Damage to the parietal lobe impairs bimanual coordination.

Moving the upper limbs at a common tempo according to a mirror or parallel mode represents elementary coordination dynamics. Previously, the role of the medial wall areas have been emphasized for successful production of these bimanual patterns. The involvement of the parietal lobe is less clear despite its importance for the representation of motor skill and sensorimotor integration. The objective of this study was to investigate temporal control in patients with parietal pathology when performing isofrequency configurations. As compared to control subjects, these patients showed desynchroniz

Neurological signs in Alzheimer's disease.

Neurological signs were assessed in 178 patients satisfying NINCDS/ADRDA criteria for Alzheimer's disease. A snout reflex was present in 41%, extrapyramidal signs in 12%, drug-induced extrapyramidal signs in 3%, myoclonus in 5%, and a history of epileptic fits in 3%. A grasp reflex, extrapyramidal signs and symptoms were associated with severe cognitive impairment. On CT scanning, extrapyramidal signs were associated with increased 3rd ventricular size and basal ganglia calcification, a grasp reflex with frontal lobe atrophy and a history of epilepsy with left temporal lobe atrophy. Lateral ve…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore alterations in brain network characteristics among patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) before and af … showed abnormal DC values in multiple brain regions, mainly including the cerebellum, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and cingulate gyrus. One year after CRS treatment, the DC values of the bilateral cerebellum posterior lobe showed a reverse increase. In addition, the DC value of the right cerebellum posterior lobe in pre-CRS MMD patients was positively correlate …

Attention dysfunction of postoperative patients with glioma.

BACKGROUND: Attention dysfunction has been observed among many kinds of nervous system diseases, including glioma. This study aimed to inves … d in both the frontal and parietal lobe groups, while no significant difference was detected in the temporal lobe group compared to healthy controls. The high-grade glioma group (grade III-IV) exhibited more serious functional impairment than the low-grade group (grade I-II). No significant correlation was observed between postoperative recovery time and attent …

Do energy drinks cause epileptic seizure and ischemic stroke?

Energy drinks are popular among young individuals and marketed to college students, athletes, and active individuals between the ages of 21 … ense signal changes in bilateral occipital area (more pronounced in the left occipital lobe), right temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and posterior parietal lobe. All tests associated with possible etiologic causes of ischemic stroke in young patients were negative. Herein, we want to attract attention to adverse effect of energy drink usage.

Clinical experiences with oligoastrocytomas WHO grade II and III.

Between April 1991 and June 2002, 39 patients with an histologically proven oligoastrocytoma WHO grade II and III were operated on in our department. Twenty-two patients were male and 17 female. Mean age was 42 years (20-67 years). The tumor was localized in the frontal lobe in 22 patients, in the temporal lobe in seven patients, in the parietal lobe in nine patients and in the occipital lobe in one patient. The leading clinical symptoms were seizures in 33 patients. Seventeen patients were operated on under local anesthesia. One operation was performed in 22 patients, two operations in eight,…

Determination of the protooncogene ets-2 gene transcript in human brain at the atto-gram-level by the use of competitive RT/PCR.

Only the concerted action of protooncogenes enables normal brain de … he atto-gram level in the brain (54.5 +/- 17.7 ag/ 10 ng RNA in the occipital lobe, 34.2 +/- 7.5 in temporal lobe, 40.2 +/- 15.6 in the frontal lobe, 31.4 +/- 15.7 in the cerebellum, and undetectably low in the parietal lobe). This is the first report at this sensitivity level providing neurobiology with a powerful analytical tool.

Decreased signal intensity of cerebral cortex on T2-weighted MR images.

To define the frequency of decreased signal intensity (DSI) in cerebral cortex on T2-weighted images relative to aging and to the incidence of identifying white matter pathology, T2-weighted MR brain images of 906 patients consecutively examined between July 1989 and June 1991 were reviewed. MR images of cerebral cortex were divided into five areas: frontal lobe (F), pre- and postcentral gyri (C), parietal lobe (P), occipital lobe (O) and temporal lobe (T). Each area was separately and independently evaluated for the presence or absence of DSI. The frequency of DSI in each area was plotted aga…

The Enigmatic temporal pole: a review of findings on social and emotional processing.

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition …

Possible delayed neuronal death after seemingly successful evacuation of traumatic acute subdural hematoma: Image report.

BACKGROUND: The term delayed neuronal death (DND) was originally used to describe the histopathological sequence of neuronal injury followin … rkable. However, a low-density area (LDA) emerged on CT obtained 4 days postoperatively in the left temporal lobe, which did not exhibit interval change in the extent and degree. Although the LDA eventually resolved, atrophy of the left temporal lobe was observed 1 month after injury. CONCLUSION: Among various possible reasons for the delayed emergence of the …

Intraoperative ultrasound for localization of a ruptured M2-M3 middle cerebral artery aneurysm with temporal hematoma: A case report.

We present a patient who had a ruptured distal middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm at the M2-M3 junction with a temporal lobe hematoma, in which intraoperative ultrasound (iUS) proved critical for real-time aneurysm localization when neuronavigation was compromised by brain shift. An elderly patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage and a large temporal lobe intracerebral hematoma underwent craniotomy, hematoma evacuation, and aneurysm clipping. Preoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) identified a 5-mm aneurysm at the left M2-M3 junction. During surgery, neuronavigation was initially p…

Neurocognitive deficits in cognitive flexibility and visual-motor search among children with different epilepsy subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined neurocognitive deficits in Cognitive Flexibility (CF) and Visual-Motor Search (VMS) among children with Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE), Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE), and Non-Epileptic (NE) controls to inform subtype-specific interventions. METHODS: We assessed 90 children (30 FLE, 30 TLE, 30 NE; ages 7-12), matched on key demographics, using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to assess CF and Trail Making Tests (TMT-A/B) to evaluate VMS. Group differences were analyzed using MANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc comparisons. RESULTS: MANOVA revealed significant grou…

Delayed Pseudoprogression in Glioblastoma Patients Treated With Tumor-Treating Fields.

Tumor-treating fields (TTFields) is an established treatment modality for glioblastoma. False progression to chemoradiation is a known problem in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), with most cases occurring within three months of radiation therapy. In this report, we present two cases of delayed pseudoprogression caused by TTFields. Two patients with GBM who received TTFields showed signs of radiographic progression six months after the completion of radiation therapy. Patient 1 was a 37-year-old female with a glioblastoma in the right temporal lobe. Patient 2 was a 70-year-old male …
