Impact of symptomatic menopausal transition on the occurrence of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders: A real-world multi-site study.

BACKGROUND: The menopause transition is a vulnerable period that can be associated with changes in mood and cognition. The present study aimed to investigate whether a symptomatic menopausal transition increases the risks of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. METHODS: This population-based, retrospective cohort study analysed data from five electronic health record databases in South Korea. Women aged 45-64 years with and without symptomatic menopausal transition were matched 1:1 using propensity-score matching. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to age and use of hormone repla

Clinical, neuroradiological, and molecular characterization of patients with atypical Zellweger spectrum disorder caused by PEX16 mutations: a case series.

Peroxisome biogenesis disorders-Zellweger spectrum disorders (PBD-ZSD)-are primarily autosomal recessive disorders caused by mutations in any of 13 PEX genes involved in peroxisome assembly. Compared to other PEX-related disorders, some PEX16 defects are associated with an atypical phenotype consisting of spasticity, cerebellar dysfunction, preserved cognition, and prolonged survival. In this case series, medical records and brain MRIs from 7 patients with this PEX16 presentation were reviewed to further characterize this phenotype. Classic PBD features such as sensory deficits and amelogenesi

[Mood stabilizers--past, present and future].

Bipolar disorders are common, chronic, recurrent, and episodic mood disturbances, associated with variable dysfunctions in sleep, appetite, libido, activity, and cognition. These disorders are typically so severe that they impair occupational functioning. Until the discovery of lithium in the treatment of bipolar disorders, only electroconvulsive therapy was the available treatment of mania. After discovering the therapeutic effect of lithium in bipolar illness, the clinical outcome of the disorder has changed dramatically. Lithium has become the mainstay of the the treatment for bipolar disor

Changes in cognitive content during and following cognitive therapy for recurrent depression: substantial and enduring, but not predictive of change in depressive symptoms.

The authors examined the amount and durability of change in the cognitive content of 156 adult outpatients with recurrent major depressive disorder after treatment with cognitive therapy. The pre-post magnitude of change was large for the Attributional Style Questionnaire Failure composite (d = 0.79), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (d = 1.05), and Self-Efficacy Scale (d = 0.83), and small for the Attributional Style Questionnaire Success composite (d = 0.30). Changes in cognitive content were clinically significant, as defined by their 64%-87% scores overlapping with score distributions from co

Association of TRPV1 genetic variants with cognitive functions in Parkinson disease.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment. The transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel has been implicated in neurodegenerative processes, but its contribution to cognitive variation in PD remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether TRPV1 genetic variants influence cognitive performance and whether these effects are moderated by PD status. Three TRPV1 polymorphisms (rs8065080, rs12936340, rs182637) were genotyped in 274 healthy control subjects and 127 individuals with PD. Cog

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy data from a computerized cognitive intervention in children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) are significantly impaired in their academic performance and functionality due to cognitive deficits, especially in attention, memory, and other facets of executive function. Compounding these cognitive deficits is the remarkably high risk of major psychoses, occurring in 25% of adolescents and adults with the disorder. There are currently no evidence-based interventions designed to improve the cognitive deficits in these individuals. We implemented a neuroplasticity-based computerized cognitive remediation program for 12 weeks in 13

Minireview: Animal model of schizophrenia from the perspective of behavioral pharmacology: Effect of treatment on cognitive functions.

Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental disorder characterized by positive, negative and cognitive symptoms. Whereas positive symptoms are satisfactorily addressed by current antipsychotic treatment, negative and cognitive symptomatic treatment remains largely ineffective. This review investigates the treatment efficacy regarding cognitive symptoms and evaluates the contribution of different monoamine receptor systems involved in schizophrenia pathophysiology to cognition. In the review, we included preclinical studies assessing the effect of different treatments on cognition in pre-pulse inhib

What can autism and dyslexia tell us about intelligence?

