Lack of cross-reactivity between rofecoxib and aspirin in aspirin-sensitive patients with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with aspirin-sensitive respiratory disease experience cross-reactions to all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes. With the introduction of antiarthritis drugs, which selectively inhibit cyclooxygenase-2, questions are raised as to whether cross-reactivity occurs between aspirin and these new cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether rofecoxib cross-reacts in aspirin-sensitive patients with asthma. METHODS: Sixty patients with asthma underwent doubleblinded, placebo-controlled oral challe

Rib Cross-Sectional Mineralized Area in Early Pleistocene Hominins: Insights From the Homo antecessor and H. erectus s. l. Fossil Record.

OBJECTIVES: Rib cross-sectional mineralized area provides valuable insights into mechanical loading and bone growth and remodeling. Given the scarcity of Early Pleistocene costal remains in the context of human evolution, we aimed to study the cross-sectional anatomy of fossil ribs from that period and compare them to a modern human ontogenetic series ranging from 8 to over 30 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We extracted the rib cross section at the midshaft of 6 fossil ribs attributed to several H. antecessor individuals and 10 fossil ribs of the H. erectus s. l. specimen KNM-WT 15000.

Scleral growth stunting via sub-Tenon injection of cross-linking solutions in live rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Scleral cross-linking is a potential method to inhibit axial elongation of the eye, preventing the progression of pathological myopia. Formaldehyde releasers, which are common preservatives found in cosmetics and ophthalmic solutions, have been shown to be not only effective in cross-linking corneal collagen in vitro and in vivo, but also have minimal toxicity effects on the eye. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of scleral cross-linking using sodium hydroxymethylglycinate (SMG) to inhibit eye growth using an in vivo rabbit model. METHODS: A cross-linking solution co

Local cross-border disease surveillance and control: experiences from the Mekong Basin.

BACKGROUND: The Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance cooperation (MBDS) is one of several sub-regional disease surveillance networks that have emerged in recent years as an approach to transnational cooperation for infectious disease prevention and control. Since 2003 MBDS has pioneered a unique model for local cross-border cooperation. This study examines stakeholders' perspectives of these MBDS experiences, based on a survey of local managers and semi-structured interviews with MBDS leaders and the central coordinator. RESULTS: Fifteen managers from 12 of 20 paired cross-border sites completed

Comparative bioequivalence study of different brands of acetyl salicylic acid in human volunteers.

A double blind cross over randomized study was conducted in 7 normal healthy volunteers. Single dose (700 mg) of buffered aspirin or aspirin with calcium carbonate or aspirin with caffeine was administered orally, at least 3 days apart. Blood samples were drawn at different time intervals after administration of drug for estimation of salicylate levels. The values of different pharmacokinetic parameters (AUC0-infinity, Cmax and tmax) did not show any significant difference, suggesting that these three brands of aspirin are biologically equivalent.

Ulnar nerve compression at the arch of origin of the adductor pollicis muscle.

The motor branch of the ulnar nerve can be compressed by the arch of origin of the adductor pollicis muscle. There can be a well-defined band of tissue either at the point where the nerve crosses the third metacarpal or where it penetrates the adductor muscle. In over half of the cadaver hands studied no arch was demonstrated. Clinically these patients present with obvious atrophy of the first dorsal interosseous and adductor muscle. Usually pain is not a prominent symptom. This type of ulnar nerve compression neuropathy is present in less than 1% of those ulnar neuropathies that occur at the

Effects of prazosin in men with symptoms of bladder neck obstruction and a non-hyperplastic prostate.

In a double blind cross-over study, the selective alpha 1-adrenoceptor blocker prazosin was given to eleven men with a non-hyperplastic prostate and with symptoms of bladder neck obstruction. During prazosin treatment maximum and average flow rates increased and residual urine was reduced. Prazosin did not change any pressure variables recorded. All patients had antegrade ejaculation and no side effects were reported. It is concluded that in selected patients with bladder outlet obstruction, prazosin may be a therapeutic alternative to bladder neck incision.

