Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a common sleep disorder, negatively influencing individuals' quality of life and socioeconomic burden. In recent years, OSAHS has been reported in not only constituting an aging-associated disease, but also in accelerating and/or potentiating aging mechanisms. However, the negative impacts of OSAHS on aging are underestimated because of low level of public awareness about this disease and high rates of undiagnosed cases, which are more critical in developing countries or economically disadvantaged regions. Hence, reviewing previously reporte

Rapid differentiation of the AviPro Salmonella VAC T strain from wild-type Salmonella ser. Typhimurium isolates is essential for the monitoring of veterinary isolates and targeted control actions. The distinction between the two strain types is routinely made by phenotypic antimicrobial resistance testing, but this sometime leads to ambiguous results with major economic implications. In this study, we used whole-genome sequencing to identify conserved and specific mutations in resistance and virulence genes which enable to distinguish field and vaccine strains. Based on this information, we de

As we write, U.S. cities and states with extensive community transmission of Covid-19 are in harm's way-not only because of the disease itself but also because of prior and current failures to act. During the 2009 influenza pandemic, public health agencies and hospitals developed but never adequately implemented preparedness plans. Focused on efficiency in a competitive market, health systems had few incentives to maintain stockpiles of essential medical equipment. Just-in-time economic models resulted in storage of only those supplies needed then. At the same time, global purchasing in search

There are a number of physical restrictions that develop in the course of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). While loss of speech and motor control may be partially compensated by the support of assistive devices, swallowing difficulty and respiratory insufficiency require medical interventions (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, noninvasive, and invasive ventilation). Based on the data collected within the NEEDSinALS study, we found major differences in personal satisfaction with the financing, healthcare provision, medical infrastructure, and regulations of German and Polish ALS patients

Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) have superior physicochemical properties and great potential in biomedical applications. Eco-friendly and economic approaches for the synthesis of PtNPs have been developed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional physical and chemical methods. Various biogenic entities have been utilized in the green synthesis of PtNPs, including mainly plant extracts, algae, fungi bacteria, and their biomedical effects were assessed. Other biological derivatives have been used in the synthesis of PtNPs such as egg yolk, sheep milk, honey, and bovine serum albumin protein

Acute malnutrition is a nutritional deficiency resulting from either inadequate energy or protein intake. Children with primary acute malnutrition are common in developing countries as a result of inadequate food supply caused by social, economic, and environmental factors. Secondary acute malnutrition is usually due to an underlying disease causing abnormal nutrient loss, increased energy expenditure, or decreased food intake. Acute malnutrition leads to biochemical changes based on metabolic, hormonal, and glucoregulatory mechanisms. Most children with primary acute malnutrition can be manag

Outbreaks of hydropericardium syndrome and inclusion body hepatitis caused by fowl adenovirus (FAdV) have occurred in China since June 2015, resulting in significant economic loss to poultry industry. In this study, a novel FAdV, designated as AH720, with recombination among serotype FAdV-8a and FAdV-8b was isolated and characterized in China. Full genome analysis revealed that the AH720 has the genome backbone from FAdV-8b and the fibre gene from FAdV-8a. In an infection study, although AH720 was not lethal to chickens, AH720 did cause characteristic lesions of inclusion body hepatitis in the

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are very important diabetes-related lesions that can lead to serious physical consequences like amputations of limbs and equally severe social, psychological, and economic outcomes. It is reported that up to 25% of patients with diabetes develop a DFU in their lifetime, and more than half of them become infected. Therefore, it is essential to manage infection and ulcer recovery to prevent negatives outcomes. The available information plays a significant role in keeping both physicians and patients aware of the emerging therapies against DFUs. The purpose of this rev

Following Canada's largest polio epidemic in 1953, Station 67 at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) in Edmonton became home to patients who contracted the virus. As young as nine years old, some of these patients lived at the UAH for more than three decades. Akin to wartime services, the epidemic banded together families, patients, doctors, nurses, community members, and later respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists. The nature of the disease, the government response, and the social and economic climate dramatically affected the lived experiences of patients in Alberta's fight

Glaucoma suspects are controversial clinical dilemmas. These individuals harbor certain risk factors or demonstrate some clinical features suggestive of an increased probability to develop glaucomatous optic atrophy in the future. These characteristics range from high intraocular pressure; optic disc, visual field, or retinal nerve fiber layer abnormalities; or abnormal angles to a positive family history of glaucoma and other risk factors. Individuals having these characteristics should be assessed diligently before a diagnosis of glaucoma is made. Glaucoma is a chronic, lifelong condition, h

