The role of iron in Ni-Fe binary catalysts for electrochemical glycerol oxidation.

NiFe binary compounds have shown great potential in the electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived glycerol towards valuable products. However, understanding the role of Fe on the glycerol oxidation process of Ni-based catalysts remains challenging due to the complex multi-alcohol-group oxidation. Herein, our systematic study identifies that Fe can improve both the dynamic process of Ni(OH)2 transformation into active NiOOH and the kinetic process of redox reaction between NiOOH and glycerol. Specifically, the introduction of Fe can significantly reduce the onset potential of glycerol oxida…

Heterogeneous distributions of black carbon in sediments from three Asian mangrove wetlands.

Black carbon (BC) is produced by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels and plays an important role in global climate change and carbon cycling. Mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes are collectively recognized as the three major blue carbon systems. However, research on BC in mangroves remains limited. We investigated mangrove sediments from three regions, Hong Kong (HK), Guangxi (GX), and Bangladesh (BD). Using Chemical Thermal Oxidation (CTO-375) and Benzene Polycarboxylic Acids (BPCA) analytical methods, along with elemental analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and M…

Reverse-Engineered Gas-Fermenting Acetogen Strains Recover Enhanced Phenotypes From Autotrophic Adaptive Laboratory Evolution.

Gas-fermenting acetogens, such as Clostridium autoethanogenum, have emerged as promising biocatalysts capable of converting CO and CO2-conta … r yeast extract, and robustness in bioreactor operation (e.g., low sensitivity to gas ramping, high biomass, and dilution rates). Notably, RE3 exhibited elevated 2,3-butanediol production, while RE1 performed similarly to the best-performing previously characterised ALE isolate LAbrini. The three reverse-engineered strains showed similarities in proteome …

A comparative study of different activation methods for hydrochar: surface properties and removal of pharmaceutical pollutant in water.

Contaminants of emerging concerns, such as sulfonamides, have been frequently discovered in surface water, and the design of biomass-based adsorbents is a promising research direction to remove them from water. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was utilized to prepare hydrochar (HC) from orange peels along with various activations, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and HCl. The main goals of the present study are (i) to prepare hydrochars that were activated by different chemical methods and (ii) to provide insights into the adsorption mechanism of pollutant removal using sulfamethoxa…

The Bayesian isotope mixing (MixSIAR) model demonstrated that coal combustion, biomass burning, and vehicle exhaust collectively contributed more than 60 %, dominating the sources of NO3- during sampling periods in Tianjin. Photorespiration and plant immunity: Interactions and implications under a changing climate.

Climate change has profound impacts on plant growth, productivity, and immunity. Photosynthesis, a key biological process that sequesters atmospheric CO2, plays a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change. However, photorespiration, a process that consumes O2 instead of CO2 and is metabolically linked with photosynthesis, is often viewed as a wasteful process that reduces photosynthetic efficiency by nearly 48 % in C3 plants. This reduction has a significant impact on crop yield, given the direct contribution of photosynthesis to biomass accumulation. Over the years, numerous ef…

Amino acid metabolism in cancer cachexia and chemotherapy myotoxicity.

Cancer-induced skeletal muscle wasting (cachexia) is responsible for over 20% of cancer-related deaths, yet much about the pathophysiology of the condition remains unknown. Importantly, cancer cachexia does not seem wholly responsive to traditional anabolic stimuli such as nutritional interventions. It is possible that tumors directly or indirectly target skeletal muscle for their dynamic and abundant pool of amino acids that can be reliably used by tumors to supplement energy production and biomass synthesis. Therefore, understanding how the presence of a tumor alters circulating and tissue-l…

Harnessing rice husks: Bioethanol production for sustainable future.

The investigation of biofuel production from rice husks highlights its potential as a sustainable energy source amid rising environmental concerns and the gradual loss of fossil fuel sources. Biomass-derived biofuels, notably those derived from lignocellulosic materials, such as rice husks, provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative that reduces greenhouse gas emissions while improving energy security. This review explores the need to produce biofuels along with the progression of biofuel technology throughout the four generations and the specific mechanisms involved in the…

Membrane fluidity homeostasis is required for tobramycin-enhanced biofilm in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen, which causes chronic infections, especially in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients where it colonizes the lungs via the build-up of biofilms. Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside, is often used to treat P. aeruginosa infections in CF patients. Tobramycin at sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations enhances both biofilm biomass and thickness in vitro; however, the mechanism(s) involved are still unknown. Herein, we show that tobramycin increases the expression and activity of SigX, an extracytoplasmic sigma factor known to be involved in the biosynthesis of …
