Effects of warm-season feeding on yak growth, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and fecal microbiota.

The yak (Bos grunniens) is of great importance to the local ecosystem and animal husbandry on the Tibetan Plateau. However, the impacts of different feeding practices on yak growth, health, and ecosystem interactions are not fully understood. This study investigates the effects of warm-season grazing and housing-feeding on yak growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function, metabolome, and fecal microbiota. The study found that grazing significantly increased the final body weight and average daily gain of yak (P < 0.05), reduced serum globulin and urea nitrogen levels, and elevated

Old world camels in Germany: parasitic nematode communities characterized by nemabiome analysis showed reduced anthelmintic efficacy according to the fecal egg count reduction test.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal nematodes pose a significant health risk to grazing livestock and cause economic losses, which are further increased by anthelmintic resistance. This study examined the gastrointestinal parasite fauna of Old World Camels (OWCs) in Germany and evaluated the efficacy of anthelmintic treatment. METHODS: In total, nine German OWC-keeping farms that dewormed their stock in spring 2023 were examined. The farms with their veterinarians independently selected the drug for treatment. The number of strongyle eggs per gram (EPG) feces was determined in 107 OWCs, Camelus bact

Age dictates brain functional connectivity and axonal integrity following repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries in mice.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) present a major public health challenge, demanding an in-depth understanding of age-specific symptoms and risk factors. Aging not only significantly influences brain function and plasticity but also elevates the risk of hospitalizations and death following TBIs. Repetitive mild TBIs (rmTBI) compound these issues, resulting in cumulative and long-term brain damage in the brain. In this study, we investigate the impact of age on brain network changes and white matter properties following rmTBI by employing a multi-modal approach that integrates resting-state functi

Long-term persistence of diverse clones shapes the transmission landscape of invasive Listeria monocytogenes.

BACKGROUND: The foodborne bacterium Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) causes a range of diseases, from mild gastroenteritis to invasive infections that have high fatality rate in vulnerable individuals. Understanding the population genomic structure of invasive Lm is critical to informing public health interventions and infection control policies that will be most effective especially in local and regional communities. METHODS: We sequenced the whole draft genomes of 936 Lm isolates from human clinical samples obtained in a two-decade active surveillance program across 58 counties in New York State

Differential gene expression and identification of growth-related genes in the pituitary gland of South African goats.

Growth and carcass quality are economically important traits in goat production. This study investigated differentially expressed genes from the caprine pituitary gland transcriptome of South African indigenous goat breeds of varying growth performances and carcass quality parameters. Tissues were harvested from the pituitary gland of three South African Boer goats and three village ecotype goats all raised under similar conditions simulating intensive commercial production systems. Three additional tissues were harvested from village ecotype goats that were raised extensively on village farms

Tick Microbiomes in Neotropical Forest Fragments Are Best Explained by Tick-Associated and Environmental Factors Rather than Host Blood Source.

The composition of tick microbiomes varies both within and among tick species. Whether this variation is intrinsic (related to tick characteristics) or extrinsic (related to vertebrate host and habitat) is poorly understood but important, as microbiota can influence the reproductive success and vector competence of ticks. We aimed to uncover what intrinsic and extrinsic factors best explain the microbial composition and taxon richness of 11 species of neotropical ticks collected from eight species of small mammals in 18 forest fragments across central Panama. Microbial richness varied among ti

Mycobacterium bovis Infection in Red Foxes in Four Animal Tuberculosis Endemic Areas in France.

In France, animal tuberculosis (TB) due to Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) affects a multi-host community that include cattle and wildlife species such as wild boars (Sus scrofa), badgers (Meles meles), or wild deer (Cervus elaphus, Capreolus capreolus). The involvement of foxes in the epidemiology of TB is fairly described in countries facing multispecies concerns. After the discovery of grouped cases of TB in foxes in a French TB endemic region, a study was implemented in the core of four TB endemic areas in Dordogne, Charente, Landes (departments of Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), and Côte-d'Or

Mini-FLOTAC as an alternative, non-invasive diagnostic tool for Schistosoma mansoni and other trematode infections in wildlife reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and food-borne trematodiases are not only of major public health concern, but can also have profound implications for livestock production and wildlife conservation. The zoonotic, multi-host nature of many digenean trematodes is a significant challenge for disease control programmes in endemic areas. However, our understanding of the epidemiological role that animal reservoirs, particularly wild hosts, may play in the transmission of zoonotic trematodiases suffers a dearth of information, with few, if any, standardised, reliable diagnostic tests available. We combin

Vaccine Protection against Multidrug-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in a Nonhuman Primate Model of Severe Lower Respiratory Tract Infection.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a human gut communal organism and notorious opportunistic pathogen. The relative high burden of asymptomatic colonization by K. pneumoniae is often compounded by multidrug resistance-a potential problem for individuals with significant comorbidities or other risk factors for infection. A carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae strain classified as multilocus sequence type 258 (ST258) is widespread in the United States and is usually multidrug resistant. Thus, treatment of ST258 infections is often difficult. Inasmuch as new preventive and/or therapeutic measures are needed

