OBJECTIVE: Adapt the 6 minutes walking test (6MWT) to artificial gait in complete spinal cord injured (SCI) patients aided by neuromuscular electrical stimulation.
METHOD: Nine male individuals with paraplegia (AIS A) participated in this study. Lesion levels varied between T4 and T12 and time post injured from 4 to 13 years. Patients performed 6MWT 1 and 6MWT 2. They used neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and were aided by a walker. The differences between two 6MWT were assessed by using a paired t test. Multiple r-squared was also calculated.
RESULTS: The 6MWT 1 and 6MWT 2 were not sta

The aim of this study was to classify antiarrhythmic drugs based on their effectiveness on 6 in vivo arrhythmia models, mainly using dogs. The models were produced by two-stage coronary ligation, digitalis, halothane-adrenaline, programmed electrical stimulation in old myocardial infarction dogs, coronary artery occlusion/reperfusion, or chronic atrioventricular block. Na(+)-channel-blocking drugs suppressed two-stage coronary ligation and digitalis arrhythmias. Ca(2+)-channel blockers and beta-blockers suppressed halothane-adrenaline arrhythmia. Positive inotropic drugs aggravated halothane-a

Three different types of isolated nerve-synapse preparations, guinea pig ileum, rat vas deferens and toad heart, were used to investigate the physiological activity of Huwentoxin-I, a neurotoxin from the venom of the spider Selenocosmia huwena. The twitch response of isolated guinea pig ileum induced by electrical stimulus can be inhibited by HWTX-I. After blockage, contraction of the ileum can be induced by exogenously applied acetylcholine. HWTX-I caused the inhibition of the twitch response to electrical nerve stimulation in the rat vas deferens. After the twitch was completely inhibited, n

Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to assess cochlear blood flow (CBF) in the hydropic ear in four experiments. 1) The increase in CBF elicited by local electrical stimulation of the cochlea in the hydropic ear was compared to that observed in normal controls. The magnitude of the evoked CBF change was reduced by approximately 30% in the hydropic ear compared to the normal ear. 2) The reduction in CBF evoked by direct electrical stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion was reduced by approximately one third in the hydropic ear compared to a normal ear. 3) Rhythmic (flux motion or vasomotion

After cervical spinal cord injuries, many patients are unable to sustain independent ventilation because of a disruption of diaphragm innervation and respiratory functioning. If phrenic nerve function is preserved, the patient may be able to tolerate exogenous pacing of the diaphragm via electrical stimulation. Previously this was accomplished by stimulation directly to the phrenic nerves, but may be accomplished less invasively by percutaneously stimulating the diaphragm itself. The benefits, when compared with mechanical ventilation, include a lower rate of pulmonary complications, improved

Electrical stimulation of the radial nerve associated with voluntary contraction of the shoulder girdle inhibited bioelectrical activity not only in the muscles of the hypothenar but also in the proximal muscles. In resting muscles, such stimulation elicited a reflex response with a large latent period. With weak voluntary tension stimulation elicited a reflex response while in the presence of considerable contraction the reflex response merged with bioelectrical activity, with a clearly demonstrable subsequent period of inhibition. The current viewpoint about the antidromal blockade of the se

Chronic recurrent thalamic stimulation has been effective in alleviating a variety of movement disorders. In contrast to thalamic lesions, it is preferred for the treatment of intractable motor disorders in low-risk elderly patients and patients with diffuse brain lesions secondary to trauma. Abnormal diencephalic electrical discharges have been observed and thought to be associated, in some way, with either generating or sustaining the movement abnormalities. The beneficial effects are ascribed to an electrophysiologic functional ablation of the discharging systems. This interpretation is bas

A patient with drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation associated with rapid ventricular rate underwent biatrial pacemaker implantation. During elective replacement of the pacemaker, a significant voltage- and frequency-dependent decrease in ventricular rate was achieved by high-frequency electrical stimulation (17 Hz) of parasympathetic cardiac nerves innervating the AV node with the implanted bipolar coronary sinus electrode. The negative dromotropic effect of parasympathetic stimulation was eliminated by intravenous administration of 1-mg atropine.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) triggers persistent neuroinflammation, gliosis, neuronal loss, and demyelination, leading to motor deficits and neuropathic pain (NeP). Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) has shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in acute SCI, but its potential in the chronic phase remains unclear. This study investigates whether combining BoNT/A with electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) enhances recovery in chronic SCI.
METHODS: Adult mice with severe thoracic SCI (paraplegic) underwent EMS (30 min/d for 10 non-consecutive days starting 3 d post-injury) or

