Cutaneous representations of the hand and other body parts in the cuneate nucleus of a primate, and some relationships to previously described cortical representations.

Dynamic properties of primate somatosensory maps are dependent on normal central adjacencies of cutaneous representations. The cuneate nucleus is an important brainstem processing center of cutaneous information. Surprisingly, there are no descriptions of functional representations of the skin in the primate cuneate nucleus; as a result, the relationships of functional representations at the brainstem level and other levels of the somatosensory neuraxis remain obscure. The present neurophysiological study indicates that the main cuneate nucleus of marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) contains

Vagal and sympathetic nerve activities influenced by posterior cerebral circulation in rabbits.

Vagal and sympathetic nervous activities in the rabbit were recorded while vertebral blood flow was partially blocked by the injection of adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP; platelet aggregator). When a small dose of ADP (0.2 mg/kg) was administered into a unilateral vertebral artery, sympathetic nerve (SN) activity increased, and its magnitude was inversely correlated with the extent of the decrease in blood pressure (BP). A larger dose (2 mg/kg) of ADP suppressed SN activity on the injected side, whereas the change was small on the non-injected side. Vagal nerve (VN) activity showed a monophasic

Correlation of cardiac arrhythmias with brainstem compression in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.

Neurogenically caused cardiac arrhythmias and their correlation to lesions within the central nervous system were examined prospectively in 54 patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. All patients were examined neurologically daily for 3 weeks, with special attention given to signs of brainstem compression resulting from transtentorial herniation. Electrocardiograms were continuously recorded over an average of 5 days. A significant correlation was established between the clinical manifestations of brainstem compression and sinus arrhythmias, multifocal premature ventricular contrac

Brainstem auditory hallucinosis.

We studied three patients with findings suggesting that auditory hallucinations may occur with lesions of the tegmentum of the pons and lower midbrain. The evidence was clinical (indicating location of the lesion), radiologic (CT), pathologic in one case, and physiologic (affirming integrity of the cochleas and auditory nerves). The condition is comparable with the Lhermitte peduncular-diencephalic visual hallucinosis.

[Amnestic episode (transient global amnesia) (author's transl)].

The appearance of the amnestic episode is discussed by presentation of 4 own cases and by means of literature. The amnestic episode is a mental disorder, which exclusively affects short-term memory with a sudden onset and a duration of some hours, seldom up to several days, and often it is connected with a retrograde amnesia. The latter disappears in all cases, but there remains a permanent lack of memory for the time of the episode. Recidivism is rare. Internal, neurological and neurophysiological findings during and after the amnestic episode regularly are normal, at least certainly without

Cycloleucine uptake in the brainstem of thiamine-deficient rats.

Immature female rats were subjected to acute dietary deficiency of thiamine. An autoradiographic method was used in the semi-quantitative determination of concentration of 1-aminocyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid-carboxylic-14C (cycloleucine) in brainstem regions after intravenous administration of tracer quantities. The time course of tissue concentrations was followed and compared with that of normal and isocaloric control animals. Our data indicate that thiamine deficiency of sufficient magnitude to induce brainstem lesions has an effect on the transport of cycloleucine. The initial 2 min valu

Fall in blood pressure produced from discrete regions of the ventral surface of the medulla by glycine and lesions.

1. In cats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone sodium, atropinized by i.v. atropine methyl nitrate and artificially ventilated, experiments were carried out (a) to localize the site where glycine acts on the ventral surface of the medulla when, on topical application through paired Perspex rings caudal to the trapezoid bodies, it produces a fall in arterial blood pressure, (b) to compare the effects of uni- and bilateral application, and (c) to study the blood pressure effects produced by electrolytic lesions of the glycine-sensitive areas.2. Blood pressure fell only a little on unilateral appli

Substance P Reduces Infarct Size and Mortality After Ischemic Stroke, Possibly Through the M2 Polarization of Microglia/Macrophages and Neuroprotection in the Ischemic Rat Brain.

Substance-P (SP) is an 11 amino acid neuropeptide that is known to stimulate the peripheral mobilization of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and M2 polarization in monocytes/macrophages in a variety of acute and chronic tissue injuries. To examine the role of SP in protection and recovery from acute ischemic brain injury, experimental ischemic stroke was induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAo) in rats for 1 h with subsequent reperfusion. Two injections of SP, immediately and one day post-tMCAo, resulted in approximately threefold lower mortality and 40% less infarct vol

Stem cells and cell-based therapies for cerebral palsy: a call for rigor.

Cell-based therapies hold significant promise for infants at risk for cerebral palsy (CP) from perinatal brain injury (PBI). PBI leading to CP results from multifaceted damage to neural cells. Complex developing neural networks are injured by neural cell damage plus unique perturbations in cell signaling. Given that cell-based therapies can simultaneously repair multiple injured neural components during critical neurodevelopmental windows, these interventions potentially offer efficacy for patients with CP. Currently, the use of cell-based interventions in infants at risk for CP is limited by

Mixed Signals and Interspecies Variation in the Plasticity of Adult Mammal Brains.

Despite the growing interest in brain structural plasticity and the substantial body of knowledge that has accumulated over recent decades, some issues remain poorly defined, leading to confusion in the interpretation of results. In addition to stem cell-driven neurogenesis in adult neurogenic niches (adult neurogenesis), neuronal precursors in a state of arrested maturation have also been described, representing a form of neurogenesis without division based on so-called "immature" or late-maturing neurons. These processes occur in different brain regions yet share certain molecular markers an

Human-induced pluripotent stem cells in psychiatric disorders: An inflammatory perspective.

Psychiatric disorders have long been associated with inflammation- either as prolonged mental illnesses leading to immune dysregulations or as psychiatric conditions arising from systemic inflammation. Physiologically, inflammation is one of the responses to bodily stress, however, the degree of inflammation depends on the type and duration of the stressor. Here, we focus on understanding both- inflammation-induced brain cellular response alterations and neuroinflammation caused by an underlying psychiatric condition. Apart from post-mortem brains, the closest approach by which one can recreat

Quantitative and Phylogenetic Analyses of Immature Neurons in Cortical Layer II and Amygdala of Macaque Monkeys.

"Immature" or "late-maturing" neurons exist in layer II of the cerebral cortex (cortical immature neurons; cINs) and within the amygdaloid complex (subcortical immature neurons; scINs). These cells remain in a prolonged state of arrested development yet retain the ability to resume maturation and to functionally integrate into neural circuits. Both cINs and scINs are abundant in large-brained mammals with respect to small-brained, lissencephalic rodents. In previous reports, using a comparable method for quantification in diverse mammals, including mice, chimpanzees, and other species, we show
