Fast and Accurate Sperm Detection Algorithm for Micro-TESE in NOA Patients.

PURPOSE: Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) presents major challenges in assisted reproductive technology (ART) due to the extremely low number of viable sperm within testicular tissue. In Micro-TESE procedures, embryologists manually search for sperm under DIC microscopy-a slow, labor-intensive process. We aim to streamline this process with an efficient computational detection tool. METHODS: We present SD-CLIP (Sperm Detection using Classical Image Processing), a lightweight, real-time algorithm that simulates sperm structure detection from unstained DIC images. The model first identifies co

Amino acid chemistry and post-translational modifications underlying marine adhesive proteins: Biochemical insights for designing underwater adhesives.

Underwater adhesion remains a complex challenge due to the interference of water with traditional bonding mechanisms. Marine organisms, such as mussels, sandcastle worms, and barnacles, have evolved specialized adhesive proteins that overcome these limitations through functional amino acid motifs. This review highlights how post-translationally derived amino acid motifs, such as 3,4-dihydroxylphenylalanine (DOPA) and phosphoserine, drive interfacial adhesion and the curing process through interfacial binding, metal coordination, and crosslinking. Alongside these, canonical amino acids, such as

Dual-Channel Electron Modulation via Cu-N2 Sites and π-Conjugated Framework in COF for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Fluorinated Pharmaceuticals.

The degradation of persistent fluorinated pharmaceuticals under mild conditions remains a formidable challenge in water treatment. Herein, a π-conjugated covalent organic framework (Cu@PCT-COF) featuring atomically dispersed Cu-N2 coordination sites is reported, which synergistically integrates visible-light harvesting and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation for efficient photocatalytic degradation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The integration of an extended π-conjugated backbone with atomically dispersed Cu-N2 sites forms a dual-channel electron transport pathway, which significantly enhances interf

Application of brain organoids in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Understanding the etiology of human neurological and psychiatric disorders remains challenging due to species-specific genomic architectures, prolonged developmental timelines, and the unique cytoarchitectural features of the human brain, which are inadequately replicated in conventional animal models. To address these limitations, human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived brain organoids have emerged as an ethically accessible experimental system that recapitulates critical aspects of early human neurodevelopment in vitro. These three-dimensional (3D) models mimic the generation of neural pr

Irreversible electroporation in focal therapy for prostate cancer: current status and future directions.

The treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) requires approaches that eliminate malignant tissue while preserving essential urinary and sexual functions. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) represents a targeted ablative strategy that disrupts cellular membrane integrity through precise electrical pulses, demonstrating the capacity to ablate cancerous foci while sparing adjacent neurovascular bundles and sphincter mechanisms. This structured review examines the mechanistic foundations of IRE technology, evaluates current clinical evidence regarding safety and efficacy, and explores promising applicat

MOF-Derived Entropy-Stabilized Quinary Alloy@Cellulose Aerogel for Ultrafast Tetracycline Degradation via PMS Activation.

The persistent contamination of aquatic ecosystems by recalcitrant tetracycline antibiotics demands advanced catalytic systems beyond conventional oxidation methods. Here, a sustainable high-entropy catalyst, FeMnCoZnCu@NCNP@CA is reported, comprising MOF-derived multi-metallic nanoparticles confined within a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix and anchored on a 3D cellulose aerogel scaffold. The hybrid is obtained by pyrolyzing a quinary FeMnCoZnCu-NTA MOF precursor. This hierarchical design integrates several key features: high-entropy stabilization to suppress phase segregation, N-doping-driven ch

From identity to function: unveiling the cellular complexity of hypothalamic feeding circuits.

The hypothalamus is arguably the most complex part of the brain, with the greatest heterogeneity of cellular populations. It is an integration center for peripheral signals and external stimuli and plays a key role in coordinating a myriad of fundamental biological functions, including energy homeostasis. To fully understand how the hypothalamus functions, we first need to unravel cellular heterogeneity of this brain region. In hypothalamic research, the vast majority of 'ground truths' have, until recently, emerged from low-throughput murine studies. However, the advent of high-throughput, si

Bioactive Self-Adaptive Hydrogel Platform for Integrated Electrical Stimulation Therapy and Clinical Monitoring of Postoperative Wound.

