Congenital amusia in speakers of a tone language: association with lexical tone agnosia.

Congenital amusia is a neurogenetic disorder that affects the processing of musical pitch in speakers of non-tonal languages like English and French. We assessed whether this musical disorder exists among speakers of Mandarin Chinese who use pitch to alter the meaning of words. Using the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia, we tested 117 healthy young Mandarin speakers with no self-declared musical problems and 22 individuals who reported musical difficulties and scored two standard deviations below the mean obtained by the Mandarin speakers without amusia. These 22 amusic individuals sho

Self-estimation of performance time versus actual performance time in older adults with suspected mild cognitive impairment: a clinical perspective.

BACKGROUND: Estimation of the passage of time has received marginal attention in contemporaneous psychiatric assessment and diagnosis. There is disagreement regarding the ability of older adults with dementia, particularly of the Alzheimers type, to estimate time passage, and there is lack of data concerning the ability of older adults in the early stages of cognitive impairment to estimate the passage of time. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the hypothesis that individuals with mild dementia perform worse compared to those with no cognitive impairment, and that those with mild cognitive impairmen

Influence of adenotonsillar hypertrophy on /s/-articulation in children--effects of surgery.

Tonsillar hypertrophy is common in young children and affects several aspects of the speech such as distortions of the dento-alveolar consonants. The study objective was to assess /s/-articulation, perceptually and acoustically, in children with tonsillar hypertrophy and compare effects of two types of surgery, total tonsillectomy and tonsillotomy. Sixty-seven children, aged 50-65 months, on the waiting list for surgery, were randomized to tonsillectomy or tonsillotomy. The speech material was collected preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Two groups of age-matched children were contro

Speech-feature discrimination in children with Asperger syndrome as determined with the multi-feature mismatch negativity paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Asperger syndrome, belonging to the autistic spectrum of disorders, involves deficits in social interaction and prosodic use of language but normal development of formal language abilities. Auditory processing involves both hyper- and hypoactive reactivity to acoustic changes. METHODS: Responses composed of mismatch negativity (MMN) and obligatory components were recorded for five types of deviations in syllables (vowel, vowel duration, consonant, syllable frequency, syllable intensity) with the multi-feature paradigm from 8-12-year old children with Asperger syndrome. RESULTS: Ch

Independence in the toilet activity in children and adolescents with myelomeningocele--managing clean intermittent catheterization in a hospital setting.

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify and describe gross motor, fine motor, executive and time-processing obstacles for independence in children with myelomeningocele who are treated with Clean Intermittent Catheterization and to relate their opinions about their performance in the toilet activity, and their medical records, to the observed outcome. METHODS: In a hospital setting, 22 children with myelomeningocele were observed using a structured information form while performing their toilet activity, and tested for time processing ability with the Ka-Tid instrument. RESULTS: Only five

Auditory processing in developmental dyslexia: an exploratory study of an auditory and visual matching training program with Swedish children with developmental dyslexia.

This study examined whether training using a nonverbal auditory-visual matching task had a remedial effect on reading skills in developmental dyslexia. The pretest/post-test design was used with Swedish children (N= 41), between the ages of 7 and 12. Training comprised twice-weekly sessions of 15 minutes, over eight weeks. There was an improvement in auditory-visual matching during the training period. There were also improvements in some reading test scores, especially in reading nonsense words and in reading speed. These improvements in tasks which are thought to rely on phonological process

Divided attention in youth-onset psychosis and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The authors used pupillary dilations to test whether divided attention deficits in youth-onset psychosis and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were because of limitations in recruitment of cognitive resources or abnormalities in attention allocation. Eight- to 19-year-olds with youth-onset psychosis or ADHD were administered a divided attention test consisting of an auditory digit span (DS) task and a simple visual response time (RT) task. In 4 conditions, participants performed neither (no task), 1 (DS or RT only), or both tasks (dual). Dependent variables were DS accuracy, RT,

Functional interplay between posterior parietal and ipsilateral motor cortex revealed by twin-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation during reach planning toward contralateral space.

Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has connections with motor and premotor cortex, thought to transfer information relevant for planning movements in space. We used twin-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (tcTMS) methods to show that the functional interplay between human right PPC and ipsilateral motor cortex (M1) varies with current motor plans. tcTMS during the reaction time of a reach task revealed facilitatory influences of right PPC on right M1 only when planning a (contralateral) leftward rather than rightward reach, at two specific time intervals (50 and 125 ms) after an auditory cue.

Sleep architecture, cocaine and visual learning.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in sleep associated with chronic cocaine use may underlie abstinence-related cognitive dysfunction. We hypothesized that sleep-related cognitive function would be impaired in chronic cocaine users, and that this impairment would be associated with abstinence-related changes in sleep architecture. METHODS: Twelve chronic cocaine users completed a 23-day in-patient study that included randomized, placebo-controlled, cocaine self-administration sessions. We report polysomnographic measurement of rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep and slow-wave activity, and performance on a

Neurophysiological responses to face, facial regions and objects in adults with Asperger's syndrome: an ERP investigation.

