Morpho-Syntactic Deficit in Children with Cochlear Implant: Consequence of Hearing Loss or Concomitant Impairment to the Language System?

BACKGROUND: Among implanted children with similar duration of auditory deprivation and clinical history, the morpho-syntactic skills remain highly variable, suggesting that other fundamental factors may determine the linguistic outcomes of these children, beyond their auditory recovery. The present study analyzed the morpho-syntactic discrepancies among three children with cochlear implant (CI), with the aim of understanding if morpho-syntactic deficits may be characterized as a domain-specific language disorder. METHOD: The three children (mean age = 7.2; SD = 0.4) received their CI at 2.7,

Correlates of Korean Hangul Reading in Children With Hearing Loss.

This study examined the associations of vocabulary and phonological and orthographic awareness with Hangul word reading in Korean children, aged between 7 and 10 years, who were deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and children with typical hearing (TH). The participants were 24 children with hearing aids (HAs), 24 children with cochlear implants (CIs), and 24 TH children in Korea. The three groups were matched for chronological age, vocabulary age, and nonverbal intelligence. Results showed that there were no differences between children with CIs and those with HAs in reading fluency and cognitive

On the Nature of Hearing Loss in Méniere's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To explain the pathophysiology of the hearing loss in Ménière's disease (MD). BACKGROUND: In a previous report, we described a dramatic recovery of hearing in 12/31 patients with MD using antiviral (AV) drugs. The hearing loss in the remaining 19 patients with a longer history of MD remained unchanged or else worsened. Vertigo control was complete in the group with improved hearing but poorer in the group with greater hearing loss (and a longer MD history). Since achieving the recovery of hearing and control of the vertigo using AV drugs in these patients with a shorter history (≤2

Light-Based Neuronal Activation: The Future of Cranial Nerve Stimulation.

Despite advances in implant hardware, neuroprosthetic devices in otolaryngology have sustained evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes over the past half century. Although electrical stimulation has the capacity for facile activation of neurons and high temporal resolution, it has limited spatial selectivity. Alternative strategies for neuronal stimulation are being investigated to improve spatial resolution. In particular, light-based neuronal stimulation is a viable alternative and complement to electrical stimulation. This article provides a broad overview of light-based neuronal sti

'I know his needs better than my own' - carers' support needs when caring for a person with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Caring for a person with dementia predisposes informal carers (carers) to mental and physical disability. Carers tend to focus on the needs of the person with dementia and have difficulties expressing their own needs for support. No instrument has yet been developed to directly assess carers' support needs. The aim of this study is to clarify the main categories of carers' support needs to inform future development of an instrument to assess carers' support needs. METHODS: A qualitative approach combining focus group interviews with carers and professionals and individual intervie

Novel Variants in Hearing Loss Genes and Associations With Audiometric Thresholds in a Multi-ethnic Cohort of US Patients With Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate novel variants in hearing loss genes and clinical factors affecting audiometric outcomes of cochlear implant (CI) patients. BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of hearing loss has a genetic etiology, with certain genetic variants more prevalent in specific ethnic groups. Different variants and some clinical variables including inner ear malformations result in different prognoses or clinical outcomes after CI. METHODS: Medical and genetic testing records of pediatric CI patients were reviewed for clinical variables. Minor allele frequencies of variants were obtained from

A comparison of the severity of tinnitus in patients with and without hearing loss using the tinnitus functional index (TFI).

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the severity of tinnitus in tinnitus patients with and without hearing loss. DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: 73 tinnitus patients were included in this study at an audiology clinic in Amman, Jordan. Participants were assigned to two groups according to their hearing status. The severity of tinnitus was evaluated using the Tinnitus Functional Index questionnaire. All participants were interviewed, followed by an otoscopic examination, pure tone audiometry, and tests for admittance and tinnitus matching. RESULTS: The normal hearing group included

Strategies for a regenerative therapy of hearing loss.

Despite impressive technical progress in the field of conventional hearing aids and implantable hearing systems, the hopes for the treatment of inner ear diseases such as hearing loss and tinnitus have become increasingly directed toward regenerative therapeutic approaches. This review discusses the currently most promising strategies for hair cell regeneration in the inner ear to treat hearing loss, including stem cell-based, gene transfer-based, and pharmacological interventions. Furthermore, previous milestones and ground-breaking work in this scientific field are identified. After many yea

[Cochlear implant in children].

Cochlear implant in children. In a newborn, sensitive auditory stimulations allow the progressive central auditory development. In a congenital severe or profound deaf child, a cochlear implantation can be considered if auditory thresholds are too low to provide an efficient auditory stimulation with hearing aids. This device includes an external processor, which receives and analyses surrounding sounds, and send them to the internal part surgically implanted. The electrode array placed in the cochlea stimulates auditory pathways. The implantation is performed in a multidisciplinary centre and

[Presbycusis - Age Related Hearing Loss].

Presbycusis or age related hearing loss can be defined as a progressive, bilateral and symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss due to age related degeneration of inner ear structures. It can be considered a multifactorial complex disorder with environmental and genetic factors. The molecular, electrophysiological and histological damage at different levels of the inner ear cause a progressive hearing loss, which usually affects the high frequencies of hearing. The resulting poor speech recognition has a negative impact on cognitive, emotional and social function in older adults. Recent investig

Mould constituents in the middle ear, a hearing-aid complication.

During the placement of a mould for a hearing-aid by a hearing-aid dispenser, moulding material entered the middle ear through pre-existent perforations in the tympanic membrane in both ears. Besides hearing loss, there were no other symptoms. Surgical removal of the moulding material by tympanotomy was necessary, and was complicated by encirclement of the ossicles by the material. All the material could be removed and the hearing was saved. Recommendations for an improved procedure of mould-making are made including more detailed information of the otoscopic findings at the prescriptions for

Multichannel auditory brain stem implant: case studies comparing fitting strategies and results.

A new 8-electrode prosthesis has been developed for individuals deafened by bilateral auditory nerve tumors (neurofibromatosis-2). Twelve patients have received the multichannel auditory brain stem implant at House Ear Institute since 1992, 11 of whom receive useful auditory sensations. Processor fitting includes scaling and ranking of electrode-specific pitch sensations, and determination of any nonauditory sensations. Two representative patients differing in experience and number of usable electrodes are compared in terms of range of auditory sensations and speech perception performance. An
