We report the effects of CBS-211 A, a synthetic retinoic acid analog, on a previously described experimental model of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in the rabbit. A 9-week topical treatment with 0.02% CBS-211 A in aqueous vehicle significantly increased the conjunctival goblet cell density (P less than 0.01, impression cytology counting), stopped the evolution of the corneo-conjunctival surface alteration (P less than 0.05, rose bengal test), and restored a basically normal mucosecretory product quality in goblet cells (lectin histochemistry) compared to vehicle treatment. In 33 patients with erectile dysfunction arterial inflow was measured by Doppler-sonography over the superficial dorsal and deep cavernous arteries in the proximal section after local application of 1.6 mg glycerol trinitrate (nitroglycerin) to the glans penis. With this test we were able to reveal a minimal increases in maximal systolic flow over both arteries at 29/66 measurement sites. This is thus an easier way of localizing penile vessels in the flaccid state. In no case did we see tumescence or rigidity.

Cyromazine, a triazine insecticide, was used as a pour-on preparation to prevent blowfly myiasis in sheep kept in pairs of neighbouring farms in two locations. In 1987 one of the farms in each location used conventional dipping with a diazinon dip while the other used the pour-on treatment. Both systemic and topical application of ketoconazole (CAS 65277-42-1) have been found effective in seborrhoeic dermatitis. Plasters containing methyl salicylate with and without l-menthol and dl-camphor were prepared and topically applied on hairless mouse skin to investigate the effects of l-menthol and dl-camphor on the skin penetration and hydrolysis of methyl salicylate in the skin. The in vitro hydrolysis of methyl salicylate was also investigated using the skin homogenate. It was found that l-menthol with dl-camphor enhanced the skin penetration of methyl salicylate, and they inhibited both the in vivo and in vitro hydrolysis of methyl salicylate to salicylic acid.

We describe an elderly man who was admitted with congestive cardiac failure and found to have thyrotoxicosis. He did not have goiter, and he had normal radioiodine uptake in his neck. Serum iodine levels were elevated, explaining the lack of increase in radioiodine uptake in the thyroid gland. Photoprotective effect of topically applied superoxide dismutase (SOD) to guinea pig skin was compared with a commercially available sunscreen agent after a single exposure to UVB. While cutaneous SOD activity was remarkably decrease in non-treated control animals, both topical SOD and sunscreen agent significantly reduced the decrease in skin SOD activity after UVB irradiation. Using a reproducible model of Candida albicans keratitis in rabbits we studied the effect of topical fluconazole, a new triazole. Candida albicans DSM 70010 (2.5 X 10(5) cells) was injected into the corneal stroma of both eyes of 21 rabbits. All eyes developed a corneal ulcer.
