The clinical and radiological features of five patients with renal hydatid disease communicating with the collecting system are described. Rupture into the renal pelvis of a hydatid cyst gives rise to acute flank pain followed by voiding of scolices or daughter cysts with or without hematuria and/or urinary obstruction. Intravenous urography demonstrates a renal mass frequently involving the collecting system; arteriography shows it to be avascular; sonography reveals a multicystic lesion of mixed echogenicity. When daughter cysts are present, computed tomography establishes the diagnosis.

A choroid plexus papilloma was found in the right lateral ventricle of a five-month-old boy. Though it was associated with an important communicating hydrocephalus, it was seen at operation to be freely mobile and did not directly obstruct the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. Computerized axial tomography was the most helpful para-clinical investigation for diagnostic purposes, and for follow-up study. In 296 cases with a single aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA), fenestration or the presence of more than two ACoA's was observed in 17 cases (5.7%), and abnormal vessels of ACoA origin, such as a median artery of the corpus callosum, were observed in 13 cases (4.4%). congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was diagnosed in 64 (0.42%) of 15,212 infants born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, during a period of 44 consecutive months. The outcome in 37 adult patients with idiopathic communicating hydrocephalus treated by ventriculoatrial shunting is presented. Only 33% showed definite improvement, and no diagnostic procedures accurately predicted the outcome of surgery. These were compared with a "control" group of 12 patients who were not shunted; 50% of these were stable for up to 36 months. These findings, and the high frequency of serious complications (35%), suggest caution in recommending a shunt procedure.

In 1973, epidemiologic and serologic data related to hepatitis B infection were collected from the residents of two remote Alaskan Eskimo villages located in an area of high hepatitis incidence. A total of 418 sera were tested by solid-phase radioimmunoassay for heaptitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody to that antigen (anti-HBs). Utilizing an atraumatic model to produce chronic hydrocephalus, CSF production was measured during and after development of communicatin hydrocephalus. CSF volume production was significantly lower in animals with increased pressure. Animals with chronic hydrocephalus and normal pressures had abnormal CSF production. Diminished CSF production appears to offer a potential compensatory mechanism when CSF absorption is altered.

In a sample of 100 psychogeriatric admissions to three Toronto hospitals, the elderly in other institutions, including old age and nursing homes, and those living alone in the community were over-represented. Twenty thousand Arabs of various nationalities living in Kuwait have been investigated over the past 5 years; 5,470 (27%) manifested recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU). Non-Kuwaiti Arabs were affected more the Kuwaitis and the prevalence of the disease was respectively 35% and 18%.
