Changes in Hand Hygiene Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Among Primary School Students: Insights from a Promotion Program in Guatemala.

School-aged children are vulnerable to infectious diseases due to their developing immune systems and frequent social interactions. This study evaluated the changes achieved through a school-based intervention to Guatemalan primary school students' HH knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported practices while collecting teacher feedback to inform future efforts. The intervention included handwashing festivals, environmental nudges, and the regular delivery of soap and alcohol-based hand r

Staphylococcus aureus in two municipal abattoirs in Nigeria: Risk perception, spread and public health implications.

Staphylococcus aureus is a zoonotic pathogen of significant public health concern. Information on the prevalence and risk factors facilitating bacterial colonization and spread under abattoir settings in Nigeria are scarce. This cross-sectional study was designed to determine prevalence of S. aureus as well as risk factors on knowledge and practices facilitating pathogen carriage among workers and slaughter animals in two municipal abattoirs of Ilorin and Ibadan, Nigeria. Swab samples (n = 1671) from nostrils of cattle, goats, pigs and abattoir workers, and from meat tables and abattoir walls

HIV testing during the Canadian immigration medical examination: a national survey of designated medical practitioners.

HIV testing is mandatory for individuals wishing to immigrate to Canada. Since the Designated Medical Practitioners (DMPs) who perform these tests may have varying experience in HIV and time constraints in their clinical practices, there may be variability in the quality of pre- and posttest counseling provided. We surveyed DMPs regarding HIV testing, counseling, and immigration inadmissibility. A 16-item survey was mailed to all DMPs across Canada (N = 203). The survey inquired about DMP characteristics, knowledge of HIV, attitudes and practices regarding inadmissibility and counseling, and i

Quantifying Health Outcome Disparity in Invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection using Fairness Algorithms on Real-World Data.

This study quantifies health outcome disparities in invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections by leveraging a novel artificial intelligence (AI) fairness algorithm, the Fairness-Aware Causal paThs (FACTS) decomposition, and applying it to real-world electronic health record (EHR) data. We spatiotemporally linked 9 years of EHRs from a large healthcare provider in Florida, USA, with contextual social determinants of health (SDoH). We first created a causal structure graph connecting SDoH with individual clinical measurements before/upon diagnosis of invasive MRSA in

Upon the determination that the diagnostic and therapeutic interventions implemented by health personnel overlooked predefined procedures, the National Institute of Public Health, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, immediately designed the massive open online course "Proper cholera containment and management measures" to strengthen and standardize basic prevention and control practices. METHODS: During the first 5 months, 35,968 pa

They Don't Even Know Your Name: An Intergenerational Modeling Deficit in Patient-Centered Practice.

Introduction This study explored how hidden curriculum mechanisms shape patient-centered care (PCC) attitudes among medical students in a Spanish public medical school with minimal formal PCC instruction, and how these mechanisms may be perceived to reproduce themselves when faculty PCC development is limited. Methods We conducted 11 focus groups with 93 medical students (83 third-year preclinical and 10 sixth-year clinical students; the sixth-year group was treated as exploratory). Sessions were audio- and video-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Review: The return of vaccine-preventable diseases: Implications for pediatric surgical and perioperative care.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) have long been considered rare in modern pediatric practice, a success attributable to sustained high immunization coverage. However, recent declines in vaccination rates have reintroduced the possibility that surgical teams will encounter conditions once thought largely historical. This review examines the emerging intersection of vaccine hesitancy and pediatric surgical care, highlighting the clinical, perioperative, and systems-level implications of the increasing number of under-immunized children. The resurgence of VPDs presents new and renewed challeng
