The aim of this study was to develop a 2-stage evaluation and intervention program for control of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the hospital setting. The first stage included evaluation of MRSA prevalence throughout the entire hospital; the presence of MRSA was determined in patients or medical staff who had a high risk of carrying it (i.e. as a result of contact with surgical wounds). In the second stage, "contact isolation" (which included the use of gloves, hand washing before and after treatment of a patient and isolation of patients' personal belongings) was carrie

The incidence of tolerance and paradoxical response to bactericidal activity of penicillin was investigated in 50 clinical isolates of Enterococcus faecalis. Of the isolates tested, 86% exhibited the paradoxical phenomenon whereby there were more survivors at high than at low concentrations above the MIC. Low penicillin concentrations caused decreases equal to or higher than 99.9% in 11 strains, from 99.9 to 99.5% in 23 strains, and lower than 99.5% in 9 strains. Of the total strains, 14% were killed to the same extent by all concentrations above the MIC. The bactericidal activities of other b

A strict nutritional requirement for lipid and similar components of cell wall fatty acids and sugars are features common to both JK coryneforms (JK) that are resistant to multiple antibiotics and to lipophilic diphtheroids (LD) that are sensitive to antibiotics. We surveyed 123 subjects for LD and JK. Twenty-eight patients with leukemia (776 samples) were cultured longitudinally during 42 hospitalizations; 15 other patients hospitalized for at least two weeks and 80 controls were sampled once. JK were isolated from at least one of four skin sites in 82.1% of the leukemic patients, 73.3% of ot

Enterococci are major causes of both community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections. The rapid global dissemination of multidrug-resistant clones poses a major challenge to clinical management and infection control. The aim for the present study was to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance patterns, virulence genes, and molecular epidemiology of Enterococcus species isolated from clinical specimens in university hospitals of Sfax, Tunisia. A descriptive, hospital-based, cross-sectional surveillance study was conducted between March 2020 and February 2021. It included al

Waterborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pose mounting public health threats across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions dependent on untreated or poorly treated surface waters. This study applied shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterise microbial communities, virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water samples collected from Lake Victoria, River Wigwa, Dunga Water Treatment Plant, Nyalenda Wastewater Stabilisation Ponds and the tap water outlet in post-treatment supply pipe in Kisumu city (Kenya). Bacterial taxa dominated all

A cross-sectional study was carried out from November 2023 to May 2024 on lactating dairy cows in Maya city, in the eastern part of Ethiopia, with the aim of estimating mastitis prevalence, isolate Klebsiella pneumoniea and determine antibiotic resistance profiles of the isolates. A total of 281 animals were selected for screening of mastitis. The city was selected purposively, while kebeles, households/dairy farms, and dairy cows were chosen by the simple random sampling method. The California mastitis test (CMT) was used to screen for subclinical mastitis. Milk samples from CMT-positive and

Linezolid is a critical last-resort antimicrobial for multidrug-resistant Enterococcus faecium, particularly against vancomycin-resistant lineages where therapeutic options are severely limited. While resistance has historically arisen through de novo chromosomal mutations, the global emergence of transferable resistance mechanisms threatens to render more infections untreatable. Here, we characterize a recent (2023-2024) hospital-associated outbreak of linezolid-resistant E. faecium in Queensland, Australia. Although the cohort comprised a variety of sequence types, the outbreak was primarily

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) rank among the most prevalent bacterial infections globally. Traditional urine culture methods have significant limitations in detection time and sensitivity, prompting the need to evaluate targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) as a potential diagnostic tool.
METHODS: The study included a discovery cohort of 400 suspected UTI patients (202 analyzed) and a validation cohort of 200 patients (110 analyzed). The study assessed detection time, concordance rates, ability to identify polymicrobial infections, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Bo

Revealing the effects of reforestation on soil antibiotic resistome is essential for assessing ecosystem health, yet related studies remain scarce. Here, to determine the responses of the soil antibiotic resistome to reforestation, 30 pairs of cropland and forest soil samples were collected from southwestern China, a region with high environmental heterogeneity. All the forests had been derived from croplands more than one decade ago. The diversity and abundance of soil antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and pathogens were determi

There is an increasing concern about the role of animals as reservoirs of Clostridioides difficile. In this study, we investigated prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic potential of C. difficile in dogs. Two-hundred and twenty-five dog faecal deposits were collected from trashcans in nine public gardens. C. difficile was isolated using selective plating and enrichment culture, identified by MALDI-TOF, tested for susceptibility to seven antibiotics by E-test, and sequenced on an Illumina NextSeq platform. Genome sequences were analysed to determine multilocus sequence types and resi

The bacterial communities are challenged with oxidative stress during their exposure to bactericidal antibiotics, metals, and different levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) encountered in diverse environmental habitats. The frequency of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) co-selection is increased by selective pressure posed by oxidative stress. Hence, study of resistance acquisition is important from an evolutionary perspective. To understand the dependence of oxidative stress on the dissemination of ARGs and MRGs through a pathogenic bacterial population, 12 metag
