High-performance capillary electrophoresis is applied to the separation of different inorganic and organic arsenic and selenium compounds. In comparison with UV-detection, an approach with conductivity detection is described expecting higher sensitivity and universality. In this case the capillary was statically modified with CTAB before the electromigration procedure. The separation was performed with an electrolyte system consisting of CHES and Triton X-100. Detection limits of 0.06 mg/L or lower were obtained for As(V) and Se(VI). Water samples of an arsenic-polluted tailing of tin mining p

Tracing facility-level influences in urban rivers is challenging because complex contaminant mixtures limit discrimination of individual dischargers. Conventional bulk indicators provide limited source specificity, whereas high-resolution mass spectrometry nontarget analysis (HRMS-NTA) rarely incorporates river-network connectivity. Here, we developed an HRMS fingerprinting framework integrating feature prioritization, chemical fingerprints, directed source connectivity, non-negative least-squares decomposition, and facility discharge to trace wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) influences. Safe and clean water is a fundamental requirement for human health and well-being. Both the quantity and quality of drinking water directly affect population health, which makes the investigation of contaminants and their associated health risks a matter of growing scientific and public concern. Among the many waterborne contaminants, nitrate is of particular importance. It is a recalcitrant compound found in most water bodies, originating from both natural sources and anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and wastewater discharge. Numerous studies have attempted to evaluate the health

Approximately 1.6 million tons of conventional munitions were dumped in German coastal waters. Corrosion of munition shells facilitates the leakage of explosives, such as the toxic and carcinogenic 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), into the marine environment. Consequently, TNT contamination was detected in seawater, sediments, and marine organisms near munition dump sites, and is known to cause adverse effects in marine organisms. Accordingly, avoidance of contaminated areas would be advantageous for fish. We therefore hypothesized that fish respond to dissolved TNT and exhibit an avoidance reacti

Accumulation of Radon in groundwater from aquifer lithologies can pose significant health risks. This study investigates its concentration in coastal Alappuzha from the Kerala state in India to assess health risks from ingestion and inhalation in groundwater samples of both the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The activity(RAD7detector)in post-monsoon samples remained relatively higher (2.59-66.46 Bq/L; average:20.25 Bq/L) compared to the pre-monsoon (1.63-46.38 Bq/L; average: 13.78 Bq/L), reflecting the effect of precipitation on enhanced Radon contamination. However, the samples present

Sulfur packed-bed bioreactor (S0-PBR) for sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SADN) process exhibit significant potential for groundwater nitrate remediation owing to their cost-effectiveness. However, sulfide accumulation resulting from the sulfur autotrophic disproportionation (SADP) significantly limits its engineering application. In this work, synergistic regulation of a S0-PBR was achieved by controlling sulfur particle size and empty bed contact time (EBCT), enabling highly efficient ex situ nitrate removal from groundwater while significantly mitigating sulfur disproportionation. The s

Organic micropollutants (OMPs) compose a group of emerging contaminants that occur in environmental waters at trace concentrations (μg/L to ng/L) with suspected adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not designed to eliminate the more recalcitrant OMPs. As such, WWTP-effluents are a major source of OMPs in the aquatic environment, and sustainable advanced treatment options are required. One option concerns the biodegradation of OMPs, but several studies show that it might be constrained by the residual low energy content in effluent

Microplastics (MPs), widely distributed in marine environments, pose urgent ecological risks as emerging contaminants. However, current ecological risk assessments are largely based on the commercially produced MPs, which poorly represent in natural settings. Here, we simulated the natural aging of polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) using ultraviolet radiation (UV) and Fenton reactions, characterized the resultant physicochemical changes, and assessed their ecological toxicity in marine medaka larvae over a 30-day exposure experiment. Short-term aging via UV and Fenton reactions primarily altered the p

This study is the first to quantify the prevalence of microplastics in field-collected mosquito larvae across distinct species in Shiraz, Iran, and to assess potential bioaccumulation risks, providing insights into the ecological impacts of microplastics (MPs). Using a stratified sampling approach, 721 mosquito larvae were collected from six locations in Shiraz. The MPs were characterized by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, focusing on their quantity, size, morphology, and polymer type. Of the five representative mosquito species collected (Culex pipiens, Culiseta alaskaensis, Culex

