The burden and distribution of cystic echinococcosis in Bhutan: a retrospective study.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus s.l. is a neglected zoonosis posing a significant public health challenge. Little is known about human CE in Bhutan. This study was conducted to gain an understanding of the burden, distribution, and potential risk factors of CE in Bhutan. From January 2015 to December 2019 data from Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) and 6 other district-level hospitals were reviewed. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. DALYs and Poisson regression models were used to estimate the burden and explore the re…

Investigating the therapeutic effects of curcumin nanocapsules in hydatid cyst-infected mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The primary treatment for cysts is surgery, including removing the cyst and administering the appropriate chemical drugs. Herbal remedies have gained popularity as a viable and secure alternative to conventional pharmaceuticals. It may be advantageous to use nanocapsules to overcome the bioavailability challenges associated with herbal remedies like curcumin. The present study aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of curcumin nanocapsules in treating hydatid infections. METHODS: Curcumin-loaded oil-in-water surfactant-based biocompatible nanomicelles were devel

Prevalence study of Echinococcus granulosus in guanaco (Lama guanicoe) from the Chilean Patagonia unexpectedly reveals the southernmost limit of Taenia omissa.

This study presents the first detection of Taenia omissa metacestodes in guanaco (Lama guanicoe) within the Chilean Patagonia, marking the southernmost record of natural infection in an intermediate host on the continent. Taenia omissa was found in the continental part of the Magallanes region where the top predators are pumas (Puma concolor). Conversely, all metacestodes found in guanacos collected from Tierra del Fuego Island, where no pumas exist, were identified solely as Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto. Additionally, this research highlights a tissue preference of T. omissa for live…

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto in the East Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, China.

In Xinjiang, previous reports of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in livestock have focused on West and Middle Tianshan Mountains. In contrast, there is an absence of research on CE in the East Tianshan Mountains. To determine the epidemiology and genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) in domestic animals in the East Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, China, the livers and lungs of 1773 domestic animals were examined, between January 2023 and March 2023, and 40 cysts were collected. Polymerase chain reaction was used for the molecular diagnosis of the cysts. Statistical results…

Proteomic analysis of mouse liver lesions at all three stages of Echinococcus granulosus infection.

Echinococcus granulosus, a zoonotic parasite, can severely damage host health or even lead to host death. In humans, early diagnosis of E. granulosus infection is difficult because the initial stages of the infection tend to be asymptomatic, this delays treatment and worsens prognosis in most patients. Herein, we present a comprehensive, temporal proteomic atlas of the liver at three stages of E. granulosus infection and analyze the changes in the proteome of host focal lesions; this atlas may provide an overview of the effects of E. granulosus in the host, as well as the interactions between …

A rare case of recurrent spinal hydatid cyst in a 17-year-old man with neurological deficits and balance impairment.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts are caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm parasite Echinococcus granulosus, leading to a rare but significant zoonotic infection. This disease is primarily observed in regions with prevalent agricultural and livestock practices. While the liver, lungs, and brain are most affected, spinal involvement is notably rare. Hydatid cyst disease develops gradually and is usually asymptomatic in the early stages. Symptoms usually emerge when the cysts enlarge sufficiently to cause compression. Effective treatment typically combines surgical intervention with antiparasitic …

Isolated muscle involvement in hydatid cyst.

Although hydatid cyst, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, can develop in any part of the body, involvement of the liver and lung represents approximately 90% of all cases. Involvement of the musculoskeletal system is comparatively rare. Diagnosis is difficult because symptoms are non-specific. We present a case, together with the imaging findings, in order to draw attention to the exclusion of hydatid cyst before surgery or biopsy in patients with muscular pain and a palpable mass.

[Combined echinococcosis of the lungs, heart and liver: clinic, diagnosis and treatment. Case report].

