The ABCs of cardiovascular disease prevention: communicating what we know in 2026.

Despite numerous breakthroughs in Preventive Cardiology, control of key cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors including blood pressure and diabetes has stagnated in the past decade, driven in part by the obesity epidemic and population aging. Improving dissemination and implementation of the latest guidelines and evidence-based recommendations is a key national priority for CVD prevention. The ABCs of CVD Prevention is a structured framework identifying actionable domains for CVD prevention, first published in 2001 and last updated in 2021, designed to maximize clarity and uptake of key pr

Between culture and care: nurses' experiences of end-of-life communication in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Communicating at the end-of-life (EOL) requires deep sensitivity and adherence to strong ethical principles that respect the dignity, rights, and values of patients and their families. However, many nurses find this task emotionally challenging, especially in settings with limited training and strong cultural taboos about death. In Ghana, little is known about how nurses experience and manage these conversations in everyday clinical practice. This study explored nurses’ experiences communicating with families at the end of life. METHODS: This study adopted an interpretivist qualita

Pathways to community palliative spiritual care volunteering: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: As the world’s population ages and life expectancy increases, the prevalence of chronic diseases and cancer has risen, increasing the demand for community palliative care. While community palliative care relies on teamwork, volunteers play a crucial role in connecting medical teams with patients’ families and the community. However, challenges in recruiting and managing palliative volunteer teams remain largely unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the motivations and process of engaging in community palliative spiritual care as a volunteer. METHODS: This stud

Expanding Home- and Community-Based Service Access in the Veterans Health Administration.

OBJECTIVES: The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a continuum of home- and community-based services (HCBS) to support veterans' ability to remain in their homes and communities as they age. Although VA delivers some HCBS directly, many HCBS are provided through contracted agencies in the community. We sought to understand the strategies VA staff use to facilitate veterans' HCBS access, particularly as these services become increasingly difficult to access in many areas. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A purposeful s

Program evaluation of a multiparty communication intervention supporting people with congenital deafblindness.

Multiparty communication is not commonly used by people with congenital deafblindness. This study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of Get Together, an intervention that supports communication partners in fostering multiparty communication with people with congenital deafblindness. Get Together was used to train four communication partners of individuals with congenital deafblindness. The methods used to assess the program evaluation were questionnaires, a semi-structured interview, and video analysis. The results indicate that communication partners succeeded in having multiparty co

Stakeholder-Perceived Needs in Early Community Nursing Implementation: A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: Health systems across Europe are increasingly challenged by population ageing, multimorbidity, and persistent inequities in access to care. Community Nursing has emerged as a promising approach to strengthening preventive, community-based services, yet evidence on stakeholder-perceived needs during early implementation remains limited. This study aimed to explore how different types of needs are perceived and articulated during the early implementation of Community Nursing in Austria. Methods: An interpretive descriptive qualitative study was conducted as part of an Aust

Building Bridges in Palliative Care: Perspectives on a Community-Health Information Exchange.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experiencing homelessness or unstable housing conditions face many challenges in accessing palliative and end-of-life care. Although supports may exist in hospitals and community settings, service providers face communication barriers with different agencies and may struggle to connect clients with appropriate community and hospital resources. Community-health information exchanges (CHIEs) are one possible vehicle to enhance communication and understanding between service providers and recipients. They hold potential to support more personalized palliative and end-of-

Communicating Risk in the Age of Misinformation: Empirical Frameworks for Understanding Stakeholder Trust.

This systematic literature review examines how stakeholder trust is conceptualized and measured in risk and science communication amid increasingly complex information environments shaped by misinformation and disinformation. Following PRISMA procedures, which provide a framework for conducting a systematic review with transparency, replicability, and completeness, we searched major databases and screened studies using explicit inclusion criteria. For instance, trust had to be operationalized and measured in risk or scientifically complex contexts; credibility studies were retained when credib

Sex pheromone communication and its regulation by the sex determination pathway in cockroaches.

Sexual communication in animals orchestrates a series of interactive behaviors from locating and recognizing potential partners to courtship and final mating decisions and is thus critical for sexual reproduction and population fitness. Highly efficient communication between the sexes requires not only the production and emission of species-specific signals but also their precise detection and interpretation by the receiving individuals. Cockroaches, as one of the most evolutionarily ancient and successful group of insects, are quintessential chemical communicators that rely heavily on sex phe

Spatial and seasonal taxonomic patterns in moth communities of the central Congo peatlands.

Tropical insect communities are highly diverse but understudied, limiting understanding of tropical forest ecosystem functioning. This is especially true of the swamp forests of the central Congo peatlands, where peat occurs beneath two widespread forest types dominated by either hardwood trees or Raphia laurentii palms. Here, we describe taxonomic patterns in moth community composition, vertical stratification and seasonality in these two peat swamp forest types and the nearby terra firme forest. From 16 636 specimens, we identified 1110 species/morphospecies. Both swamp forest communities we

Response diversity increases functional but decreases compositional stability of grassland communities.

The insurance hypothesis of biodiversity assumes that biodiversity increases ecosystem stability when functionally redundant species exhibit distinct responses to environmental changes, allowing some species to compensate for the loss of others. However, empirical evidence remains scarce. Using a novel approach to quantify the responses of 96 plant species to land use, we tested the hypothesis combining field data with a common garden experiment. By subjecting transplanted grassland plant communities to different land-use intensities, we quantified response diversity (defined as the variabilit

Virome metatranscriptomic profiling of birch pollen reveals a diverse viral community.

INTRODUCTION: Viruses are increasingly recognized as integral components of plant-associated biological systems. However, their occurrence and diversity in the reproductive tissues of woody plants remain poorly understood. Birch (Betula spp.) produces large quantities of wind-dispersed pollen that can travel over long distances and may harbour viruses or virus-derived nucleic acids originating from the host plant and/or its associated microbiota. METHODS: We investigated the virome of birch pollen collected from trees growing in central and suburban Berlin, Germany. Metatranscriptomic analyse

An Investigation of a Community-Based Phase-I Online Group Trauma Intervention.

This study examined the feasibility of online group therapy for trauma survivors. Community-based participants (N = 178; 64% women; mean age = 43) self-referred for an eight-week psychoeducational, skills-based trauma therapy group, which was offered via secure video conferencing. Participants were diverse in terms of socio-economic status and ethnic identity. Participants completed the PCL-5 at registration (T0), pre-treatment (T1), and post-treatment (T2). T0-T1 reflected a waitlist period; T1-T2 represented the treatment phase. Mixed effects models showed significant overall PCL-5 reduction