Postoperative wound management remains clinically challenging due to delayed healing, subcutaneous infections, and the absence of systems capable of real-time therapeutic and diagnostic integration. Addressing this need, we developed a bioactive, self-adaptive hydrogel platform that combines electrical stimulation (ES) therapy with resistance-based bioelectronic sensing for personalized postoperative wound care. The hydrogel is constructed from dynamic borate ester-cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), with wool keratin for hemostasis and tissue remodeling and tannic acid for adhesion, antio

Using Machine Learning With Wearable Devices to Advance Research and Patient Care Using Spinal Cord Injury as a Model.

Wearable devices (WDs) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly used to monitor physiological signals outside of traditional clinical environments, creating new opportunities for real-time, personalized insights. Yet the practical and ethical integration of these technologies into clinical research remains underdeveloped, especially for populations with complex, unstable physiology such as persons with spinal cord injury. In this perspective, we argue that the promise of WDs and ML can only be realized through deliberate alignment between device capabilities, physiological relevance, analyti

Assessing the reliability of open-source data used for spatial characterisation of urban sanitation infrastructure-a field study in Rajshahi, Bangladesh.

Urban sanitation in rapidly growing secondary cities remains a critical challenge, particularly in unsewered areas. This study evaluates the effectiveness of open-source data for modelling the sources and movement of faecal matter in such contexts, with a specific focus on Rajshahi, an unsewered secondary city in Bangladesh. By triangulating data from direct observations, key informant interviews (KIIs), and focus group discussions (FGDs), we assess the reliability of using open-source data to map faecal matter flow. The findings demonstrate an 80% alignment between the model's simulated flow

Personalized Parenteral Nutrition in Critically Ill Patients Undergoing Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: A Comprehensive Framework for Clinical Practice.

Critically ill patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) face distinct nutritional challenges requiring specialized parenteral nutrition (PN) strategies. This review synthesizes current evidence with clinical expertise to provide a comprehensive nutritional framework for this population. Key findings reveal that CRRT significantly impacts nutrient homeostasis through daily losses of amino acids (14-22 g), water-soluble vitamins, and trace elements via the extracorporeal circuit. Results from observational studies demonstrate that higher protein targets (1.8-2.5 g/kg/day) a

The changing role of operational meteorology towards a transdisciplinary approach to future weather and climate services.

This paper describes the role of operational meteorology from a single disciplinary standpoint through to multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and, more recently, transdisciplinary approaches and what this means for future forecasting systems. We start from the foundation of a single meteorological discipline: in this case, the forecasting of wind speed and direction that led to the creation of the first gale warning service in the wake of the 'Royal Charter Storm' in 1859. We build on this, giving further examples of where multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary methods have enhanced our unde

Pharmacological Strategies for Cataract Management: From Molecular Targets to Clinical Translation.

Cataracts, characterized by the opacification of the eye lens, remain a leading cause of reversible blindness globally. Age and diabetes are key risk factors, and with the increasing aging and diabetic population, the global burden of cataracts is projected to rise significantly. Current treatment is predominantly surgical; however, pharmacological strategies could offer a non-invasive alternative with the potential to delay, prevent, or even reverse cataract progression. Recent research has enhanced our understanding of cataractogenesis, emphasizing oxidative stress as a key underlying mechan

A digital twin based forecasting framework for power flow management in DC microgrids.

The ability to forecast system conditions is integral to the definition and functionality of digital twins. While forecasting methods have been explored for use in digital twin systems, the integration of feedback mechanisms for real-time forecasting and in-situ decision-making in DC microgrids has not been extensively investigated. This research develops a modular forecasting framework tailored for digital twins in DC microgrids to enable real-time monitoring, online forecasting, and decision-making. DC microgrids, characterized by dynamic load variations, benefit from advanced predictive cap

Resilient oscillator-based cyberattack detection for distributed secondary control of inverter-interfaced Islanded microgrids.

With the increasing integration of Distributed Generation (DG) units and advanced control systems, microgrids have become more vulnerable to cyberattacks, particularly those targeting secondary control mechanisms. False Data Injection (FDI) and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks can significantly disrupt the stability and performance of microgrids by manipulating communication links and control signals. This paper proposes a robust cyber-resilient strategy to mitigate the impact of cyberattacks on secondary control in islanded AC microgrids. The proposed approach enhances the resilience of freque
