.

Using prospectively gathered epidemiologic data, we sought to estimate the degree to which the risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder might be elevated among adults actively using cocaine, with and without illicit use of marijuana or other controlled substances. Study subjects were selected in 1980-84 by taking probability samples of adult household residents at five sites of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Program: New Haven, Connecticut; Baltimore, Maryland; St. Louis, Missouri; Durham-Piedmont, North Carolina; Los Angeles, California. Soon after sampling at baseline, a total of 18,572

Psychotic and bipolar disorder diagnoses following contact with child and adolescent mental health services-a longitudinal, nationwide register study of 2 million individuals.

BACKGROUND: Identification of individuals at elevated risk of schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorders is a clinical research priority. Current strategies for psychosis risk identification, however, identify only a small proportion of future cases. Additional high-risk approaches are needed, ideally with higher sensitivity, which may include focusing on systems in which risk factors for psychosis are naturally concentrated, such as child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). METHODS: We examined the proportion of psychosis and bipolar disorder cases occurring in individuals who h

Non-standard diagnostic assessment reliability in psychiatry: a study in a Brazilian outpatient setting using Kappa.

The use of Structured Diagnostic Assessments (SDAs) is a solution for unreliability in psychiatry and the gold standard for diagnosis. However, except for studies between the 50 s and 70 s, reliability without the use of Non-SDAs (NSDA) is seldom tested, especially in non-Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) countries. We aim to measure reliability between examiners with NSDAs for psychiatric disorders. We compared diagnostic agreement after clinician change, in an outpatient academic setting. We used inter-rater Kappa measuring 8 diagnostic groups: Depression (DD: F

Problematic internet use in gamblers: impact on clinical and cognitive measures.

OBJECTIVE: Gambling is a commonplace phenomenon, existing along a continuum from occasional gambling to functionally impairing gambling disorder. The internet may act as a conduit for some gambling behaviors. The impact of problematic internet use on clinical and cognitive features relevant to gambling has received little research attention. METHODS: A total of 206 adults aged 18-30 years who gamble at least five times per year were recruited from the general community and undertook detailed clinical and cognitive assessments. Problematic internet use was defined using a total score of 5 or m

Association of eating disorder symptoms with internalizing and externalizing dimensions of psychopathology among men and women.

OBJECTIVE: A large body of factor analytic research supports the idea that common mental disorders are organized along correlated latent dimensions termed internalizing and externalizing. Eating disorders (EDs) have been associated with both internalizing (mood and anxiety disorders) and externalizing (substance use, antisocial personality disorder) forms of psychopathology. Previous studies found that EDs are most strongly related to internalizing disorders. However, no previous factor analytic studies of EDs and the internalizing/externalizing dimensions have evaluated if EDs align with thes

Disinhibition domain and facets uniquely predict changes in depressive symptoms and psychosocial functioning.

This study aimed to understand the role of disinhibition (low conscientiousness)-in conjunction with the other major personality traits of negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism, and psychoticism-in predicting changes in depressive symptoms and psychosocial functioning. Both the disinhibition trait domain and its primary facets (i.e., irresponsibility, impulsivity, and distractibility) were examined. In a large sample (Time 1 N = 605, Time 2 N = 497) of psychiatric outpatients and high-risk community residents, personality traits, depressive symptoms (both self-reported and interviewer-r

Geospatial Distribution of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Specialists: Understanding Access as a Function of Distance, Insurance Status, and Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an impairing psychiatric condition affecting 1-2% of adults and youth. Cognitive-behavioral therapy with exposure and response prevention (CBT) is an efficacious intervention but requires specialty training and access is often limited. While certain factors are associated with treatment access, one key barrier that has not been explored is the geographic availability of OCD treatment providers. Using integrated geographically-referenced data, we examined the geographic distribution of OCD CBT specialty providers across the state of Texas, with particular attent

Characteristics of individuals meeting criteria for new onset panic attacks following exposure to a typhoon.

The association between trauma exposure and panic attacks has received increased attention over the past decade, with mounting evidence suggesting an overlapping etiologic pathway. This study examined the incidence of new onset panic attacks in 775 Vietnamese individuals in the 2-3 months following Typhoon Xangsane. Pre-typhoon (Wave 1) and post-typhoon (Wave 2) assessments were conducted, allowing for consideration of factors occurring prior to the typhoon in addition to typhoon-relevant responding. Of the 775 participants, 11.6% (n=90) met criteria for lifetime panic attack pre-typhoon and 2