Microplastics pose a growing threat to marine ecosystems as they can accumulate in aquatic organisms, interfering with essential physiological processes including reproduction. This study analyzed the effects of short-term exposure (48 h) to two concentrations (0.5 and 1 µg/mL) of 5 µm diameter polystyrene microplastic bead particles in female Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels, a bioindicator species of the Mediterranean Sea. Histological analyses revealed progressive oocyte degeneration and the development of hypertrophic PAS-positive mucous cells, indicative of a stress response, in a dose-d

Microplastics (MPs) act as reactive surfaces and carriers in aquatic systems, influencing the mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity of heavy metals. Recent research has clarified how heavy metals adsorb onto MPs, focusing on adsorption pathways, physicochemical factors, analytical methods, toxicological impacts, and remediation strategies. Metal binding to MPs depends on factors such as polymer type, particle size, aging, surface properties, zeta potential, pH, salinity, dissolved organic matter, temperature, and the presence of biofilms. Adsorption occurs through mechanisms including electr

Plastic ingestion is a well-established threat to wildlife, inducing a series of lethal and sublethal physiological consequences. Yet, in free-living populations, many of these health consequences remain effectively 'invisible' to conventional monitoring, making the development of a minimally invasive biomarker for plastic exposure a longstanding priority. To date, biomarker approaches have focused on detecting exposure (e.g., presence/absence of plastic additives/plasticisers) rather than identifying or classifying biological injury associated with plastic ingestion. Here, we evaluate whether

Imidacloprid (IMI), one of the most extensively used neonicotinoid insecticides, has become a widespread environmental contaminant owing to its high water solubility, persistence, and intensive agricultural applications. Its frequent detection in soil and aquatic environments has raised growing concerns because of its adverse effects on pollinators, aquatic organisms, wildlife, and potential risks to human health. Although numerous remediation technologies have been developed, existing reviews largely focus on individual treatment approaches and provide limited comparative evaluation of their

The co-contamination of antibiotics and nitrate has raised global concerns, as antibiotics exert an inhibitory effect on denitrification in the environment. However, the recovery potential of groundwater systems exposed to low antibiotic concentrations, especially at ng/L levels, remains underexplored. This study focused on lomefloxacin (LOM)-a contaminant frequently detected in groundwater-and investigated denitrification recovery dynamics within 58 days following acute exposure to LOM via batch experiments. The results indicated that, in comparison to the carbon source, the impact of LOM at g

While Desulfovibrio vulgaris UR1 demonstrates efficient U(VI) reduction under anaerobic conditions, its application has remained largely confined to laboratory-scale investigations. To address this limitation, this study integrates laboratory mechanistic analysis with field-scale bioaugmentation, bridging microscopic insights with macroscopic validation for the remediation of U(VI)-contaminated aquifers. Batch and simulated groundwater experiments demonstrated that quartz sand served as a matrix to promote biofilm growth and EPS secretion, which enhanced U(VI) reduction efficiency by ∼40 % and

High salmonid toxicity of 6PPD-quinone, a transformation product of the tire antioxidant 6PPD, has accelerated the search for safer tire alternatives. We evaluated the toxicity of the quinone transformation products of two candidate alternatives, 7PPD-quinone (7PPD-Q) and 77PD-quinone (77PD-Q), in zebrafish (Danio rerio) early life stages. Embryos and sac-fry were exposed to these chemicals under OECD Test Guideline 212 conditions. Endpoints included 8-day survival, hatching, heartbeat, eye and head sizes, body length, morphological deformities, and yolk-sac pigmentation. The results showed th

Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to seabirds, yet the relationship between plastics and molluscivorous species remains severely understudied despite high risk of exposure to plastics in sediments and contaminated prey. As coastal benthic environments are hotspots for plastic contamination, seaducks that dive and forage on mollusks (predominantly benthic bivalves and gastropods) in coastal habitats may be particularly vulnerable. This study presents the first assessment of plastic contamination in two molluscivorous seaducks: Black Scoters (Melanitta americana) and Stejneger's Scoters (

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant that biomagnifies along marine food chains, particularly exposing top predators such as seabirds through their diet. Bass Strait, in southeastern Australia, is one of the fastest warming oceanic regions on the planet and is influenced by several currents that create a highly variable physical and biological environment. Here, we studied the feather and blood Hg concentrations in two Procellariiformes species, the common diving petrel (Pelecanoides urinatrix) and the fairy prion (Pachyptila turtur) over four breeding seasons with different environmental condi
