Cytologic manifestations of cervical and vaginal infections. I. Epithelial and inflammatory cellular changes.

We used multiple logistic regression to analyze microbiological and clinical correlates of inflammatory and epithelial cell changes on Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears in patients from a sexually transmitted disease clinic. Among randomly selected patients, increased numbers of histiocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes and the presence of transformed lymphocytes were associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection, while increased lymphocytes were associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection; minimal squamous atypia was associated with yeast infection; and moderate squamous atypia an

Chlamydia trachomatis as a cause of acute perihepatitis associated with pelvic inflammatory disease.

Of four cases of acute salpingitis and perihepatitis confirmed by laparoscopy Chlamydia trachomatis was cultured from the cervix only in two and from both the cervix uteri and the Fallopian tubes in two; the latter finding has not been reported from cases with combined salpingitis and perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome). Since gonococci, other aerobic, or anaerobic bacteria were not isolated from the Fallopian tubes, an aetiological relationship between C trachomatis and the Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome is suggested.

Chlamydiae, cervicitis, and abnormal Papanicolaou smears.

Cervical abnormalities accompanied by Papanicolaou Class II or Class III cytologic results are commonly encountered in gynecologic office practice. Chlamydiae are a common cause of genital tract infection, with or without manifest symptoms or signs. An immunofluorescence method was used to determine the presence of antichlamydial antibodies in cervical secretions. Eleven of 15 patients in whom such antibodies were found (73.3%) had Papanicolaou Class II or Class III smears, in contrast to only 3 of 18 patients (16.7%) without antichlamydial antibodies. The determination of antichlamydial antib

[The lymphocyte transformation test with the bedsonian antigen (bedsonian LTT) in old and recent Fiessinger-Leroy-Reiter syndromes and in ankylsoing spondylarthritis. Additional study].

The lymphoblastic transformation test in the presence of bedsonian antigen was positive in 72 per cent of the cases confirmed Fiessinger-Leroy-Reiter syndrome, while it was negative in all the controls. This test remains positive over a long period since it was found to be positive in 69.75 per cent of old cases of FLR syndrome diagnosed 13-17 years previously. In cases of post-Reiter ankylosing spondylarthritis (ASp), the bedonian LTT was positive with equal frequency as in cases of FLR syndrome not complicated by ASp (68.4 per cent). On the other hand, in the cases of ASp without known histo

High prevalence of asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections among human immunodeficiency virus-infected pregnant women in a low-income South African community.

There is a lack of evidence on the burden of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) among HIV-infected pregnant women in South Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of HIV-infected pregnant women in two healthcare facilities in a South African township to determine the prevalence of CT, NG and TV. HIV-infected pregnant women were recruited during the first antenatal care visit for their current pregnancy and requested to self-collect vulvovaginal swab specimens. Specimens were tested for CT, NG and TV using the Xpert® assay (Cepheid, Sun

Molecular investigation of menstrual tissue for the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis collected by women with a history of infertility.

AIM: At present, routine laboratory investigation of the infectious agents implicated in female genital infections is mainly based on culture/direct fluorescence antibody (DFA) (immunofluorescence antibody test) results of cervicovaginal secretions. In this study the use of the menstrual tissue is introduced for the molecular detection of pathogens which are implicated in female infertility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cervicovaginal secretions and menstrual tissue samples of 87 women (mean age 34.07 ± 5.17) experiencing infertility problems were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma ureal

BACKGROUND: Rectal Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) are escalating public health concerns. This study aimed to explore (1) the reliability of self-reported sexual positioning as an indicator for rectal CT and NG screening, and (2) factors associated with rectal CT and NG infections in Shenzhen, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 settings in Shenzhen, China, from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, and basic CT knowledge were collected. Uri

Bacterial Vaginosis and Post-Operative Pelvic Infections.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) represents a condition in which the normal protective Lactobacilli, especially those that produce H2O2, are replaced by high quantities of facultative anaerobes, leading to gynecologic and obstetric post-operative complications. BV is an important cause of obstetric and gynecological adverse sequelae and it could lead to an increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, genital herpes, Chlamydia, Trichomonas, and human immunodeficiency virus. Herein, we reviewed bacterial vaginosis and its association with post-operative pelvic infecti

Changes in awareness and knowledge concerning mother-to-child infections among Japanese pregnant women between 2012 and 2018.

This study aimed to investigate the long-term changes in awareness of and knowledge about mother-to-child infections across 6 years in Japan. A questionnaire survey was conducted at our facility from October 2012 to January 2018, and the study periods were divided into 4 phases comprising 16 months each. A multiple-choice questionnaire assessed participants' awareness of the following 13 pathogens of mother-to-child infections: cytomegalovirus (CMV), Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), hepatitis B virus, rubella virus, herpes simplex virus, parvovirus B19, hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency

Self-reported infections during international travel and notifiable infections among returning international travellers, Sweden, 2009-2013.

We studied food and water-borne diseases (FWDs), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), vector-borne diseases (VBDs) and diseases vaccinated against in the Swedish childhood vaccination programme among Swedish international travellers, in order to identify countries associated with a high number of infections. We used the national database for notifiable infections to estimate the number of FWDs (campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, giardiasis, shigellosis, EHEC, Entamoeba histolytica, yersinosis, hepatitis A, paratyphoid fever, typhoid fever, hepatitis E, listeriosis, cholera), STIs (chlamydia,

STI prevalence and the integration of point-of-care nucleic acid amplification testing into STI diagnostic algorithms at a Médecins Sans Frontières key population clinic in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

BACKGROUND: Data is limited on the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among key populations in Honduras. Additionally, clinics largely rely on syndromic management of STIs, which has poor diagnostic performance. This study assesses STI prevalence and the feasibility and diagnostic utility of rapid nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) in comparison to syndromic identification among the LGBTQIA+ and sex worker community of San Pedro Sula attending a Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) clinic. METHODS: Patients attending MSF's San Pedro Sula clinic from February to June 2024, w

Chemsex and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among Canadian pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users in the l'Actuel PrEP Cohort (2013-2020).

OBJECTIVES: Use of illicit substances during sex (chemsex) may increase transmission of HIV and other STIs. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective at preventing HIV transmission, providing an important prevention tool for those who practise chemsex. However, it does not prevent acquisition of other STIs. We aim to examine the impact of chemsex on STI incidence among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM), and transgender women using PrEP in Montréal, Canada. METHODS: We linked baseline sociodemographic and behavioural data with follow-up STI testing from 2013 t
