The close relationship between bacteria and tumors has recently attracted increasing attention, and an increasing number of resources are being invested in the research and development of biomedical materials designed for the treatment of both. In this study, prefabricated TiN nanodots (NDs) and Fe(CO)5 nanoparticles are combined into sodium alginate (ALG) hydrogels to create a biomedical material for the topical treatment of breast cancer and subcutaneous abscesses, and a pseudocatalytic hydrogel with intrinsic photothermal and antibacterial activities is synthesized. TiN+Fe(CO)5+ALG hydrogel

By employing a mixed-ligand strategy, we synthesized two new coordination polymers (CPs) featuring Co(II): {Co(H2L)(bib)]·2H2O}n (1) and {Co(L)(bib)2]·2H2O}n (2), where H4L represents 5-(3,5-dicarboxybenzyloxy) isophthalic acid, and bib denotes 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene. These CPs were obtained through the reaction of H4L, a flexible carboxylic acid ligand, with Co(NO3)2·6H2O in various solvent mixtures, along with the N-donor co-ligand bib. Complexes 1 and 2 are formed through distinct coordination modes, resulting in their distinct structural features and excellent fluorescent properties.

Desulfatiglans anilini is a sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) capable of oxidizing aniline, although growth and aniline turnover rates are slow, making it difficult to analyze the metabolism of the strain. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effect of sulfide on growth of D. anilini cultures, in order to improve its growth and aniline turnover rates, and study the biochemical mechanisms of sulfide inhibition. Hydrogen sulfide was found to inhibit growth of D. anilini, regardless of whether the strain was grown with aniline or phenol, and complete inhibition was observed at 20m

Co-receptors cooperatively regulate the function of immune cells to optimize anti-infectious immunity while limiting autoimmunity by providing stimulatory and inhibitory co-signals. Among various co-receptors, those in the CD28/CTLA-4 family play fundamental roles in the regulation of lymphocytes by modulating the strength, quality, and/or duration of the antigen receptor signal. The development of the lethal lymphoproliferative disorder and various tissue-specific autoimmune diseases in mice deficient for CTLA-4 and PD-1, respectively, clearly demonstrates their pivotal roles in the developme

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an anti-inflammatory gaseous molecule produced endogenously by heme oxygenases (HOs) HO-1 and HO-2. However, the mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of CO in the human bronchial epithelium are still not fully understood. In this study, the cationic peptide poly-l-arginine (PLA) was utilized to induce bronchial epithelial damage and subsequent pro-inflammatory cytokine release in the human bronchial epithelial cell line 16HBE14o-. Expression of both HO-1 and HO-2 after PLA exposure was examined. The polarized secretion of two pro-inflammatory cytokines, i

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratosis (AK) is an incipient form of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Understanding the differentially expressed genes between AK and cSCC states would be helpful for the early prevention and treatment of cSCC. Consequently, this study aimed to screen the key genes associated with the progression of AK to cSCC.
METHODS: The microarray dataset GSE45216 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus, which included 10 AK and 30 primary cSCC skin tissue samples. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in cSCC samples, compared to those in AK, were identified. Gene c

The objective of this study was to determine the incidence and predictors of Fanconi Syndrome (FS) in a cohort of patients taking tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Clinical records and laboratory investigations from patients receiving TDF between 2002 and 2016 were extracted. FS was defined as normoglycaemic glycosuria and proteinuria and at least one other marker of renal dysfunction. Regression analysis was performed with time to development of FS and the following covariates: ritonavir co-administration, age, gender, co-morbidities (hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, viral hepatiti

There is considerable evidence that co-infection with the sexually transmitted pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Gc) can increase the likelihood of both transmitting and acquiring HIV-1 worldwide. However, less information is available on how host immune response to co-infection differs with immune response to HIV-1 infection alone. To evaluate HIV-1 burden effects on host response to co-infection with Gc, we performed gene-expression profiling of human PBMCs infected over a broad range of viral titers (HIV-1 series) and upon exposure to a single infectious dose of Gc (HIV-1/Gc series). The tran

