Transient dysautonomia in an acute phase of encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a dysautonomic condition that is associated with various types of acquired brain injuries. Tra … itoring of electroencephalograms ruled out the recurrent attacks of seizures. The abnormal signs of autonomic nervous system gradually ceased and never relapsed after recovery from the hypothermia. PSH or a transient condition of dysautonomia may emerge and persist during the acute phase of AESD.

Birth Weight and Its Relationship with the Cardiac Autonomic Balance in Healthy Children.

Several studies indicate that the fetal environment plays a significant role in the development of cardiometabolic disease later in life. However, a few studies present conflicting data about the correlation between birth weight and the impairment of cardiac autonomic modulation. The purpose of the present study was to provide further knowledge to elucidate this contradictory relationship. One hundred children aged 5 and 14 years had anthropometric parameters, body composition and blood pressure levels determined. Heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated by heart rate monitoring, including m

Classification of ictal and seizure-free HRV signals with focus on lateralization of epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Epileptic onsets often affect the autonomic function of the body during a seizure, whether it is in ictal, interictal or post-ictal periods. The different effects of localization and lateralization of seizures on heart rate variability (HRV) emphasize the importance of autonomic function changes in epileptic patients. On the other hand, the detection of seizures is of primary interests in evaluating the epileptic patients. In the current paper, we analyzed the HRV signal to develop a reliable offline seizure-detection algorithm to focus on the effects of lateralization on HRV. MATE

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity in severe traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a less-known complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study was done to assess the clinical features and outcome of patients who develop PSH following severe TBI. METHODS: A prospective observational study was done on patients, admitted in the intensive care unit, for treatment of severe TBI. The clinical characteristics and outcome of patients, with and without PSH, was compared. At the time of discharge, patients were assessed with the Disability Rating Scale (DRS), and at 6 months with the Glasgow Outcome Score Extended (G

ANESTHETIC MANAGEMENT OF FEMORAL FRACTURE REPAIR IN A PATIENT WITH CERVICAL MYELOPATHY, AUTONOMIC DYSFUNCTION, AND DIFFICULT AIRWAY.

Spinal stenosis is a potentially serious condition that can lead to myelopathies and autonomic instability, both of which, as a result, may complicate anesthetic management. Additionally, neuraxial anesthesia appears to increase the risk of worsened neurological outcomes in this population. A 56-year-old female with spinal stenosis, autonomic dysfunction, and known difficult airway who required anesthesia for repair of a femur fracture is presented. After pre-operative arterial line and femoral block placement, an ultrasound guided subarachnoid block was safely placed. This supports the notion

Heart rate variability across the menstrual cycle in young women taking oral contraceptives.

Previous studies have shown that resting heart rate variability (HRV) is modified by different phases of the menstrual cycle in nonusers of oral contraceptive pills (OCP); however, the effect of OCP on autonomic control of the heart remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate HRV during the low hormone (LH-not taking OCP) and during the high hormone (HH-active OCP use) phases of the menstrual cycle in young women. Seventeen healthy women (19-31 years) taking OCP for at least 6 consecutive months were enrolled in this study. Plasma estradiol and progesterone were verified at e

The role of wearable sensors and wireless technologies for the assessment of heart rate variability in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Bradycardia and abnormal cardiac autonomic function are related to increased mortality in anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of this study was to assess heart rate (HR) and HR variability of young adolescents with AN as compared to controls by means of wearable sensors and wireless technologies. METHOD: The ECG signal was recorded in 27 AN girls and 15 healthy girls at rest using a wearable chest strap. The tachogram, the mean intervals between R peaks (meanRR), the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), the power of low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands and the L

Developmental differences in the effects of alcohol and stress on heart rate variability.

Adolescent rats differ in their responses to stress and ethanol from their adult counterparts, although not much is known about the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to these differences. This study assessed the impact of stress, ethanol, and their combination on parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) in adolescent and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were habituated to the testing box and neck sensors (MouseOX, STARR Life Sciences Corp.) used for recording heart rate (HR). After 8-10min of baseline recording, animals were restrained for 90min or returned home, foll…

Migraine and cranial autonomic symptoms in children and adolescents: a clinical study.

The frequency of cranial autonomic symptoms in children affected by primary headaches is uncertain. The aim of our study was to estimate the frequency of symptoms in pediatric headaches and correlate it with main migraine characteristics. A questionnaire investigating the presence of cranial autonomic symptoms was administered to all children with primary headache for 2 years. A total of 230 children with primary headache (105 males, 125 females) were included. Two hundred two children were affected by migraine and 28 (12.2%) by other primary headaches. Cranial autonomic symptoms were signific

Control of breathing and the circulation in high-altitude mammals and birds.

Hypoxia is an unremitting stressor at high altitudes that places a premium on oxygen transport by the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Phenotypic plasticity and genotypic adaptation at various steps in the O2 cascade could help offset the effects of hypoxia on cellular O2 supply in high-altitude natives. In this review, we will discuss the unique mechanisms by which ventilation, cardiac output, and blood flow are controlled in high-altitude mammals and birds. Acclimatization to high altitudes leads to some changes in respiratory and cardiovascular control that increase O2 transport in h

Normal reactions to orthostatic stress in Rett syndrome.

The aim of this study was to investigate orthostatic reactions in females with Rett syndrome (RTT), and also whether the severity of the syndrome had an impact on autonomic reactions. Based on signs of impaired function of the central autonomic system found in RTT, it could be suspected that orthostatic reactions were affected. The orthostatic reactions in 21 females with RTT and 14 normally developed females matched by age were investigated when they rose from a sitting position, and during standing for 3 min. Reactions of the heart, the blood pressure and the time for recovery of systolic bl

[Neuropathy in the gut. Gastrointestinal motility disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus].

The extent and severity of motility disorders remains heterogeneous in the different parts of the gut, and in most cases failures in gut motility do not correspond with the severity of the symptoms. If diarrhea or fecal incontinence is the leading symptom, or the blood glucose level varies frequently and considerably despite the treatment efforts, the motility of the stomach and bowels is seriously disturbed. The clinical aspects, detailed pathogenesis, diagnostic approach and treatment modalities of gastrointestinal motility disorders in diabetes mellitus are reviewed to help and improve the

Angiotensinergic innervation of the kidney: Localization and relationship with catecholaminergic postganglionic and sensory nerve fibers.

We describe an angiotensin (Ang) II-containing innervation of the kidney. Cryosections of rat, pig and human kidneys were investigated for the presence of Ang II-containing nerve fibers using a mouse monoclonal antibody against Ang II (4B3). Co-staining was performed with antibodies against synaptophysin, tyrosine 3-hydroxylase, and dopamine beta-hydroxylase to detect catecholaminergic efferent fibers and against calcitonin gene-related peptide to detect sensory fibers. Tagged secondary antibodies and confocal light or laser scanning microscopy were used for immunofluorescence detection. Ang I

The rise of hemodialysis machines: new technologies in minimizing cardiovascular complications.

Hemodialysis (HD) is a life-saving treatment for more than 1,700,000 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage V. Every year the HD population becomes increasingly older (average age: 75 years) and more ill due to the associated comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease (heart failure, coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease), diabetes, hypertension and peripheral vascular disease. Most of the complications associated with HD involve the cardiovascular system. HD machines have been greatly improved over the last 30 years. We have moved from HD machines simply allowing