Osteochondral lesions are frequent and important causes of pain and disability. These lesions are induced by traumatic injuries or by diseases that affect both the cartilage surface and the subchondral bone. Due to the limited cartilage ability to regenerate and self-repair, these lesions tend to gradually worsen and progress towards osteoarthritis. The clinical, social, and economic impact of the osteochondral lesions is impressive and although therapeutic alternatives are under discussion, a consensus is not yet been achieved. Over the previous decade, new strategies based on innovative tiss

1. Infectious diseases have a large impact on poultry health and economics. Elucidating the pathogenesis of a certain disease is crucial to implement control strategies. 2. Multiplication of a pathogen and its characterisation in vitro are basic requirements to perform experimental studies. However, passaging of the pathogen in vitro can influence the pathogenicity, a process targeted for live vaccine development, but limits the reproduction of clinical signs. 3. Numerous factors can influence the outcome of experimental infections with some importance on the pathogen, application route and ho

Raising ostriches became an important economic activity after their products became commodities. The health of farm animals is of paramount importance, so assessing basic immunological responses is necessary to better understand health problems. We developed a method to obtain ostrich thrombocytes and macrophages. The thrombocytes died by apoptosis after 48 h in culture, and the macrophages expanded in size and increased the number of acidic compartments. Macrophages were activated by chicken interferon-γ, producing high levels of nitric oxide. Toxoplasma gondii was able to infect these macrop

Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) represents a major public health and medical challenge. The progressive nature of the disease, high morbidity, and increasing health-economic costs ensure that it remains at the forefront of novel research into mechanisms and potential therapies. These are largely divided into pharmacological (drugs) and electrical (ablation) with patients often going from former to latter. AF ablation has improved sufficiently to be offered as first line for paroxysmal AF, but whether drug therapy will or be relegated. In this review, we shall outline the progress in mechan

Norovirus (NoV) is now the dominant aetiological agent of acute gastroenteritis, and, with the recent introduction of rotavirus vaccines in many countries, this is likely to remain the case. NoV has a significant impact on human wellbeing in terms of morbidity, economic costs and mortality in developing countries. NoVs are divided into six genogroups (GI-GVI), but only GI, GII and GIV are known to infect humans, with GII being the most prevalent, causing >95% of human infections. The immune system is thought to drive selection of emerging pandemic NoVs through both antigenic drift and shift. T

AIM: Our aim is to summarize our experience in screening for cervical cancer using liquid-based cytology system and the Bethesda system.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We did a clinical study of 92 patients, aimed to summarize the results of liquid-based cytology based on various criteria such as specificity, sensitivity, positive and false negative results. All patients had conventional Pap smear as well.
RESULTS: The better results stand out of the LBC, mainly due to the reduced number of unsatisfactory results and higher specificity and sensitivity for low-grade lesions--LSIL. There is better stan

There is a commonly held perception that Helicobacter pylori related diseases are declining, however these are still associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. In recent years worrying themes have emerged such as increasing levels of antibiotic resistance and falling cure rates which illustrate there is no room for complacency with respect to H. pylori. In addition there are many significant issues which have not been elucidated regarding the role played by H. pylori in very serious pathologies such as gastric and esophageal cancer and other more benign disorders common in the dev

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a faeco-orally transmitted picornavirus and is one of the main causes of acute hepatitis worldwide. An overview of the molecular biology of HAV is presented with an emphasis on recent findings. Immune evasion strategies and a possible correlation between HAV and atopy are discussed as well. Despite the availability of efficient vaccines, antiviral drugs targeting HAV are required to treat severe cases of fulminant hepatitis, contain outbreaks, and halt the potential spread of vaccine-escape variants. Additionally, such drugs could be used to shorten the period of ill

Heart valve disease is a significant and increasing global problem of which, in the developing world, the primary sufferers are the children and young adults regarded as the critical 'Движок' of future economic growth. Yet, up to 10 times the current number of known sufferers remain undiagnosed in these countries. Among the most prevalent and neglected diseases are rheumatic heart disease and endomyocardial fibrosis. The etiologies of these diseases can be described in part as a dysregulation or reactivation of developmental biology pathways. Consequently, connecting mechanisms of valvulogenes