This paper argues that understanding developmental disorders requires developing theories and models that explicitly represent the role of general intelligence in the cognitive phenotype of the disorder. In the case of autism it is argued that the low-IQ scores of people with autism are not likely to be due to a deficit in the cognitive process that is arguably the major cause of mental retardation - namely, speed of processing - but rather low IQ reflects the pervasive and cascading effects of the deficit in the information-processing module that causes autism. In the case of dyslexia, two ra

A guide to behavioural experiments in bipolar disorder.

Behavioural experiments are an important component of cognitive-behavioural therapy. However, there exists little up-to-date guidance on how to conduct these in people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. This paper provides recommendations on how to conduct behavioural experiments in this population. The aim is to upskill and empower clinicians to conduct behavioural experiments. The paper combines the expertise of senior clinicians working in the United Kingdom. The article starts by providing general advice on conducting behavioural experiments in people with bipolar disorder. It then offe

Inferential confusion in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the inferential confusion questionnaire.

The current article represents the further validation of the construct of inferential confusion amongst clinical samples. Inferential confusion is proposed to be a meta-cognitive confusion particularly relevant to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that leads a person to confuse an imagined possibility with an actual probability. As such, it conceptualizes OCD as a form of belief disorder similar to a delusion or overvalued idea that is a product of distorted reasoning processes. In contrast, other cognitive models of OCD emphasize a phobic model of development in OCD, and thus consider the e

Consensus clinical guidelines for the assessment of cognitive and behavioural problems in Tuberous Sclerosis.

Tuberous Sclerosis (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterised by abnormal growths in a wide range of organs. In the brain, abnormalities of differentiation, proliferation and migration can produce a range of neuropsychiatric features such as mental retardation, autism and ADHD. Although these manifestations are not diagnostic of the disorder, cognitive and behavioural features are often of greatest concern to families yet limited clinical assessment and interventions are currently offered. A consensus panel at a TSC Brain/Behaviour workshop recommended that the cognitive and behavioural profile

Body-size estimation in eating disorders using video distortion on a life-size screen.

BACKGROUND: The video-distortion method on a life-size screen is one of the new methods to systematically study the body experience of eating-disordered patients. METHODS: Using this method, we have studied body-size estimation in female patients suffering from eating disorders: anorexia nervosa restricting type (n = 87) and mixed type (n = 34); bulimia nervosa (n = 44), and a normal control group (n = 45). Subjects had to estimate a neutral object (neutral response) and their own body size: what they think they really look like (cognitive response); what they feel they look like (affective r

Cognition and anatomy of adult Niemann-Pick disease type C: Insights for the Alzheimer field.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder causing an intracellular lipid trafficking defect and varying damage to the spleen, liver, and central nervous system. The adult form, representing approximately 20% of the cases, is associated with progressive cognitive decline. Intriguingly, brains of adult NPC patients exhibit neurofibrillary tangles, a characteristic hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the cognitive, psychiatric, and neuropathological features of adult NPC and their relation to AD have yet to be explored. We systematically reviewed the litera

Non-suicidal self-injury links with multidimensional cognitive dysfunctions in adolescents with depression.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has high prevalence among adolescents with mood disorders and is accompanied by cognitive impairments. Most existing studies have examined their impairments on single cognitive domains. It remains unclear which cognitive deficits are associated with adolescent NSSI and its functions and addictive features, from a multidimensional perspective. METHODS: A total of 161 adolescents diagnosed with first-episode major depressive disorder (MDD) and 137 healthy controls were recruited between June 2020 and December 2024. Participants were divided into three

Cognitive function following early life war-time stress exposure in a cohort of Vietnamese older adults.

Although Alzheimer's Disease is a leading cause of death in Vietnam and other post-conflict, low- and middle-income countries, aside from studies of veterans in western populations, research on war-related violence and deprivation as risk factors for cognitive disorders remains sparse. Using data from the Vietnam Health and Aging Study, which relied upon a multistage probability sample of 2447 older adults residing in districts of northern Vietnam differentially exposed to wartime bombing and numerous war-related stressors, this paper investigates associations between early-life war-related st