In this study, the impact of Th1-inducing cytokine gene co-delivery and antigen boosting on humoral and cellular responses induced by multiepitopic DNA immunization in mice have been investigated. Intramuscular injection of mixed DNA constructs encoding for HIV-1 Gag, Tat and Nef proteins, co-administered with the DNA encoding for interleukin-18 (IL-18) have been used. The effect of boosting with the recombinant proteins was also evaluated on the outcome of the responses in DNA-primed mice. It was demonstrated that at least two DNA immunizations were necessary to generate virus specific Th-1 r

PURPOSE: Natural killer (NK) cells contribute to tumour immunosurveillance. They detect and eliminate circulating tumour cells by degranulation, releasing perforin and granzyme. Also involved in NK-cell-mediated tumour cell defense are cytokines with proapoptotic and anti-apoptotic characteristics as well as extracellular vesicles containing perforin. Recent clinical studies suggest that volatile anesthetics might negatively impact cancer outcomes compared with intravenous agents. A possible factor could be the impairment of NK cell activity by volatile anesthetics. In this study, we aimed to

Human mammary carcinoma cells and normal mouse breast epithelial cells desensitized as the result of treatment with beta-adrenergic agonists. Accumulation of cAMP in the same cells was affected only slightly by caffeine and there was no detectable desensitization or hypersensitization as a result of that treatment. However, as in many other cell types, caffeine was an effective inhibitor of adenosine action. These observations do not support the hypothesis made by Minton and his co-workers (1), that treatment of breast epithelial cells with agents that increase cAMP accumulation leads to hyper

PROBLEM: Decidual natural killer (dNK) cells play key roles in maternal-fetal immune regulation, trophoblast invasion, and vascular remodeling, and most dNK cell populations are CD56bright CD16- NK cells. However, the enrichment and redistribution of dNK cells in the local decidua have not been clarified yet.
METHOD OF STUDY: A total of 45 women with normal pregnancies and 8 unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) patients were included. We isolated primary human dNK (n = 53) and peripheral blood NK (pNK) cells (n = 5) from specimen and analyzed CD56, CD82, and CD29 by flow cytometry

We hypothesize that T cells such as interleukin (IL)-21+ B cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6)+ T follicular helper cells can regulate B cell-mediated immunity within the allograft during acute T cell-mediated rejection; this process may feed chronic allograft rejection in the long term. To investigate this mechanism, we determined the presence and activation status of organized T and B cells in so-called ectopic lymphoid structures (ELSs) in different types of acute renal allograft rejection. Biopsies showing the following primary diagnosis were included: acute/active antibody-mediated rejection, C4d+ (a/

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including benzo[g,h,i]perylene (BGP) and benzo[b]fluoranthene (BBF), are ubiquitous airborne pollutants with significant toxicological relevance. Inhalation represents the primary exposure route, with the respiratory epithelium and alveolar macrophages serving as key targets for adverse effects. Despite their prevalence, mechanistic data on BGP and BBF, particularly in respiratory cell models, remain limited. Here, we evaluated the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and cytokine-associated effects of BGP and BBF in a co-culture of human alveolar epithelial (A549) an

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM), a common type of brain tumor, is currently treatable through radiation therapy. However, there is room for improvement in the effectiveness of treatment. Radiation can lead to an increase in the expression of PD-L1 and VEGF, which might reduce the responsiveness of the tumor to the therapy. This situation underlines the necessity for innovative treatment strategies.
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the potential of attenuated Salmonella carrying the co-expressing plasmid siPD-L1-Endo to effectively inhibit PD-L1 and VEGF expression, thereby enhancing

BACKGROUND: Silicosis is a work-related condition resulting from breathing in crystalline silica particles, marked by persistent inflammation and abnormal healing mechanisms in the lungs. Our previous studies demonstrated that inhibition of Cxcr4 with Plerixafor (AMD3100) markedly attenuates pulmonary fibrosis.
METHODS: By integrating single-cell RNA sequencing with spatial transcriptomics, we analysed lung tissues from a mouse model of pneumoconiosis. Using the Robust Cell Type Decomposition algorithm to deconvolve spatial transcriptomic data, we identified Cxcr4+ macrophages and Cxcl12+ fib
