Chronic lower back pain effects of music on fluoroscopic guided (CLEF) interventional pain procedures: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Music medicine has shown promise in reducing anxiety and pain during medical procedures, but its effects during interventional pain procedures without sedation remain unexplored. Although previous studies have examined music medicine with procedural sedation, to our knowledge, no published research has yet explored music medicine during procedures without sedation in the chronic pain population, underscoring the novelty of our investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of music medicine on pain intensity, unpleasantness, and anxiety during lumbar medial branch blocks

Imagery rescripting for generalized anxiety disorder: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: This is the first clinical pilot to explore the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of imagery rescripting in individuals with a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: Participants with GAD (N = 18) attended assessment and 10 weekly sessions of imagery rescripting with a psychologist in person or via Telehealth. The protocol was based on Arntz's phased protocol and common rescripting procedures with adaptations to target the future orientation of worry. Measures of trait worry and GAD symptoms were administered pre-baseline (before a two-week b

Effect of spirulina platensis algae purified bioactive peptides on wound healing after periodontal flap surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

Spirulina platensis, a blue-green alga rich in nutritional value and the beneficial pigment phycocyanin, is a source of bioactive peptides with antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of bioactive peptides extracted from spirulina on wound healing and inflammation after periodontal surgery. In this double-blind, split-mouth randomized controlled trial study, twenty patients with periodontitis were assigned to either an experimental group (receiving spirulina peptide gel) or a control group (receiving placebo). Before surgery, all patients underwent scaling and root pla

Using real-world data to predict findings of an ongoing phase IV trial: glycemic control of semaglutide versus standard of care.

OBJECTIVE: Using national claims databases, we sought to emulate the design of the ongoing SEPRA trial and predict its findings, comparing the effects of once weekly semaglutide to SoC medications on glycemic control (A1C <7%) in type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using Optum Clinformatics (July 2017 - May 2022), we identified a 1:1 propensity score-matched (PSM) cohort of adults with T2D on metformin monotherapy, who had recorded A1C and initiated either injectable semaglutide or SoC medications (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhi

Effects of replacing meat and fish with pulse intake on circulating fibroblast growth factor-23 levels during a 12-week dietary weight-loss intervention using the Four-Food-Group Point Method: a pilot randomized controlled study.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a phosphaturic hormone secreted by the bone in response to dietary phosphate intake. High circulating FGF23 levels is an early sign of cardiovascular disease in individuals with obesity. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of replacing meat and fish with pulse intake on circulating FGF23 levels during a dietary weight-loss intervention. Sixteen middle-aged and older individuals with overweight and obesity (63.7 ± 5.1 years of age) were randomly assigned to control and plant groups. All participants attended a dietary weight-loss clas

Measles-mumps-rubella vaccination at 6 months of age and the risk of atopic disease in the first year of life: Results from a Danish placebo-controlled randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: In observational studies, childhood vaccinations have been associated with atopic diseases. However, results are conflicting and evidence from randomised trials is lacking. METHODS: Atopic disease after interventional measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine was a pre-planned secondary outcome of the MMR trial, a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 6540 Danish infants in the high-income setting of Denmark. At two hospitals, infants 5-7 months of age were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive an intramuscular injection with M-M-R VaxPro or placebo (solvent only). Randomisat

Real-Time Monitoring of Oxygen-Consumption Rate in Mouse Liver Slices Incubated in Organ-on-a-Chip Devices.

We developed an organ-on-a-chip (OOC) based on precision-cut liver slices to assess liver function in real-time, both in health and disease, in a controlled and noninvasive manner. We achieved this by integrating fiber-optic-based oxygen sensors before and after the microchamber in which a liver slice was incubated under flow, to measure oxygen concentrations in the medium in real time. We first demonstrated that the basal oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of liver slices is a reliable indicator of liver slice viability. By monitoring basal OCR (2.9-5.7 pmol O2/min/μg protein) in incubation medium

Inhibition of JAK-STAT pathway corrects salivary gland inflammation and interferon driven immune activation in Sjögren's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory cytokines that signal through the JAK- STAT pathway, especially interferons (IFNs), are implicated in Sjögren's Disease (SjD). Although inhibition of JAKs is effective in other autoimmune diseases, a systematic investigation of IFN-JAK-STAT signaling and effect of JAK inhibitor (JAKi) therapy in SjD-affected human tissues has not been reported. METHODS: Human minor salivary glands (MSGs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were investigated using bulk or single cell (sc) RNA sequencing (RNAseq), immunofluorescence microscopy (IF), and flow cytometry. Cost-Effectiveness of Sugammadex Versus Neostigmine to Reverse Neuromuscular Blockade in a University Hospital in Taiwan: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis.

Sugammadex has several pharmacological advantages over neostigmine, including faster reversal of neuromuscular blockade and fewer adverse effects. However, the economic impact of sugammadex remains controversial due to the considerable heterogeneity of study designs and clinical settings in previous studies. In a post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial, we evaluated patients who underwent elective surgeries and general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation in a medical center in Taiwan between March 2020 and August 2020. Patients were divided into either the sugammadex or neostigm

A multicomponent physical activity home-based intervention for fibromyalgia patients: effects on clinical and skin biopsy features.

OBJECTIVES: Adapted physical activity (APA) has been recommended for fibromyalgia (FM) treatment as an essential component of a biopsychosocial therapeutic approach for patients. Previous studies report that aerobic and resistance training are the most effective programs in improving the quality of life and psycho-physical well-being. Patients with FM are frequently affected by an impairment of small fibers innervation, which is evident in the proximal somatic districts. Therefore, this pilot randomised controlled not pharmacological trial aimed to investigate if a 12-week home-based multicomp

Continuous cardiac output measured with a Swan-Ganz catheter reacts too slowly in animal experiments with sudden circulatory failure.

BACKGROUND: In many animal experiments, it is vital to detect sudden changes in cardiac output (CO). This porcine study compared CO that was measured with a Swan-Ganz pulmonary catheter with the gold standard (which was a transit-time flow probe around the pulmonary artery) during interventions that caused hemodynamic instability. METHODS: In one series, 7 pigs were exposed to sudden changes in CO. In another series, 9 pigs experienced more prolonged changes in CO. All the pigs had a Swan-Ganz catheter placed into the pulmonary artery and a flow probe around the pulmonary artery. Adrenaline i

Effect of electro-acupuncture on ovarian function of women with diminished ovarian reserve: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) is the precursor state of ovarian failure and can cause the decline of women's reproductive function. DOR also leads to poor outcome of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) by affecting the oocytes, high qualified embryo rate, pregnancy rate, etc. Some studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can improve ovarian function. But to date, there is limited evidence indicating that acupuncture or electro-acupuncture is efficient to DOR. This trial aims to evaluate the efficiency and safety of electro-acupuncture for the ovarian function a

Importance of Hip-Spine Syndrome in Hip Arthroplasty: Influence on the Outcome and Therapeutic Consequences.

Correct interaction between the spine, pelvis, and hip is an essential condition for successful progress after total hip replacement. Spinal pathologies, such as degeneration, fractures, and spinopelvic imbalance with and without lumbar fusions, are closely associated with an increased risk of impingement or even dislocation of the prosthesis. To significantly reduce this risk, various parameters are required to quantify the risk groups. Knowledge on the presence of stiffness of the spine (change in pelvic tilt between standing and sitting at < 10°) and sagittal spinal deformity (pelvic incide
