[Tooth and jaw development in the Silver-Russel syndrome].

The symptoms of Silver-Russel syndrome are described using two cases. Special attention was paid to the development of the teeth and the jaws. The typical microretrognathism is accompanied by a frontal crowding especially in the lower jaw. It is possible to adjust it to a regular occlusion using functional orthopedic appliances. Noticeable is the high degree of caries in the first dentition. Paramorphiae are not ascertainable. Etiologically, the submucosal cleft palate, which was diagnosed for the first time, would suggest an intrauterine disturbance in the eighth to the tenth week of pregnanc

Dental findings in osteogenesis imperfecta: II. Dysplastic and other developmental defects.

Orthopantomograms of 49 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) classified according to Sillence were examined for dysplastic dentin defects and other developmental abnormalities of the teeth. Thistle-tube-shaped pulps in the permanent teeth were observed in five patients. Four of them had pulp stones in several teeth. Apically extended pulp chambers were present in 3/49 patients, and the structure of the mandible was cystic in 1/49. These defects occurred in patients with type I or unclassifiable OI and were mainly not associated with type I dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). The prevalence r

Oral signs and symptoms in the diagnosis of bulimia.

Bulimia is an eating disorder disease that presents difficulties in its diagnosis, primarily because of the secretive nature of the person with the disease. The disease is most common in young females, and there is an average of a 4-year delay between the onset of the disease and the patient's self-referral for treatment. Objective oral signs and symptoms of bulimia do exist and their presence can facilitate a diagnosis of bulimia during routine examination. The realization that five oral signs and symptoms of bulimia--enamel erosion, salivary gland enlargement, xerostomia, oral mucosal erythe

[Progressive ataxia and distal muscular atrophy--differential diagnostic considerations on Roussy-Lévy syndrome].

The Roussy-Lévy-Syndrome ist generally considered a pheno-typic variant of the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I (HMSN I), i.e. the classic Charcot-Marie-Tooth-neuropathy, and is thus nosographically distinguishable from Friedreich's ataxia. While posterior column symptomatology, dementia and rapid progression are recognized as diagnostic criteria for Friedreich's ataxia and HMSN I is clinically defined by the typical features of a progressive polyneuropathy, the symptom triad "gait disturbance, areflexia and pes cavus" of the Roussy-Lévy-Syndrome has comparatively little diagnost

Subepithelial connective tissue graft technique for root coverage.

This article describes the use of the subepithelial connective tissue graft as a donor source for root coverage. The success of these grafts has been attributed to the double-blood supply at the recipient site from the underlying connective tissue base and the overlying recipient flap. Four cases have been illustrated to demonstrate the versatility of this procedure for areas of single or multiple root coverage especially in the maxillary arch, coverage of existing crown margins and areas requiring a combination of ridge augmentation and root coverage. An increase of 2 to 6 mm of root coverage

Preoperative determination of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia.

A careful individual and family history is of utmost importance in evaluating MH susceptibility. Patients having myopathy with or without a significant family history of MH must be suspected of having the condition. The initial evaluation should include routine blood studies and CPK determinations in addition to an electrocardiogram. Full evaluation differentiating rigid from nonrigid types must include a muscle biopsy for microscopic and contraction studies. Platelet ATP depletion with exposure to halothane shows promise as a prescreening test. Susceptible patients can be given both general a

Periodontosis: a case report with scanning electron microscopic observations.

A tooth and associated periodontal tissues from a patient with the diagnosis of periodontosis was subjected to scanning electron microscopic evaluation after reflection of the soft tissue portion of the lingual defect. The cemental surface of the apical portion of the lesion was found to be populated by markedly similar rod-shaped organisms. The microorganisms were observed to be continuously present in a coronal-apical direction as the transition from cementum to the attached soft tissues at the base of the defect were examined. These findings provide additional evidence that the lesion of pe

Bovine fluorosis in Sweden.

Fluorotic lesions have been studied in cows and calves of SRB breed on farms belonging to 2 agricultural companies. From the one company (HP) in Dalecarlia 3 calves, 4 heifers and 2 cows were examined and from the other (B) in Södermanland 12 bull-calves. The submitted material consisted of a carcase from 1 dead calf and skull, metacarpus and in some cases kidneys from slaughtered animals. The fluorine content of feed and water samples was determined. In material from HP extensive enamel defects and strong wear were found in the deciduous incisors. Fluorotic lesions in calves have not been des
