Narcolepsy is a rare neurological sleep disorder affecting around 0.05% of the general population. Genetic factors are known to have an important role in narcolepsy. The adenosine A2a receptor (A2aAR) is thought to be implicated in the pathogenesis of panic disorder because caffeine, a potent antagonist for A2aAR, can precipitate panic attacks, and because disruption of the A2aAR gene increased anxiety-behaviors in mice. Recent studies demonstrated that the A2aAR 1976T > C genetic variant confers susceptibility to panic disorder though not by all studies. The present study tested the hypothesis that the A2aAR 1976T > C genetic variant confers susceptibility to panic disorder using a Chinese population of 104 panic disorder patients and 192 normal controls.

A compilation of all prescriptions issued for glaucoma medication in Iceland for a 6 months period, together with hospital records of all patients operated on for primary open-angle glaucoma but not on glaucoma medication, were analysed for the prevalence and distribution of glaucoma in Iceland. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health issue that causes significant morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Pediatric minor TBIs are the most common and are widely underreported because not all patients seek medical attention. The specific management of these patients is distinct from that of adult patients because of the different physiologies in these age groups. This article focuses on minor TBIs, particularly growing skull fractures, traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and concussion.

Mucopolysaccharidosis VI is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder associated with severe disability and premature death. The presence of a mucopolysaccharidosis-like disease in indigenous ethnic groups in Colombia can be inferred from archaeological findings. There are several indigenous patients with mucopolysaccharidosis VI currently receiving enzyme replacement therapy. We discuss the ethical and economic considerations, regarding both direct and indirect costs, of a high-cost orphan disease in a marginalised minority population in a developing country.

There is a controversy discussion on screening for aneurysms in risk groups. True guidelines do not exist so far. It seems that screening for familial aneurysms is not advisable today. But adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients with a familial history of SAH should be screened because of a high prevalence rate of 25% for intracranial aneurysms in this population. Screening should be performed every 2 to 3 years by MRI angiography in this special risk group.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma with a neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. In different studies median survival time has been measured between 19 and 50 months. Several prognostic factors help to subdivide the patient population in risk groups. The treatment is palliative until now and the individual concept of therapy includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other treatment modalities. Evidence of progressive or symptomatic disease is usually required for initiation of chemotherapy.

The number and regularity of X-ray studies in adolescents with active chest tuberculosis in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) were analyzed. There was a high proportion of early X-ray examinations. The larger number (more than 80%) of X-ray studies were conducted for follow-ups of a specific process. In this connection, radiation load on adolescents from the examined groups was several times higher than the mean radiation dose for the population during X-ray examinations.
