[Study on the antibacterial activity of ginkgolic acids].

In this article we studied the anti-bacterial activity of the extract from testa of Ginkgo biloba and ginkgolic acids. They can inhibit the growth of Staphylocococus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus and MRSA. Ginkgolic acids combined with peniciline can enhance their inhibitory activity to MRSA.

Rapid Capsular Antigen Immunoassay for Diagnosis of Inhalational Anthrax: Preclinical Studies and Evaluation in a Nonhuman Primate Model.

Inhalational anthrax is a fatal infectious disease. Rapid and effective treatment is critically dependent on early and accurate diagnosis. B … vitro testing showed that the test was equally sensitive with cultures of the three major clades of Bacillus anthracis. Cultures from other Bacillus spp. that are known to produce γDPGA also produced positive results. The test was negative with human sera from 200 normal subjects and 45 subjects with culture-confirmed nonanthrax bacterial or fungal sepsis. …

Could BCG be used to protect against COVID-19?

Nearly 100 years since it was first used in humans as a vaccine for tuberculosis, Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) has been suggested as a possible agent to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A number of studies are underway to investigate this possibility but — even if they prove effective — many questions will remain.

Small molecule inhibitors of anthrax lethal factor toxin.

This manuscript describes the preparation of new small molecule inhibitors of Bacillus anthracis lethal factor. Our starting point was the symmetrical, bis-quinolinyl compound 1 (NSC 12155). Optimization of one half of this molecule led to new LF inhibitors that were desymmetrized to afford more drug-like compounds.

Side effects of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in the treatment of intermediate- and high-risk Ta, T1 papillary carcinoma of the bladder: results of the EORTC genito-urinary cancers group randomised phase 3 study comparing one-third dose with full dose and 1 year with 3 years of maintenance BCG.

BACKGROUND: Although bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has proven highly effective in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), but it can cause severe local and systemic side effects. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to determine whether reducing the dose or duration of BCG was associated with fewer side effects. Efficacy comparisons of one-third dose versus full dose BCG given for 1 yr versus 3 yr have previously been published. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: After transurethral resection, patients with intermediate- and high-risk NMIBC without carcinoma in situ were randomised to one-thir…

Gel green fluorescence ssDNA aptasensor based on carbon nanotubes for detection of anthrax protective antigen.

Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, is a harmful pathogen with potential ability as a biological weapon which persuades scientists to develop novel methods to detect anthrax from infected resources. In this study, a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)-based fluorescence aptasensor was fabricated to detect the recombinant protective antigen domain 4 (rPAD4) of Bacillus anthracis as the most important key factor in development of anthrax. First, PAD4 was recombinant expressed in E. coli and purified by Ni-NTA column. Second, the affinity of aptamer to rPAD4 was confirmed by ELA…

Genetically programmed autoinducer destruction reduces virulence gene expression and swarming motility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1.

Virulence in the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is controlled by cell density via diffusible signalling molecules ('autoinducers') of the N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) type. Two Bacillus sp. isolates (A23 and A24) with AHL-degrading activity were identified among a large collection of rhizosphere bacteria. From isolate A24 a gene was cloned which was similar to the aiiA gene, encoding an AHL lactonase in another Bacillus strain. Expression of the aiiA homologue from isolate A24 in P. aeruginosa PAO1 reduced the amount of the quorum sensing signal N-oxododecanoyl-L-homoser…

Anthrax.

Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, an encapulated and spore-forming bacillus. The disease is usually contracted through uptake of spores that remain viable in the contaminated soil for many years. Anthrax is primarily a disease of herbivorous animals and is uncommon in humans who may get the infection through contact with contaminated animals or their products. Anthrax spores germinate after entering the body through skin abrasions (cutaneous anthrax) or by inhalation (inhalation anthrax) or ingestion (gastrointestinal anthrax) and multiply to produce two exotoxins which determine the vi…

A comparison of the growth of selected mycobacteria in HeLa, monkey kidney, and human amnion cells in tissue culture.

HeLa, monkey kidney, and human amnion cells in tissue cultures were compared as sites for the multiplication of strains of tubercle bacilli or original and reduced pathogenicity, and for several other species of mycobacteria capable of causing disease in humans. The arrangement of the pathogenic species inorder of their growth rates in HeLa cells was Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium balnei, and the "yellow bacillus," followed closely by the tubercle bacillus. This order was also correct for these species in monkey kidney and human amnion cells, and is the same as that seen in bacteriolog…

Case for diagnosis.

Hansen's disease is a chronic infecto-contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The bacillus prefers low-temperature areas and the nose is usually the initial site of lesions. Transmission of the bacilli occurs by nasal and oropharyngeal secretions, and through solutions of continuity of the skin and/or mucosae. Nasal manifestations are found in the later stages of the disease.