Echinococcosis or hidatid disease is a parasitic illness which is caused by the most common pathogens Echinococcus granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. oligarthrus. When the agent gets into the organism, it penetrates the organ and forms a cyst. Cysts are located more often (75%) in the liver where they exist without any clinical manifestation. They can be located in other internal organs: lungs, the heart and others. The localization of cysts in several organs simultaneously is a very rare case. The article aims to demonstrate a patient who had a combined echinococcosis of the lungs, heart an…

Machine learning to predict the decision to perform surgery in hepatic echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a significant public health issue, primarily affecting the liver. While several management strategies exist, there is a lack of predictive tools to guide surgical decisions for hepatic CE. This study aimed to develop predictive models to support surgical decision-making in hepatic CE, enhancing the precision of patient allocation to surgical or non-surgical management pathways. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 406 hepatic CE patients treated at our center (2009-2021). Clinical, imaging, and treatment data were used to develop a Cox regres…

Prevalence and histopathological analysis of cystic echinococcosis in ruminants of District Narowal, Pakistan: focus on pulmonary involvement.

A total of 384 animals (sheep, goat, cattle, and buffalo) were examined for the presence of hydatid cysts only in the lungs. The lung tissue samples associated with the hydatid cyst were collected immediately after slaughter, followed by fixation in 10% formalin. The fixed tissue was subjected to paraffin embedding technique. Tissue sections of 5 microns were cut by microtome and stained using Harri's Haematoxilin and Eosin method. Overall, 13.80% of ruminants were found positive for lung infections with hydatid cyst. Only the sex of ruminants showed significant (P < 0.05) association with the

Case Report: An exceptional localisation in the thigh of a giant primary subcutaneous hydatid cyst.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus and is found globally. Although the liver and lungs are the most prevalent sites of involvement, sub-cutaneous hydatid cysts are rare especially in the primary occurrence. Sub-cutaneous hydatid cysts usually are noticed as slow growing, painless, and mobile masses beneath the overlying skin which is usually normal and are generally found on the trunk and proximal extremities. To the best of our knowledge, very few cases of primary subcutaneous hydatid cysts of the thigh have been documented. We present …

Hemorrhagic liver cyst misdiagnosed as echinococcosis in a Tibetan woman: A case report.

RATIONALE: We describe a case of hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as hepatic echinococcosis. Pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen was the first symptom to appear. In addition to highlighting the significance of imaging in distinguishing hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding from other cystic liver tumors, we also talk about the difficulties and obstacles encountered throughout the diagnosis and treatment of this case. More imaging evidence for the diagnosis of hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding is anticipated in this patient. PATIENT …

Characteristics of the imaging diagnosis of alveolar echinococcosis.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) primarily manifests in the liver and exhibits characteristics resembling those of slow-growing malignant tumours. Untreated Echinococcus multilocularis infection can be lethal. By infiltrating the vascular systems, biliary tracts, and the hilum of the liver, it might lead to various problems. Due to its ability to infiltrate neighbouring tissues or metastasize to distant organs, AE can often be mistaken for malignancies. We present a concise overview of the epidemiological and pathophysiological characteristics of AE, as well as the clinical manifestations of the d…

Ecoepidemic modeling and dynamics of alveolar echinococcosis transmission.

Alveolar echinococcosis, transmitted between definitive hosts and intermediate hosts via predation, threatens the health of humans and causes great economic losses in western China. In order to explore the transmission mechanism of this disease, an eco-epidemiological lifecycle model is formulated to illustrate interactions between two hosts. The basic and demographic reproduction numbers are developed to characterize the stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria as well as bifurcation dynamics. The existence of forward bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation are confirmed and are used to …

Diffusely Increased FDG Uptake of the Kidney Caused by Severe Renal Artery Stenosis.

Renal artery stenosis can result in renovascular hypertension and ischemic nephropathy. We describe FDG PET/CT and delayed abdominal FDG PET/MRI findings in a kidney associated with severe renal artery stenosis resulting from renal artery invasion in retroperitoneal alveolar echinococcosis. The renal parenchyma showed diffusely increased activity on both FDG PET/CT and delayed FDG PET/MRI. There was no activity in the renal collecting system on FDG PET/CT and focal urine activity in the renal calyces on delayed FDG PET/MRI. This case indicates that renal artery stenosis should be included in t…