New Variant of Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium Associated with Invasive Disease in Immunocompromised Patients in Vietnam.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS), particularly Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, is among the leading etiologic agents of bacterial enterocolitis globally and a well-characterized cause of invasive disease (iNTS) in sub-Saharan Africa. In contrast, S Typhimurium is poorly defined in Southeast Asia, a known hot spot for zoonotic disease with a recently described burden of iNTS disease. Here, we aimed to add insight into the epidemiology and potential impact of zoonotic transfer and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in S Typhimurium associated with iNTS and enterocolitis in Vietnam. We performe

Association between oxidative status and the composition of intestinal microbiota along the gastrointestinal tract.

Studies have shown that the microbiota along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays an important role when it comes to the maintenance of its proper functions. Many studies exist that have analyzed the composition of the bacterial community in the different regions of the GIT of humans and model animals. Microbial imbalance leads to several systemic disorders, including cardiovascular and renal disease. The imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their elimination by antioxidants leads to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress plays an important role in a variety of p

Host associations and genomic diversity of Borrelia hermsii in an endemic focus of tick-borne relapsing fever in western North America.

BACKGROUND: An unrecognized focus of tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia hermsii was identified in 2002 when five people became infected on Wild Horse Island in Flathead Lake, Montana. The terrestrial small mammal community on the island is composed primarily of pine squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), neither of which was known as a natural host for the spirochete. Thus a 3-year study was performed to identify small mammals as hosts for B. hermsii. METHODS: Small mammals were captured alive on two island and three mainland sites, blood sample

The role of nitric oxide in bladder urothelial injury after bladder outlet obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of injury to the bladder mucosa after bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The response of bladder mucosa to BOO consists of thickening with fibrous connective tissue; NO is a multipurpose messenger important in blood vessel relaxation, neuronal communication and inflammatory activities of macrophages, and is synthesized by NO synthase (NOS), with three distinct isoforms; inducible (iNOS), endothelial (eNOS) and neuronal (nNOS). Fifteen male guinea pigs had a silk ligature placed around the bladder

A superantigen-antibody fusion protein for T-cell immunotherapy of human B-lineage malignancies.

The bacterial superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is an efficient activator of cytotoxic T cells when presented on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules of target cells. Our previous studies showed that such SEA-directed T cells efficiently lysed chronic B-lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) cells. Next, we made a mutated SEA-protein A (SEAm-PA) fusion protein with more than 1,000-fold reduced binding affinity for MHC class II compared with native SEA. The fusion protein was successfully used to direct T cells to B-CLL cells coated with different B lineage-directed mon

NGF augmentation rescues trigeminal ganglion and principalis neurons, but not brainstem or cortical whisker patterns, after infraorbital nerve injury at birth.

Prior studies indicate that neonatal nerve injury kills many trigeminal (V) first- and second-order cells, and interrupts pattern formation in the brainstem and cerebral cortex. Yet it is not known whether effects upon cell survival and pattern formation are causally related. To determine whether axotomized V ganglion cells can be rescued by an exogenous trophic agent, rats received 5 mg/kg of nerve growth factor (NGF) prior to, and every day after, infraorbital nerve section on the day of birth until sacrifice on postnatal day (PND) 1, 3, 5, 7, or 14. Other animals received identical lesions

Prosaposin orchestrates a TGFβ1-driven paracrine loop between Schwann cells and gastric cancer to accelerate perineural invasion.

Perineural invasion (PNI) is an established adverse prognostic factor in gastric cancer (GC), yet the molecular events initiating this process remain poorly defined. In this study, we identify Schwann cells (SCs) as active facilitators of PNI and elucidate a reciprocal signaling axis between GC cells and SCs that promotes PNI. Using a GC–SCs co-culture model, we show that SCs enhance PNI potential in GC cells, accompanied by increased expression of prosaposin (PSAP), a lysosomal secretory protein, in both co-cultured cells and PNI-positive tumor specimens. Mechanistic studies reveal that PSAP

Spatially resolved transcriptomics identifies intercellular signaling post-ischemic stroke that controls neural stem cell proliferation.

Ischemic stroke mobilizes adult neural stem cells (NSCs), which could be leveraged for recovery. However, the intercellular signals that activate NSCs are poorly understood. Cells located in the cerebral lesion may send signals to the NSC niche to initiate the regenerative responses. Here, we computationally inferred cell-cell communication between the ischemic infarct region and ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) NSC niche from spatial gene expression profiles and identified ligand-receptor pairs in the signal transduction events at three time points. Further, we detailed the regulatory