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an overview of available electrical stimulation devices in neurogenic patients with lower urinary tract disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: It is advocated to do more studies in neurogenic patients as results seem promising and useful but most studies did not include neurogenic patients or neurogenic patients were not analyzed or reported separately. Most studies included a small heterogenous neurogenic group with multiple pathophysiologic origin focusing on effect of a treatment instead of results of a treatment in a specific neurogenic group. Neuromodulation or stimulati

BACKGROUND: Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) is a well established therapy for faecal incontinence (FI). Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is a newer, less invasive, treatment. The effectiveness and acceptability of these treatments have not been compared systematically.
METHODS: An investigator-blinded randomized pilot trial of PTNS versus SNS with a parallel qualitative study was performed. Quantitative clinical outcomes and qualitative data from patient interviews were collected for both interventions.
RESULTS: Forty patients (39 women; mean age 59 years) met the eligibility crit

Two patients aged 21 and 50 years presented with facial hemiatrophy and unilateral spasms of the masticatory muscles. Masticatory muscle biopsy showed normal findings in both patients and facial skin biopsy specimens only showed atrophy, although morphoea (localised facial scleroderma) had been diagnosed nine years previously in the second patient. The involuntary movements consisted of brief twitches and prolonged contractions clinically and electromyographically similar to those of hemifacial spasm and cramps. The jaw jerk and the silent periods were absent in the affected muscles. Direct st

OBJECTIVES: Sacral neuromodulation has become an established method to treat voiding dysfunction. Currently the use of implanted sacral nerve stimulators is becoming more popular worldwide. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important diagnostic tool for many medical and neurological disorders. Many radiology centers do not perform MRI examinations on patients with implanted sacral nerve stimulator. The basis for this policy is that potential hazards such as motion, dislocation or torquing of the implanted pulse generator (IPG), heating of the leads, and damage to the IPG may occur, result

Although it has been suggested that the ATP-sensitive K(+) (K(ATP)) channel protects muscle against function impairment, most studies have so far given little evidence for significant perturbation in the integrity and function of skeletal muscle fibers from inactive mice that lack K(ATP) channel activity in their cell membrane. The objective was, therefore, to test the hypothesis that K(ATP) channel-deficient skeletal muscle fibers become damaged when mice are subjected to stress. Wild-type and K(ATP) channel-deficient mice (Kir6.2(-/-) mice) were subjected to 4-5 wk of treadmill running at ei

INTRODUCTION: Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanisms of vulnerability and related failure of defibrillation therapy: the cross-field-induced critical point hypothesis and the virtual electrode-induced phase singularity hypothesis. These two hypotheses predict the opposite effect of preshock repolarization on the chirality (direction of rotation) of shock-induced reentry. The former suggests its reversal upon reversal of repolarization, whereas the latter suggests its preservation. The aim of this study was to determine, by reversing the repolarization sequence, which of th

1. This report summarizes studies of the changes in postsynaptic potentials that occur as pyramidal cells within the primary electrosensory processing nucleus learn to reject repetitive patterns of afferent input. The rejection mechanism employs "negative image inputs" that oppose or cancel electroreceptor afferent inputs or patterns of pyramidal hyperpolarization or depolarization caused by intracellular current injection. Feedback pathways carrying descending electrosensory as well as other types of information provide the negative image inputs. This study focuses on the role of a directly d

Peripheral nerve stimulation has been used in the treatment of several chronic pain conditions including pain due to peripheral nerve dysfunctions, complex regional pain syndrome, and cranial neuralgias. It has been shown to be effective for chronic, intractable pain that is refractory to conventional therapies such as physical therapy, medications, transcutaneous electrical stimulations, and nerve blocks. Recently, a new generation of peripheral nerve stimulation devices has been developed; these allow external pulse generators to transmit impulses wirelessly to the implanted electrode, and t

After spinal cord injury, electrical stimulation of the roots inside the spinal column at the level of the cauda equina is a safe and effective way to regain some degree of control over lower body function, e.g. bladder and bowel management and leg movement. The success of current systems used for so-called intrathecal stimulation is limited by the low number of stimulation channels, which are in consequence of the maximum acceptable number of transdural cables. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed an active electrode with integrated electronics, providing four individual stimula

In acute experiments on anesthetized cats, the central stumps of nerve branches innervating different parts of the stomach were electrically stimulated. Impulses from sympathetic efferents of the left major splanchnic nerve and the smooth muscle potentials from the gastric pylorus were recorded. The prevalence of sympathoinhibitory effects was shown during stimulation of the gastric branch of the dorsal trunk and pyloric branch of the ventral trunk of vagus subphrenic branches. Weak stimulatory effects were observed during stimulation of the same nerves after cervical vagotomy. The sympatho-in