Face processing differences have been observed between AS and control subjects at the behavioural and neurological levels. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the neurophysiological basis of processing faces and facial features (eyes and mouths) in adults with AS relative to age- and gender-matched typically-developing controls. These results were compared with ERPs generated to objects in both groups to determine if any differences were specific to facial stimuli. Although both groups elicited earlier N170 latencies to faces than to face parts and to eyes relative to mouths, a

The relationship between fMRI adaptation and repetition priming.

Neuroimaging investigations of the cortically defined fMRI adaptation effect and of the behaviorally defined repetition priming effect have provided useful insights into how visual information is perceived and stored in the brain. Yet, although both phenomena are typically associated with reduced activation in visually responsive brain regions as a result of stimulus repetition, it is presently unknown whether they rely on common or dissociable neural mechanisms. In an event-related fMRI experiment, we manipulated fMRI adaptation and repetition priming orthogonally. Subjects made comparative s

A comparison of attentional biases and memory biases in women with social phobia and major depression.

Cognitive processes play an important role in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depression. Current theories differ, however, in their predictions regarding the occurrence of attentional biases and memory biases in depression and anxiety. To allow for a systematic comparison of disorders and cognitive processes, 117 women (35 with generalized social phobia, 27 with major depression, and 55 healthy controls) participated in a test of visual attention (visual search), an explicit memory test (free recall), and an implicit memory test (anagram solving). Both clinical groups exhibited at

Transient inactivation of perirhinal cortex disrupts encoding, retrieval, and consolidation of object recognition memory.

Damage to perirhinal cortex (PRh) impairs object recognition memory in humans, monkeys, and rats when tested in tasks such as delayed nonmatching to sample, visual paired comparison, and its rodent analog, the spontaneous object recognition task. In the present study, we have capitalized on the discrete one-trial nature of the spontaneous object recognition task to investigate the role of PRh in several distinct stages of object recognition memory. In a series of experiments, transient inactivation of PRh was accomplished with bilateral infusions of lidocaine directly into PRh immediately befo

Attentional blink differences between adolescent dyslexic and normal readers.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the possibility that dyslexic individuals require more working memory resources than normal readers to shift attention from stimulus to stimulus. To test this hypothesis, normal and dyslexic adolescents participated in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation experiment (Raymond, Shapiro, & Arnell, 1992). Surprisingly, the result showed that the participants with dyslexia produced a shallower attentional blink than normal controls. This result may be interpreted as showing differences in the way the two groups encode information in episodic memory. They also fi

Does a visual-orthographic deficit contribute to reading disability?

In this study, visual-orthographic skills were defined as the ability to recognize whether letters and numerals are correctly oriented. Aims were to investigate whether visual-orthographic skills would contribute independent variance to reading, and whether children with a visual-orthographic deficit would be more impaired readers than similar children without this deficit. Participants were 207 children, aged 8 to 10 years, who attended school in a small suburban community. Because of the evidence that phonological awareness and naming speed are strongly related to reading, visual-orthographi

Brain activity correlates differentially with increasing temporal complexity of rhythms during initialisation, synchronisation, and continuation phases of paced finger tapping.

Activity in parts of the human motor system has been shown to correlate with the complexity of performed motor sequences in terms of the number of limbs moved, number of movements, and number of trajectories. Here, we searched for activity correlating with temporal complexity, in terms of the number of different intervals produced in the sequence, using an overlearned tapping task. Our task was divided into three phases: movement selection and initiation (initiate), synchronisation of finger tapping with an external auditory cue (synchronise), and continued tapping in absence of the auditory p

Effects of focal basal ganglia lesions on timing and force control.

Studies of basal ganglia dysfunction in humans have generally involved patients with degenerative disorders, notably Parkinson's disease. In many instances, the performance of these patients is compared to that of patients with focal lesions of other brain structures such as the cerebellum. In the present report, we studied the performance of patients with focal basal ganglia lesions on three fundamental motor tasks. The patients all had suffered unilateral damage in the striatum and were tested in the chronic state. The first task required the participants to tap with their index finger as fa

Impaired detection of variable duration embedded tones in ectopic NZB/BINJ mice.

Utilizing rodent models, prior research has demonstrated a significant association between focal neocortical malformations (i.e. induced microgyria, molecular layer ectopias), which are histologically similar to those observed in human dyslexic brains, and rate-specific auditory processing deficits as seen in language impaired populations. In the current study, we found that ectopic NZB/BINJ mice exhibit significant impairments in detecting a variable duration 5.6 kHz tone embedded in a 10.5 kHz continuous background, using both acoustic reflex modification and auditory event-related potential

Bone-conducted sound lateralization of interaural time difference and interaural intensity difference in children and a young adult with bilateral microtia and atresia of the ears.

Bone-conducted sound lateralization tests to determine interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural intensity difference (IID) were conducted by means of a self-recording apparatus in 20 children and a young adult with bilateral microtia and atresia of the ear. This apparatus changes ITD automatically from 0 to 2,000 micros at 50 micros/s and IID from 1 to 40 dB at 1 dB's. When ITD exceeds approximately 200 micros/s and IID exceeds 5 dB in normal subjects the sounds are recognized separately. The test stimulus was a continuous narrow-band noise at 500 Hz and 30 dB SL applied to the right an
