Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a painful orthopedic malformation diagnosed at birth in 1-3% of all newborns. Left untreated, DDH can lead to significant morbidity including long-term disability. Currently the condition is clinically diagnosed using 2-D ultrasound (US) imaging acquired between 0 and 6 mo of age. DDH metrics are manually extracted by highly trained radiologists through manual measurements of relevant anatomy from the 2-D US data, which remains a time-consuming and highly error-prone process. Recently, it was shown that combining 3-D US imaging with deep learning-bas

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter cardiac interventions in congenital heart disease require a precise understanding of 3-dimensional (3D) anatomical structures represented through projectional angiograms. However, intraprocedural optimization of angiograms is limited by the need to reduce exposure to radiation and nephrogenic contrast. Preprocedural optimization using 3D images has the potential to improve patient outcomes and trainee education. We sought to simulate fluoroscopic projections from 3D computed tomography images within an integrated procedural planning framework with the goal of informin

Variations in the aortic arch and abdominal aorta possess important clinical implications that are frequently overlooked or underestimated, often being identified incidentally during surgical interventions or post-mortem examinations. This case report describes the rare concurrent occurrence of two such anomalies: an aberrant origin of the left vertebral artery and an anomalous origin of the left gastric artery. These findings were made during routine anatomical dissection of a 77-year-old white female cadaver at the Clinical Anatomy Laboratory of Sam Houston State University College of Osteop

Formerly termed sports hernia or athletic pubalgia, core muscle injury (CMI) encompasses abnormality of structures within the so-called core, which is essentially the hip, abdomen, and pubis. Compared with data on image-guided procedures of other joints, information regarding procedures performed to address CMI and other disorders of the pubic symphysis is lacking. These procedures can be daunting given the joint's small size, surrounding critical neurovascular structures, and three-dimensional anatomy. Nonetheless, various diagnostic and therapeutic image-guided interventions in this region c

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanisms for why certain patients with massive cuff tears develop pseudoparesis are unclear. A recent biomechanical study described the Shoulder Abduction Moment (SAM) index, which considers the deltoid and rotator cuff moment arms based on a patient's specific anatomy as measured on a plain XR Grashey view. The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the correlation of pseudoparesis with the SAM index in patients with massive cuff tears.
METHODS: This was a single surgeon retrospective study of 105 patients presenting with magnetic resonance imaging-diag

INTRODUCTION: Sacroiliac joint syndrome (SIJS) is an important cause of lower back pain, constituting a common source of morbidity, especially in today's ageing population. Underlying pathophysiology is complex and likely multifactorial. Previous studies have suggested characteristic morphologies of the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) shape in pain patients.
AIM: To find morphological markers for SIJS in vivo by evaluating an extensive array of, particularly anatomical, measurements of the SIJ, pelvis and associated musculature using computed tomography (CT) by comparison with non-SIJS control patient

Background Copeland resurfacing hemiarthroplasty (CRHA) was developed as a bone-preserving alternative to stemmed hemiarthroplasty, offering advantages such as preservation of native anatomy and quicker recovery. However, there is limited evidence regarding its long-term survivorship. Objective The objective of this study is to determine the medium- to long-term survival outcomes and functional results of CRHA performed in a single-surgeon series. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent CRHA between 2007 and 2013 at King's Mill Hospital, Mansfield, UK. Ther

PURPOSE: Alignment strategies in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have predominantly emphasized coronal alignment in extension, with minimal focus on dynamic alignment during flexion. This study aims to identify the predictors of the intraoperative robotic hip-knee-ankle angle at 90° of flexion (rHKA-90F) and assess its clinical significance in postoperative outcomes, proposing that rHKA-90F may be a critical factor in enhancing functional results in TKA.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 180 patients with varus deformity undergoing robotic-assisted TKA under the functional alig

BACKGROUND/AIM: Iliac screws provide strong caudal anchorage for both long spinal fusions as well as short lumbopelvic fixations. However, anatomic based placement can be challenging, and complication rates are often underestimated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed 47 iliac screws being placed in 24 patients. Using postoperative computed tomography (CT), iliac screw placement was analysed with reference to anatomic landmarks. Iliac narrowings were described with regard to their relevance for iliac screw placement. Moreover, we analyzed clinical records for clinical complications. The latter

BACKGROUND: The periarticular ligament anatomy of the scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) joint varies in the literature, complicating standardization. Preservation of this ligamentous array is critical in preventing intracarpal malalignment.
PURPOSE: This study aims to map ligament insertion sites on the bony components of the STT joint and define resection margins for the scaphoid, trapezium, and trapezoid during arthroplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 26 cadaveric wrists. Needles marked the STT joint before arthrotomy, allowing precise observation of ligament positioning intact. Ligame

Valgus-producing high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is a treatment for medial compartment knee osteoarthritis. There has been much debate about which type of osteotomy is the "best." Many techniques, including medial opening-wedge, lateral closing-wedge, dome, and chevron-type osteotomies, have proven track records, with survival rates free of conversion to total knee replacement ranging from 85% to 93% at 8 years or more in some series. One of the main drawbacks to medial opening-wedge HTO is the effect on tibial slope and patellar height. These osteotomies tend to open more in the anterior aspect o

PURPOSE: To determine the biochemical recurrence (BCR)-related pelvic anatomic characteristics before radical prostatectomy (RP) and to establish a new predictive model for BCR-free survival (BCRFS).
METHODS: The study involved 170 patients who underwent RP between January 2015 and December 2022. Kaplan-Meier plots were applied to estimate survival probabilities. Multivariate Cox regression models were employed to identify predictors for BCRFS, which were subsequently incorporated into an MRI-based nomogram to visualize the model. The Harrell's concordance index (C-index) was employed to eval

The origin and evolution of snakes has been marked by the acquisition of many morphological and functional novelties, one of which is the possession of a highly kinetic skull allowing for the consumption of prey that are often larger than their head diameter. One feature of the iconic wide gape of macrostomate (large-mouthed) snakes is due to changes in the rostral midline where the left and right hemi-mandible come together. Across vertebrates, the two sides of the lower jaw are held together by the mandibular symphysis. In snakes, the two halves of the lower jaw do not fuse and the symphysis