Experimental exposure to alcohol as a model for the evaluation of neurobehavioural tests.

The performance characteristics of 4 computerized psychological tests were studied using alcohol as a model compound. Subjects received alcohol (0.5 ml/kg) or placebo in a cross-over design and performance was assessed using the Simple Reaction Time test, the Switching Attention test, the Hand/Eye Coordination test and the Color-Word Vigilance test. Analyses indicated an overall significant effect of alcohol at blood-alcohol levels of 0.03% with response speed on the Color-Word Vigilance test being the most sensitive parameter.

Extension of the Gender Identity Scale for Males.

Our earlier Femine Gender Identity Scale for males appear to measure a strong single factor which was reliable and displayed substantial discriminant validity. However, the number of items was small and there was substantial overlap between items with respect to their meaning. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, in the present study the scale was extended and validated. Each item of the new scale differentiated among the groups in an experimental sample and, subsequently, in a cross-validation sample. A secondary finding was the significantly higher femine gender identity scores of ho

Probiotics for preventing urinary tract infection in people with neuropathic bladder.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic or neurogenic bladder describes a process of dysfunctional voiding as the result of injury in the brain, spinal cord or nerves innervating the bladder. People with neuropathic bladder, such as from spinal cord injury (SCI), are at significant risk of morbidity from urinary tract infections (UTI). Effective methods to prevent UTI in people with SCI have been sought for many years. Probiotics (micro-organisms that exert beneficial health effects in the host) have been recommended for bacterial interference of the urological tract to reduce colonisation by uropathogen and

The relation between physical activity and cardiac autonomic dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac autonomic dysfunction is common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although exercise training improves cardiac autonomic function, the effects of changing physical activity on cardiac autonomic function remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) investigate the association between cardiac autonomic function, exercise capacity and physical activity cross-sectionally and (2) relate changes in physical activity, as a result of a 6-month coaching program, to changes in cardiac autonomic function. METHODS: Autonomic function was assessed obj

TCS-Fall: Cross-individual fall detection system based on channel state information and time-continuous stack method.

BACKGROUND: Falls pose a serious health risk for the elderly, particular for those who are living alone. The utilization of WiFi-based fall detection, employing Channel State Information (CSI), emerges as a promising solution due to its non-intrusive nature and privacy preservation. Despite these advantages, the challenge lies in optimizing cross-individual performance for CSI-based methods. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a resilient real-time fall detection system across individuals utilizing CSI, named TCS-Fall. This method was designed to offer continuous monitoring of activities o

Experiences of Maternal Autonomy in Childbirth and Perinatal Care in the United States: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, major legal and policy shifts have reconfigured the reproductive health landscape in the United States (US), renewing interest in reproductive and bodily autonomy. While much of this attention has focused on abortion access, autonomy during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period remains underexamined. This review aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on experiences of maternal autonomy in childbirth and the factors that influence perinatal care decision-making. METHODS: We searched Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, JSTOR, and ClinicalTrials.gov f

Circulating immune cells in cerebral small vessel disease: a systematic review.

Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) refers to all pathologies of the brain's arterioles, capillaries, and venules. cSVD is highly prevalent with ageing and is diagnosed by its characteristic neuro-imaging features. Emerging evidence suggests that circulating immune cells play an important role in cSVD's pathology. However, the specific immune cell populations involved remain poorly understood. This systematic review synthesizes current evidence on circulating immune cells in cSVD and their associations with cSVD features. A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Scie

Complications of ventriculoperitoneal shunting: Is there further need of more evidence-based approach to care?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite extensive research on VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt-related problems leading to development of evidence-based recommendations, several published papers reporting complications (especially rare ones) still suggest disparities in management approach. The authors sought to broadly quantify the level of evidence on approach to care documented in the literature and to characterize these differences in the light of evidence-based practice. METHODS: A systematic review of the English literature was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines to evaluate the le
